I have gone through about 30 uninstalls/installs on my DS918+ with DSM 7 and seem to have PMS working however I cannot add my library of media from my NAS. It seems to recognize that the folder is there but does not scan anything.
What am I missing/not doing? anybody know?
When you map the folders as I show in the How-To , and use the UID/GID for your system, in HOST network mode (not bridge), it does work.
You must have the permissions set correctly in DSM before creating the container else it’s a moot exercise.
Did you go to each of your shared folders and give System Internal User
PlexMediaServer
permission to read them?
This is a manually required step (Plex has no privileges unless you grant them) on Synology NAS systems.
I just followed the instructions to update Plex for DSM7. There are two problems I still have.
-
Plex can not recognize my server. This is on PC in chrome.
2)When I am on android on the app I can click on these libraries anyway. I see all my files are there, I can navigate to specific episodes and even hear the theme music playing. But when I press play I get the error "There was an error navigating to the specified item. Please make sure you are connected to the internet and try again.
Please advise on how to solve these issues. I have the same problems on my Nvidia shield (tube) which makes me suspect that is is on the server side, but I’m not very knowledgeable on this topic.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks for your help Chuck. Much more progress this time, however it’s now jumping to “Manually Stopped” after a longer period of time (up to around 30mins). Logs attached again. The issue is much less obvious to me this time. Is it possible that this backup also has issues and I need to go back in time further?
In case it’s helpful - on the previous advice I was unable to assign PlexMediaServer to be the owner of the DB. DSM7 only allowed me to change the owner to a local user or group, not a system internal user. Easy workaround was just to rename the original rather than duplicate file to keep the original owner, but thought it would be helpful for you to know.Plex Media Server.log (6.2 MB)
Decided to ditch the Linux server image for now and stick to the official Plex image which is working perfectly. Will wait to see if anyone else has success with the Linux server image first.
Thanks for your help ChuckPA, that seems to have worked. I did that process early in my attempts but missed the step this time. Much appreciated.
Hi all,
been trying to find a solution to my problem but the topic is huge.
So far, no big pb for me
- forgot to read plex migration warning - oops, was on vacaction
- updated to dsm 7 when back from vacation
- updated plex via “manual install” in package center
- had to set up permissions to my shared folders
Everything is working fine, including meta agent, apart from “plex” shared folder : it’s now empty.
I read that you can “revive” your plex shared folder. Is it still possible for me at that stage ?
I just need to have it to update my metadata agents.
Thanks everyone and apologies If I missed something.
“Plex” shared folder isn’t used anymore – That’s in this document which details everything.
I’m perplexed. I JUST did the DSM update last night not fully realizing what I was getting into and now I find myself having to try and download a new plex version from plex rather than the beta provided by Synology. My question is this, what package do I choose for my DS1621+ with a AMD Ryzen x64 while all of the plex packages are for two Intel and three ARM versions only.
Have you tried Intel x64 (Should use the the same x86-64 instruction set) ? Don’t think there is an AMD version.
how to fix this
Not authorized why?!
I just bought the new DS1821+ and installed the system DSM7.0 directly, but I can’t use PLEX. I’m going crazy.

is work thanks so much i verry thanks you
This has bothered me for days and I can’t find a way
intel 64 build worked just fine. followed the instructions and everything seems to have installed correctly. Thanks a lot for your responses.
You effect a transfer by emulating the old structure and making it ‘migrate’.
Prepare
- On old NAS, turn off all library automatic updating & empty trash
The move
- Create shared folder
Plex
- Create subfolders
Library/Application Support
- Transfer
Plex Media Server
from other NAS to this NAS (Plex/Library/Application Support) - Remove
Preferences.xml
when transfer complete if you want to create a new identity - FileStation - “Plex” shared folder - Properties - Permissions
a. Give SystemInternalUser PlexMediaServer Administrative, Read, Write permissions (Full Control)
b. Be certain to "Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files
c. Allow that task to run (it can take a while depending on how much)
The import
- Uninstall the DSM 7 application – DELETE option
- Install the DSM 7 app (download from Plex.tv for the latest)
- It will automatically invoke a “Migration”
- Follow the instructions given in the popups if they appear
- Let it run to completion (even if DSM 7 acts weird) – it will not “Hang”
Cleanup
- Plex / Migration.log will track the progress
- The Plex shared folder will again be empty when migration is complete with exception of Migration.log
- You’re again free to delete the “Plex” shared folder.
Thank you sir! Appreciate all the hard work you put into the guide and making this as easy as possible. It only took me about 30 minutes altogether. That included a dunce moment when my media was “unavailable” because I didn’t share the media folder with the new Plex user. Maybe I missed that step?
At any rate…overall 9 out of 10 for the guide and seamlessness of the upgrade. I was really nervous about it.
You missed the step ( the steps it tells you when you install the package… that blue one. It’s right there. )
10 out of 10
Glad you’re up and running.
It takes anywhere from 5-60 minutes for most users. For those with extreme libraries, the process can take 2 weeks of the NAS running constantly!
Thank you Chuck,
I tried that before but it did not work however, I found the mistake between the keyboard and the chair I forgot that Linux is case sensitive and needs share “Plex” with capital “P” and not “plex”. So now migration is complete however, the Posters did not show up for ~95% of my items so I had to select all and Refresh Metadata as an additional step.
On another note, is there a way to setup filter on movies where Country is blank?
Thank you
If images aren’t showing, there is a permissions problem.
We can fix that if you want.
it involves taking you to the new packaging structure (which will be public use in a few days)
That new structure allow us easy access to fix everything from the GUI.
Interested ?
PS: When it comes to setting up filters, I’m not really the person to ask but can get someone who does know more. I work 99% of the time down at the OS layer and making PMS, whatever it does internally, work. I am “the guy with the glue”
