William,
Thank you for your response.
I missed the Synology DSM 7 in the Downloads dropdown list.

Hi there, I’m in the middle of migrating my Plex server from my DS1513+ to my new DS1520+ and i was curious what you would recommend for strategy. Right now they are both running DSM 6 with the 1513+ running the latest Plex Server and the 1520+ with no plex installed yet.

Should i:

  1. Upgrade both DS1513+ and 1520+ to DSM 7 → Migrate Plex database from 1513+ to 1520+

or

  1. Migrate Plex database from 1513+ to 1520+ on DSM 6 → Upgrade to DSM 7 on 1520+

Curious as i don’t see any DSM 7 specific instructions on how to migrate the database to a new unit.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Will

I use the method you outlined to upload the latest versions. Have been for some time but today I got this.

Did reboot of my Synology NAS DSM 918+ but the same issue.
Anyone else have this issue?

ok I tried a different process. I went to the plex download page, pulled the new version. Instead of putting it on my desktop I let Chrome put it in the downloads folder and I pulled it from there. Works fine now.

With all due respect, but it’s so frustrating when you have a media database with thousands of updated covers and after months of preparing, PSM couldn’t find a better solution for DSM7?
I’ve read hours on Google, made all the things with the permissions, even for every folder on my DS218+, running DSM 7.0-41890, and also a dozens of uninstall (uninstall mode) and reinstall and it still doesn’t show my media content.
I’ve now uninstalled with the ā€œerase all methodā€, because after a week of messing around I’m frustrated and already thinking about getting rid of my NAS and PSM.

Update: Now I have added a new mediathek and now it works, but all the covers and settings are gone. Surprise! I’ve made a backup of my ā€œLibraryā€, but do I need to copy it to the same directory in ā€œPlexMediaServerā€? Because there is no Library folder in the new ā€œPlexMediaServerā€ folder.

Thanks for the reply, but I’ve already read and tried that messed up and tedious instructions a few times and it didn’t work.
Thank god that I didn’t buy the Plex Pass.

And even if it would have worked out and if I’m not wrong, PSM still doesn’t have a solution for future backups/restores of the Library and the PSM extras and troubles in DSM7?

Thanks for the fast reply. I’m sorry for my rude tone, but I’m already going nuts.
I guess the other 90%, who have still troubles, didn’t find it worthy registering/loging in and asking here.

I have already erased everything on PSM, but I still have an old backup of the PSM6 library zipped. I guess, after I have installed PSM7 with new settings, it’s not possible to restore the old library?

Thank you anyway for your support, even if I don’t deserve it. My PSM is rekt.

that made my day. thank you

I’ve a DS218+, running DSM 7.0-41890 and PSM 1.24.3.5033 after I have failed to migrate the old PMS6 database library with 2.000 holiday movies, all with custom covers and renamed meticulous, I have just erased the old ā€žPlexā€œ folder, the ā€žPlexMediaServerā€œ folder and I did a complete fresh install. I have uninstalled Plex with the erase method (I was just going nuts) and I have manuelly reinstalled it again and just re-added the media libraries. As expected, all covers and titles are now gone and I wanted to ask, if it’s maybe possible to migrate the old library database (with the covers and titels) again?

Thank you very much.

So I’ve went through and followed the instructions best i could but when i open plex it just gives me the ā€œHow plex worksā€ welcome screen. I never saw any message about folder migration or anything.

Abbreviated steps i followed from your post:

  1. Uninstalled PMS
  2. Upgraded to DSM 7
  3. Restarted twice
  4. Installed PMS (No error messages or anything)
  5. Realized i should have done the permissions first and went back and did all the permissions
  6. Uninstalled PMS using Uninstall only option
  7. Installed PMS
  8. Plex web screen just shows ā€œHow plex worksā€ screen
  9. Uninstall PMS using the and unclaim server option
  10. Install plex using token
  11. Get message Plex server successfully claimed
  12. On plex web i still just see ā€œHow plex worksā€

What did i do wrong?

Thanks for the help! I can see your fielding a lot of questions.

Will

I had the same behaviour as @schwillyd530. I followed the instructions but got presented with a brand new server instance.
I was able to fix the issue but I am not sure if this will fix everything permanently since I did not use the ā€œUninstall and eraseā€ option. Here is what I did:

  1. Stopped the server
  2. Deleted everything in /volume1/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server manually
  3. Uninstalled Plex using the ā€œUninstall onlyā€ option.
  4. Copied over everything in /volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server to /volume1/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server
  5. Reinstalled Plex for DSM7

This way all my data finally showed up again and everything seems fine. I’m just a bit worried that this will have unintended side effects. Will I be fine? And can I delete the old Plex Shared Folder now?

So i tried again, this time i got a Installation Failed message but it did not complete the step if you get me.
Like normally when something fails, you just hit ok and you’re back to where you started.
This time it brought me back to the Install prompts for the PMS package so i just hit ā€œbackā€ until the first prompt and then hit the ā€œXā€ to close out the window.

Now the weird part though is now in the Synology Package center i see this:

What should i do?

Thanks @trumpy81

I uninstalled Plex again with the ā€œeraseā€ option and started the installation again. This time I got the notification about the migration process and everything got moved to the new folder and Plex seems to be working again.

Sorry, i saw your shut it down message before the ā€œleave it aloneā€ one.
Anyway it’s all working now. Thanks so much for the help.

Just FYI what i did:

  1. Shut it down.
  2. On restart i now had the option now to ā€œUninstallā€ PMS and did so
  3. Triple checked all permissions
  4. Installed PMS using token option
  5. Migration took about an hour. Then got server successfully claimed by ā€œā€"" with nothing in the quotes for some reason.
  6. When i opened PMS it had caution symbol on all folders, but everything was there. I just had to go to settings and ā€œclaimā€ the server. After that it’s all perfect!

Will now attempt moving everything over to my DS1520+

Thanks again for being so responsive!

I am unable to access my media on my NAS. I have a Synology DS218+. I use a MacBook Pro for computer. A couple of days ago I noticed a system message from Synology asking me to upgrade the DiskStation software to DSM 7. I naively upgraded it and no problem…I thought. Later I tried to access a show on Plex and was unable to do so. I went in to the DiskStation software and saw it wanted me to repair Plex so I followed the directions and repaired it. Then I downloaded a newer version and installed that. Then it said there was a newer version available so I installed that. I finally landed on Version 1.24.3.5033. I tried to load up a program and it still wouldn’t run. Looked on YouTube and I saw all the problems. I followed the instruction on one of the videos and then I tried to load a show and it still wouldn’t. I watched several other videos and they all explained the same process. I went back and made the same changed again and it didn’t work then either. I don’t know if I’m looking for help properly on this long thread or if I’m supposed to start a new one. Apologies if I’m doing this wrong. I feel like I’ve hit a brick wall because I don’t have the experience a lot of people have with Plex.

I did some screen shots but I don’t know how to insert them into my post. Thanks for any help you can be and accept my apologies if I’m looking for help in the wrong post.

I can’t get to my media using the Plex media browser. It won’t let me get to my sub folders where the media is at. I can only get to one folder beyond /Volume 1/

@ChuckPa hello again! PMS started crashing again. I installed a new router a few days ago, maybe I screwed up some network settings?

Thank you for taking the time to troubleshoot.

I think I followed your instructions and it still says unavailable to my media. This is what my tree structure looks like on my Synology.

No, I hadn’t. I did now after you advised me though. I can’t thank you enough! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don’t have many movies - 157, but I have a lot of work into them. When you get as old as me, time is precious! I hope to gain half the knowledge you have of Plex someday. I hope to watch all the content I have before I’m called home. Again, trumpy81, much thanks.

@photogman551

A suggestion for future consideration.

Since ā€œHomesā€ service can be turned on & off, it’s generally easier and a bit safer to put your media up at the top-most level in a proper shared folder.

It saves the crazy silly administrative things like this if DSM changes something in the next updates.

I was wondering about that. Could it be done now or would that be a big hassle? After moving it, reassign where to find media through the media browser?

Thanks for pointing that out to me. Thinking back it seems like Synology just put the Plex media in the Homes directory/folder.
