Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

Recently installed the latest packaging 2.0 build - all went smoothly. I then wanted to create a plex docker container using @ChuckPa 's guide and Linuxserver.io’s docker container. (DSM 7 + Packaging 2.0 + Docker -- The How-To). All went smoothly; however, it seems to start up as a brand new server rather than interoperating with the existing packaging 2.0 server. I’ve been through everything a number of times but can’t figure out what I’ve done wrong. Any ideas?

Upgrade went smooth. All my metadata appears in the PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server folder. Only took about 5 minutes to set up permissions and move about 80 GBs over.

@ozzymo

You migrated from DSM 6 ?

No, I was already on the DSM 7 .4881 build. I just used your test file here to move all the metadata over to a visible folder so I can back it up with Hyper Backup.

Ah. OK.

What I do here is I pull from @apphome directly on the same volume.

Permissions of the PlexMediaServer shared folder are automatic.

If you pulled from something non-internal, and it found it, then moved in that time?

SWEET!

That is better than what I was hoping for regarding the flexibility.

Yea it was set up in the default @apphome directory. It told me I needed to give the internal system user Custom permissions on the new PlexMediaServer shared directory. I did that and then it proceeded to take about 5 minutes to move everything to the new directory.

Hello, thank you for your work on this. I am on a DS920+ with DSM7 and had the latest beta build of PMS. I downloaded the preview build, stopped PMS, and installed the preview build. It ran for about two minutes, gave me the notification about permissions, and then I closed it out and restarted PMS. The PlexMediaServer (30 GB) shared folder was created and data was transferred. All permissions were intact. I restarted DSM 7 for good measure. I then opened the local Plex web browser and tested video/music from all shared folders with media. I also ran a backup task in Hyperbackup. Everything seems to be functioning as planned! Again, thank you very much.

ALL,

When you see the popup about permissions during upgrade, Please screenshot this IFF it is not the Blue one so I can recreate and suppress the warning. It should not appear unjustly.

DSM 7 → DSM 7 is a relocation and not a migration. There are two different paths in the scripting logic

EDIT

Corrected: Asking for ACLs on Plex share when re-installing package on DSM 7.

Just wanted to chime in that I installed and everything worked just fine. There was a few minutes of the update spinner going, and then it finished out. I am coming from an existing DSM7 Plex install, for what it is worth. My Hyper Backup task already had the new share selected, so I didn’t even have to do anything to start backing up the data. Thanks for figuring out these changes! Nice to have Plex backing up again.

I’m glad it’s working for you again.

I’ve wanted to do this since the beginning.
I could never get DSM to allow me to keep the Plex shared folder.

The first step, which was the most difficult, was “migration” (updating all the files and permissions to the new username).

Once that was done and stable, which it appears to be, I set out to complete the last stage.

That’s how we got here.

This will, hopefully, be a short duration preview.

One quick question about the “update spinner”. Did you need to interact with it (change any permissions) ? You shouldn’t have needed to.

Hello All:

A few days ago I updated my DSM 6 to DSM 7 and did the Plex migration with instructions provided by ChuckPa and all went as smooth as silk. My only concern was this issue of not being able to backup the Plex configuration.

So after finding this Forum Item I downloaded the relevant Review Package and installed. Everything went beautifully and was completed in less than 2 minutes (22GB data).

Hyperbackup is busily backing up the new PlexMediaServer share as we speak (this is taking a lot longer than the Review Package did! ).

I didn’t have to interact with the installer at all once I’d confirmed to go ahead. All Permissions were set automatically.

So a huge shoutout to ChuckPa for such a swift and excellent solution to this problem, your work and dedication is mightily appreciated and I hope they are paying you the big bucks!

Thanks again.

ALL:

Minor update (cosmetic) made to the package.

New SPK files placed.

The Plex migration from DSM 7 to DSM 7 has also worked for me without any problems, thanks for your great work!

Migrated from standard DSM 7 to this version without a problem. Thanks

How does it look ?

Does the PlexMediaServer shared folder (only visible to Administrators) and AppData seem clearly delineated ?

I think I’m going to need assistance with the prior instructions for the PSM migration. Rather than make a major mistake going it alone, who do I contact to walk me through this migration? DSM 7 appears to be perfectly stable after the update from DSM 6. Where do I start?

If I may make this a little easier and augment FordGuy ?

  1. Uninstall the DSM 6 Plex app before you upgrade to DSM 7 – keeps things clean
  2. Don’t remove the Plex user or Plex share. We need those
  3. After DSM 7 is upgraded, come back here and get the binary for your machine
  4. Now the screenshots in the Migration Instructions will show you what to do next.

Thank you. I got to the end of Stage 1 and tested and PMS (PlexMediaServer-1.23.6.4881) is up and running normally. I’ll continue to review it but it looks like that was exactly what the doctor ordered.

@smharder

Did you install from the plex.tv/downloads site or from here in the Forum Preview?

If from here,

  1. you can’t go back to the main downloads . incompatible
  2. I will make packages as needed but wont’ need much / long delay
  3. do you now have a “PlexMediaServer” shared folder ?
