Plex Library Not Updating

Server Version#: Version 1.14.0.5470
Player Version#:?

Apologies if this sounds ignorant but I am not au fait with computer language!

In a nutshell, I have my Plex Media Server on my Lenovo laptop which then links to my media files which are stored on a WD Cloud box. I am a Plex Pass User and have not had any issues for over 3 years now. I added approx 17 movie files (all named correctly) on Friday and for some reason the Library is not updating / picking up the Recently Added Movies.
I have tried to manually ‘Scan Library Files’ many times with no joy. Have also restarted WD Box and signed in and out of PMS but still nothing.
I did update to PMS Version 1.14.0.5470 yesterday but the issue was happening before this without any updates.
I can’t seem to find a forum post which relates exactly to my set-up / issue.
Any help very gratefully received!

Edit your library
go to the ‘Add Folders’ tab
look at the drive and folder paths listed in there.

Make sure that every path listed in there:

  • is still existent
  • is not a completely empty folder or drive
  • is valid
  • the Windows user account under which you are running Plex server has access permissions to it

Check for changed drive letters and folder names.

Are your movie file names conforming to this:

Thanks so much for this. I’ve checked all of your suggestions but am unsure what to do re the Windows User Account access permissions. I haven’t changed anything (in Plex or Windows) so not sure it would be this but also not sure what it means? Many thanks.

Sometimes, Windows is changing drive letters for external drives if you unplug and then re-plug them in a different order.
You probably don’t even notice this because you only look out for the name of the volume in the file explorer.
That’s why you have to compare the drive letters Plex is expecting to see with those that are actually present.

Windows user account access permissions are usually only important if you are running Plex server as a ‘system service’ or if you are using a file server or a NAS device for your media files.

All of my media files are stored on the same drive (Z) and I have deleted any references to old drive letters which was caused by the problem you describe above. There is no problem with updating (scanning) TV or Music files but it is just ‘stuck’ on Movies.

What kind of drive is Z:?

WD Cloud box

So it is a networked file share.
After you reboot the Windows computer, do you have to input a user name and password to access the files on the WD cloud?

I assume you can access those files just fine with the Windows file explorer?

Yes I do have to input user name and password to access the WD Cloud. It pops up in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and tells me how much space is left on the drive (currently 22%).
I can access all of the files no problem with Windows File Explorer.

Could you tell me the complete path and file name of one of those affected movies?

Peters My Cloud Home (Z:)Movies\Rider on the Rain (1970).avi

Are all of your movies in AVI format?
Do they play in a desktop video player, e.g. https://mpc-hc.org/ ?
(I like to use this one and not VLC due to the similarity between Plex’s video transcoder and MPC-HC’s decoder.)

A mixture of AVI and MKV in this instance.
I have just tried with MPC-HC and they play fine.

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 2 minutes
  6. perform the Plex Dance with one(!) of the affected movies
  7. wait 3 minutes
  8. fetch log files and attach them here

How do I

?
Is that the same as just signing out?

He is referring to shutting down or exiting the Plex Media Server program. Right click on the tray icon for Plex and choose Exit. Wait a couple of minutes and then you can then restart the Plex Media Server program by clicking it in your Start menu.

Thanks both.

I followed all of the steps (Plex Dance etc) but on both occasions that I scanned libraries it just hung and I had to ‘cancel scan’. FYI it hung for over 6 hours!
Likewise, when I go to ‘Troubleshooting’ to download logs and save the Zip File it simply sits in downloads saying 'Unknown time left 0 bytes/0 bytes/sec)

I tried adding a TV episode and scanning the TV Library and it took a while but DID update.

Just to clarify here, the Movies Library is still not updating and just hangs when I scan library files.

The download logs simply sit in downloads saying 'Unknown time left 0 bytes/0 bytes/sec).

I have located the logs manually though. Could it be ‘Plex Media Scanner.log’ located in Appdata/Local/Plex Media server/ Logs?

48 hrs without any Library updates now and it’s driving me insane!

You should start in the Plex Media Server.log
Look for the time stamps at the beginning on the lines and compare them with the time when you started the library update.
If there are fundamental errors, they will show up here already.

Then continue to the Plex Media Scanner.log file(s). They will list all folders and will also tell if PMS is considering the files as new or not.
It will also show if there are issues with access permissions.

Plex Media Server.zip (58.3 KB)

I’m attaching (I think!) the latest Plex Media server.log as a ZIP.

The time stamps seem to be fine but the actual scan in PMS is still running (and likely will without stopping).

There seem to be lots of ‘errors’ towards the bottom of the log but they don’t mean anything to me.

Any ideas?

Thanks again.
