New to the forum and don’t know exactly where to start this topic. If already addressed, please direct me to the appropriate area. Thanks.
I had a problem accessing my plex files on my synology NAS and was directed by synology to delete and reinstall the most recent plex media server. After doing so, I had no media files identified in file server. The HDD still shows the same amount of used space, but no folders are found. I was advised to ask this question here. Synology suggested that there have been other similar questions of seemingly lost data. Is this a known issue? Thank you so much for your assistance in retrieving my files!
Please forgive me, – Synology is clueless right now. They only see the Beta package (what is in package center). Most of their tech support staff do not know about all the changes needed to make Plex work in DSM 7.
Which version of PMS do you have installed?
Whatever you do, Do not start deleting anything until we know what we have .
Quick question: is it safe to upgrade the media server through the Plex app yet (it’s showing there’s an update available) or should we still hold off on that for now?
Yeah that’s how I’ve been installing the updates, even back on DSM 6 (downloading the package and manually installing through package center). What I mean is if you’re in the Plex app on a computer and it shows in the top right corner that there is a server update available and I go download it through the Plex app itself, this version is safe to manually install through package center, correct? I’ve already done all of the DSM 7 migration stuff and I assume I won’t have to do any of that again for each update?
@ChuckPa
Thank you sooo much!
At first some movies didn’t show up so I forced the “refresh all metadata” command with my current X-Token and now it’s all working again.
Hi there, sorry if this is not the right thread for this, but I have a simple question and don’t want to make a whole new topic.
In the migration instructions thread, you mentioned that:
This version of Plex Media Server does not support Hardware HDR processing. All processing is performed in software in conjunction with HW transcoding This does exact a performance penalty. Please be mindful until HW HDR processing is available natively.
Despite searching around, I could not figure out exactly what you mean by this. Does this mean that the performance on DSM 7 (native) would be worse than on DSM 6 (native) for the same transcoding task? Or are you referring to DSM in general not having native support for the hardware HDR processing as opposed to another platform or running on docker?
There is no HDR → SDR tone mapping support in the NAS boxes (native) packages right now. ( We’re waiting on Engimeering to give us the modules we need )
If you need HEVC HDR → H264 SDR, you are better off overlaying the docker package on top of your existing DSM 7 data. Doing this will allow you to come back to the native package when they finally do give us what we need.
Ok, I’ll try to make this as clear as I can. I had a drive error a few weeks ago. I did a repair and following that, could not access my then visible media files. Contacted Synolgy and was asked to delete and reinstall the latest version of PMS. Following that, my media files are not visible in file station. The storage space hasn’t changed with the same 3.8 TB of data stored (of course I can’t see it!) Where’s Waldo?
Hi Chuck,
Embarrassingly, I have attempted to migrate my PLEX install from my DS916+ to my new DS1520+. The instructions seemed clear enough…at first. I should also say that:
a) my technical competence is limited
b) I am running DSM V. 7.0-41890 on both systems
c) On the DS1520+, I have tried to load both the Synology PLEX Beta and the one from the PLEX site (with and without token)
d) my technical competence is limited…
I started to get a sinking feeling when I couldn’t find the /PLEXMEDIASERVER/APPDATA file on the source NAS (DS916+). That problem cleared up when the latest PLEX update came in and allowed us to view and copy that file structure and files. Thus, I copied them and then placed them in the associated location in the new NAS (DS1520+).
When I logged in, 2 things occurred:
I couldn’t locate the server with the new PLEX install (only the Beta worked from Synology) - the token and non-token downloads couldn’t find the server
When I was able to get into PLEX, none of my metadata was appearing.
I have a feeling I might have picked the absolute worst time to migrate to a new NAS while Synology was upgrading from DSM 6.0 to 7.0. That will teach me to go the forums first…
Any assistance would be awesome (and hopefully prevent me from having to update the metadata for 1200 movies, 75 TV series and 30,000 songs and associated Playlists…)
It sounds like you didn’t “Come to the Forums” and read my documentation ?
or (for the new packaging)
That having been said, as long as you don’t ERASE anything during uninstall, we can get you there.
Here’s how we do this on DSM 7 target (regardless whether coming from DSM 6 or 7)
On the target system
Create shared folder “Plex”
Create sub folders Plex/Library/Application Support.
Copy the Plex Media Server folder, and all below it, and place it under Application Support
This gives us the old DSM 6 structure (Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server)
Once setup this way, We can then let the existing installation package handle all the tasks of setting up and importing your data onto the NAS.
Please advise how you wish to proceed.
PS:
Package Center is no longer compatible. Don’t use it
PMS 1.24.2.4973 and above are where you need to be.
a. New structure
b. Where it will be from this point forward (contains all I tried to get in the initial)
Sorry to bother you with this but I really need your help, even if I have to pay for your time, I’ll try to be as clear and detailed as possible (English is not my first language).
I did follow your guide step by step for the update and migration process from DSM 6 to DSM 7 Plex Media Server. But my Media didn’t migrate, I did followed other recommendations that you wrote for others in the forum, none of them worked for me.
I wouldn’t be taking your time if this problem were not that big for me, at the moment, my Plex Media is 15.94 TB, with almost each video with some customization. Therefore the process of re-building my libraries from scratch would take me week if not months. Plus the time it would take to my NAS to regenerate the Previews from each file and the Header detection process for the TV Shows.
This are the generals of the process.
Synology NAS 1520+ from DSM 6.2.4-25556 to DSM 7.0.1-42214
Plex version DSM 6 was 1.34.1.2601-ff212e16
Plex version installed on DSM 7 is 1.24.2.4973-2b1b51db9
This is what I did.
Update to DSM 7
Re-start the NAS after update completed.
Uninstalled previous Plex App.
Started the Installation process DSM 7 Plex App.
Gave permissions to the PlexMediaServer user (Full Admin permissions on the Plex shared folder), when the message appeared during the installation.
The permissions granting took several minutes (I think due to the number of files)
Then clicked OK an the process ended immediately, not letting me to click on the Done button as the process completed and all the windows disappeared. Therefore, the message that Plex Media Server DSM 6 upgraded to 7 did not showed up.
The media is inside the Plex shared folder.
I appended Plex and took me to the setup of a new Server, I did set the same name as I had before but it was empty and the previous server appeared as unreachable.
I did repeated the process several times choosing both options (uninstall only and Sign Out and unclaim this server).
When reinstalling, I did try the claiming suggestion that you mentioned and it claims the empty server that was created in step 9 of this list.
12 I removed both servers from the account expecting to be able to recover the original. But no luck.
Is there any way to fix this? Can I just manually move the media from Plex to Plex Media Server and replace the content of the AppData/Plex Media Server folder?
Thank you for the time and effort you’ve put into all this. I upgraded to dsm 7.0 and then pressed repair on plex. about 30 seconds later I found your posts and pressed cancel on the repair. I then followed the steps to install manually, including the special permissions for the PlexMediaServer user, and the read write access to the folders. When I cleared the pop-up, I didn’t need to wait any length of time at all, it just looked like it had finished.
I went to open plex and it seemed to open but with the yellow wheel circling for a while. I left it alone and came back to be asked to add a library, so I pointed it to my media folder on the same volume as the plex folder. When I go into the application, it tells me unable to reach the server and I see yellow warning stickers down the left hand side on all my old library folders. It will access my ‘new’ media folder on a duplicate server of the same name as the old one. Should I just unlink all my old folders and remap them, and do you think it has migrated successfully? If you need anything else to help you confirm, I’d be most grateful if you could advise. Best wishes and thanks again for your insight.
@ChuckPa My native language is Spanish but I can understand/read English with no problem.
I mentioned that it is not my first language to let you know that my grammar or some words may sound weird or not appropriate (I know that some don’t like that).
Thank you very much for your quick reply and support.
