I upgraded to DSM 7 based on the instructions here. I then installed PMS 1.24.2.5000, added all the permissions per the instructions. While it was installing it stopped and said install failed (sorry no screenshots). The screen stayed on the Install screen and if I tried to click OK again, it would tell me an install was already occurring. After awhile, it popped up another Install Failed message.
My ‘Plex’ folder only has the migration log in it, and it says everything completed just fine. It’s a little suspicious though because I have several libraries including fairly large Movie and Music ones, and it completed rather quickly.
My ‘PlexMediaServer’ AppData folder has the ‘Plex Media Server’ folder, and it’s 2.2mb. There is also a ‘.deleting_1510’ folder that has a ‘Plex Media Server’ folder in it that is 47.7gb.
Launching my Plex app seems to log in fine, but the various libraries say they can’t be found.
.deleting_xxxxx is only created to support the ERASE uninstall option. When Uninstall + ERASE is chosen, I move the existing Plex Media Server directory into a temporary .deleting directory. A background deletion process is then launched to remove it. This is done to allow you to immediately reinstall in a fresh environment.
What you might be seeing in the apps is purely residual from before you did the Uninstall w/Erase action.
At this point, you will need to build a new fresh server instance on the Synology.
I am curious why you’re poking around in the shell. .deleting is not visible from File Station.
1-2: I did an ERASE after I had the “Install Failed” message. At the time, my “Plex” folder seemed to have all of the data still there (i.e. it was not just the migration.log). When that completed and installed, that’s probably the results of the migration.log I sent.
3: Can I salvage any of the information that’s in the ‘.deleting_1510’ folder? I’ll admit it doesn’t look fully complete of my old Plex folder, but it’s still 47gb of something.
4: I don’t know how to answer that one - I’m too technology knowledge limited. It’s just showing up in my PlexMediaServer/AppData folder in File Station. I don’t know of any special setting I would have turned on to see it.
@trumpy, welp, it looks like my work laptop has some funky network issues. I was able to successfully re-install DSM 7x, from another laptop, and Plex is in process now… Thanks for the help. Hopefully I’ll have no other issues and Plex will be up and running shortly. @ChuckPa
UPDATE: Plex installed no problem. Thanks for all your help.
I don’t understand why lost my plex server when i installed 1.24.2.4973 my synology is a 418 play
i have all permission set for plexmediaserver all my metadata are in the plexmediaserver my old plex folder just have the migration log files inside. When i update from 1.24.1.4931 to 1.24.2.4973 plex ask me to claim my synology server but not the right one with all my medata, preference etc.
he want claim a new one and my server with all my metadata that work with 1.24.1.4931 is not available.
Here’s a screenshot of what I’m seeing on my FileStation in terms of the folders I mentioned. I have not yet tried to Uninstall PMS x5000 and install the latest, but I will shortly.
This was excellent advice.
This is exactly what fixed my Plex issues.
I am one of those that stupidly upgraded DSM 6 to DSM 7 without looking into any possible issues first.
Obviously my Plex went haywire instantly and I was struggling to find a fix to this problem.
Updating each of the permissions enabled Plex to see my server, but each time I tried to play a video, it came up with an error box saying that there was no connection or that the file did not exist “Please check and Retry”.
Today I was on my last ditch efforts to try and find a solution. Hey Presto! ChuckPa’s solution above sorted it with ease. I added PlexMediaServer to each of my media folders and sure enough my plex was finally able to see and play my media files.
Thank you so much for your constant efforts ChuckPa.
I was almost at the end of my tether and thinking of just buying a new NAS drive.
Sorry I think I got lost in our conversation. Are you saying I may not see a difference in the PMS instances? I was hoping I’d see my libraries show up, but I’m feeling they’re lost (at least collections, posters and other meta-data), or at the very least partially available in the ‘.delete_1501’ folder.
Do you think I still am just not connecting right to the ‘PlexMediaServer’ and my data is actually there (not thinking so with it only being 2.2mb). Could I try deleting the information in the ‘PlexMediaServer’ folder and copying the ‘deleting_1510/PlexMediaServer’ into the ‘PlexMediaServer’ folder (see my screenshot up above a few posts)? And if that doesn’t work, just start over and build new libraries?
Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. Kicking myself for not doing a backup right before I started all of this.
Throwing this in the thread as I guess a new thread isn’t kosher:
Server Version#: 1.24.2.4973-7000
Synology DS418
Upgraded to DSM 7 and migrated. Looks like I’ve lost everything in terms of what was in Plex/Library/Application Support. No way of knowing if it truly migrated to the new system, and I’m pretty crushed about this. No loss of media, but the entire metadata library is seemingly lost and…all that time invested…just lost.
Now every time I try to run it, it is then Manually Stopped. Every time. Is there any fix or way to stabilize this? I never told it completely install from scratch.
Your libraries were intact until you opted to delete (which is NOT recoverable – as it states)
The worst which could have happened is needing to reclaim it. Automated reclaiming is provided in the installer itself. (Plex Claim Token install option).
Lessons learned but it really is best to stop and ask before taking action. We’re here and would rather answer the question , no matter how dumb it might seem to you, than you lose your data.
Moving forward: CLEAN START
stop Plex if it’s installed
Uninstall + ERASE option. CONFIRM it in the last page
Search for and REMOVE any references to the Synology server so that Plex.tv is ready too.
Now install fresh,
a. Choose the Plex Claim Token method
b. Get the token from Plex.tv
c. Copy from the browser
d. Paste back into the installer window
e. NEXT through until it starts installing
f. It needs about 30 extra seconds to talk to Plex.tv and pre-claim the server for you.
g. When completed , it will confirm it’s claimed to your Plex username.
Now start Plex (if it didn’t autostart)
Give it a moment to startup
Close any open Plex/web browser tabs
Open a fresh one to http://ip.address.ofyour.Synology:32400/web (fill in the IP address of your machine on the LAN)
For reasons I do not understand, there are some cases where server info is copied (which takes a long time) instead of the instantaneous “move” operation I wrote it as.
I would appreciate any information anyone has.
The script performs a ‘move’ operation (a rename) to place the hidden server info into the new “PlexMediaServer” shared folder which exists on the same volume.
I do not understand why, for some, that becomes a COPY operation. I’ve not yet determined the pattern.
If anyone can look at
Where PMS (the package) is installed (Package Center)
Where the PlexMediaServer shared folder gets created (Control panel)
