Plex Just Ruined Their Roku App

Agreed! The new app sucks. Aside from the clumsy new UI, the app itself is so buggy that even the arrow keys quit working. Reboot and retry? Are you kidding? This Roku app version is a train wreck in a dumpster fire. We even popped $100 to upgrade from the 2022 Roku Ultra 4802X to the 2024 Roku Ultra 4850X after reading that “older Roku’s” may have issues with the latest Plex app for Roku. Nope! Same glitching controls. The Roku’ both work fine with Netflix, Paramount+ and other services. It’s ONLY the Plex for Roku APP that just became junk. I can run Plex on my PC, or my Android phone, or even the web app in the browser on my Raspberry Pi. Heads up Roku! Get the Plex app rolled back or I might just refund the Roku and hook my Raspberry Pi to the TV to use Plex via the web app. Too bad the Roku Ultra’s don’t have any web browser. This latest Plex app fiasco is giving Roku a black eye.

Yeah, like we wanna do that (someone suggested uninstalling and reinstalling the Plex app) 10 times a day. We bought a brand new Roku Ultra 4850X today and already had the Plex app lose functionality a half dozen times. Not any of the OTHER streaming services, ONLY the Plex app for Roku. If it were a car, we’d be getting out to push it every other block.

I bet their “uninstall-reinstall” post was entered less than an hour before their app glitched out again.

I had the same issue. I unsinstalled Plex and then reinstall the app. The arrows were working again. But I still hate the new interface. I hope they will put an option to return to the old interface.

This “Update” is a disaster, and I’ve already started to move over to JellyFin. But for those still dealing with alot of the UI lockups and crashes.

I noticed that my Roku was spamming the living heck out of my PI-Hole AD blocker when the Plex app was opened. When I disable the PI-Hole or bypass it the UI no longer freezes or gets stuck moving between the UI elements.

My guess is they are tracking every move you make in the UI, and they are not gracefully handling errors when those tracking and AD services are not accessible. Hence the pausing and crashing when moving around the UI.

Ah Emby installed running and on Roku. So much less aggravation.

As a 10 year Plex Pass subscriber, I’m finally done. Such a terrible Roku update with and unintuitive UI and incredibly buggy. I’ve already been getting grief from my family over the iOS Plex changes and the forced use of Plexamp for music and audiobooks. Now they’ve ruined our TV. I’m still evaluating alternatives, but I know that Plex is no longer an option in our household.

Has anyone reached out to Roku about this Plex app mess? I have, and I’m curious—what do you think they’d do if they saw how many users are struggling with compatibility issues between Roku devices and one of the top media streaming apps? I’ve heard from folks saying they’re ready to ditch their Rokus after the frustrating Plex experience, and if enough people share those stories directly with Roku, maybe it’ll prompt some real dialogue between the teams. What’s your take?

Why oh why would ANYONE think it was a good idea to remove the user friendly home screen side navigation bar which required ONLY ONE click to access. The reasoning for this change is incomprehensible. Do you not understand the term user friendly? I’m seriously considering switching to Jellyfin but the time to customize my entire library isn’t appealing. This update is really making the argument for the time commitment. I have already installed Jellyfin, and started with the library setup.

I did. They just refer you here.

yea, Jellyfin dev has really ticked up recently. heck, i found someone who made a jellyfin client for my Playstation Vita!! dude!! the VITA!!! yea, if we could get the remote access setup easier and the client side setup as easy as plex; most of us would just ship in an instant.

Did Plex hire some ex-employee from Cracker place? I thought the Roku app was safe, but BAM! now almost worthless. Time to start looking at Kodi and Jellyfin again!

At the very least they could provide an option to the old view!!

I want MY sidebar back! I wany MY home back! What a cluster ***k! I’ve not looked on a client side yet, but I can imagine the omg experiance. This is NOT what i paid for. Really only one button in settings now to customize what I paid for….default library view —> set to browse. But that does not change the fact they have broken the whole roku app.

Access to all my playlists in one area is now totally gone. Actually everything i PAID for is totally gone. Guess I will try jellyfin now after years and years with plex.

I would like to thank plex devs and decision makers for being self serving ****.

completely agree! My aging parents now are having a very difficult time navigating plex after almost a decade of using it…its a shame that Plex has pushed this inferior and complicated UI to its users. Please give us the option to revert to the older UI!

Found the menu to be able to favorite libraries thanks to others in the forum, which at least brought back recommended pages on libraries. This is not ideal folks.. If I want to watch something that isn’t in the recommended space it’s really difficult to get to.

Image you had an old TV with a power button, a channel changer and some controls to makes adjustments. One morning you wake up and find all the controls rearranged and functioning differently, and all the channel numbers had changed. It certainly hasn’t become simpler and more intuitive, which should always be the primary focus of design and functionality changes. Fundamentally changing the interface in this way is very user-hostile.

It feels like a money grab to court you into watching their own programming or rentals by making your own harder to find. It is absolutely terrible and I do hope they realize this and simply revert to previous versions.

And to make it worse, roku will not “unsee” my old server I have not used for years and it has chosen THAT server and libraries to be the defaults, so I can’t actually put ANY of my favorites on the horizontal bar at all. I have tried for 3 days deleting, rebooting, every trick google and reddit advise. None worked. I have been a member since 2014, but I am just about done now. This is beyond maddening

The previous version I could scan libraries from the Roku Plex app but now in the new version I cannot find that option and have to do it from the browser app. Did they really remove that??

UPDATE: just saw in another post that you have to select the asterisk button on the remote after selecting which library from the libraries main menu….did not realize that the asterisk button had a function on these menus.
