Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

@thorbot

Thank you for taking the initiative and getting out the :hammer:

@bkays

Now i understand your problem. I’ve seen this before in older DSM installations.
This is easy to resolve but takes some time.

  1. Rename the “Plex” share to “Plex-old” ( Control Panel - Shared Folders )

  2. Create a new “Plex” shared folder. While there , add System Internal User PlexMediaServer

  3. Now, here’s what can take time, move Library from Plex-old to Plex

  4. When this is done, you’ll have a new “Plex” shared folder with a “Custom” button that we need AND your metadata will be in the right spot.

@GVautier

You forgot to give “PlexMediaServer” permission to see your media shared folders :wink:

Thanks I’ll give it a go!

Euh no…

is this the Synology “video” shared folder ?

If so, then we need change that… OR… “Convert to Windows ACL” and then add again.

This is the pain of DSM 7. I am sorry about it but this is their new design.

Thank you very much for your help Chuck, i followed all your steps and it works so far, but i have still a little problem, before on DSM 6 my Plex Media Server was on Volume 2, now i installed your Plex Server Version on Volume 1, so far anything if working and on Plex it is addint my Movies and Music, but i would like to use the old Media Files from the Folder, i would like to copy it over like i did that once in the past, but my problem is…i see only the old Plex Media Server…in my new createt Folder where i installed PMS there is no Plex Media Server Folder, do you know what this can be ?

Hey chuck, thanks for helping out in here.

I upgraded to DSM 7 tonight and all seems OK with the exception of remote access - this seems to be “red” now.

Have had a rock-solid remote connection since getting the Synology a year ago, so hoping this is an easy fix?

Thank you Trumpy81 i will try this

Thanks trumpy, will try this.

Is this something that is now required after the dsm 7 update? As I’ve never had an issue with this before!

THANK YOU! I missed that message or thought I had done that, but went back and did it for probably more places than needed but the new stuff finally showed up Thank you ChuckPa!

Chuck, your are the King, i followed exactly what you said and after Trumpy81 mentioned to change to my old Volume, deinstall Plex and install your 1.24 to the Plex Volume which i had from DSM6 the Magic starts, the installation needed over one hour, first i thought something went wrong but then i saw that there was in the folder a Migration.log and into it i saw that it does some process. After it was finished i started Plex and …WOW !!
Anything was like before !

Thank you for your efford and all the time you spend here for us, well done !!!

And only then i will do it, thank you trumpy for beeing here aswell

I got the long installation message this time so thought I was good but it seems like it just timed out I got an error message. Still shows as installing in Package Center now though? It took about an hour or so before I got the error message.

Edit - looking at Migration log does this mean its still working correctly?
Edit 2 - answered my own question by looking at the migration log. It’s still working!! :slight_smile:

If I may point out for anyone else who comes along —

Near the bottom (sorry), there is a note about the migration log.

what should we do if i accidentally created a new server after the upgrade. i tried the claim method but it still showing only the new server with no library. as i cannot connect to the old and correct server

@robbyong

Please explain further.

When you install the DSM 7 app after upgrading , migration begins immediately.

Now, if you installed from the Package Center OR “Upgraded” your existing PMS , you can get caught.

Please detail what happened so we can help you recover.

after upgrading my synology to DSM 7. it asks me to repair plex. so i followed the instructions on how to repair it. i fix the permission of the shared folder. then after upgrading the PMS installation was successful. when i opened the app its a new installation and asking me to create a server name. now i have 2 servers. the old server and new server. but the old server is unreachable. i just can seem to remember if it migrated properly.

is there still a chance that i can migrate?

Ah! Now i see what happened.

That was a mistake.

The procedures, which I have had documented now for quite some time, tell you to UNINSTALL the package before upgrading DSM 7.

If you do, all this can be avoided.

We can pretty easily recover from this.

First, i would like you to confirm,

  1. Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server exists
  2. In that folder, confirm your “Preferences.xml” (server identity) is still sitting there.

yes. Preferences.xml is still there
