I used the plex.tv/downloads site for the source. I do not have a PlexMediaServer shared folder. I checked that and was surprised it was still working off the old directory structure.
So you’re saying I should get any future updates to PSM from the plex.tv/downloads location?
That’s totally fine!
The hard part is over.
At this point, totally at your option, you can scroll up and grab the SPK which I created (google drive link) for your machine and perform a Manual Install.
There will be no warnings or complaints. It will do the last step (what I’ve wanted since the beginning) without issue.
It should be almost instantaneous.
The plex.tv/downloads packages don’t have the shared folder in them.
My packages here (Forum Preview) do.
All these changes are already in QA review and should be approved quickly
The only caveat to installing from me here is you’ll need to wait until I update the SPK - OR - my package is approved (both will occur about the same time)
You’re always welcome to call out and ask.
Thanks ChuckPa - you are our HERO !
Upgraded DS1815+ and DS1819+ without any issues.
It took about 20 minutes to update DS1815+ and 14 minutes on DS1819+
I have a large libs - the PlexMediaServer is about 500Gb.
Thanks again.
What about future updates of the PSM - will these be distinguished some how from regular updates?
The changes I’ve introduced here are going to be part of the normal distribution for Plex on Synology.
I’m only doing this to serve as one last test before giving to everyone worldwide.
If there were any problems, I can easily fix them here at this level.
The next step is these changes go into the master production for everyone.
With my package installed; What you should now find is:
- PlexMediaServer - Shared Folder – Dedicated use for only Plex’s metadata
- An “AppData” folder inside it – where PMS actually is stored.
- several warning files to not put media here (because it won’t work) – that’s what the old “Plex” shared folder is for.
What you do gain here:
- Ability to make backup & restore jobs with HyperBackup – easily.
- Grab logs directly if PMS doesn’t start. (no need to do redirecdtion)
- You still can use the features I put in the installer GUI – they help a lot in those cases.
If Engineering makes a major update to PMS before my package is released to the public, – then i will release one for us here.
We are outside the normal update process right now. I’ll do my best to keep us in sync.
Please be certain to read the limitations and warnings I wrote above.
PMS on DSM 7 is very fragile right now and might be for a long time.
It doesn’t have the ability to correct itself like it used to (DSM 7 changed that)
To all following here:
-
Discovered an edge case where postuninstall may not work right for everyone. Fixed it.
-
While updating, upgraded to PMS 1.24.0 (today’s package)
Enjoy
Sorry if this is an obvious question or repeat, but just want to make sure I have digested all the information on the forums here correctly. I’ve been following these threads for a few months to see how things shake out.
It seems that this version in this thread is a different setup/configuration than what is called out in the ‘official’ DSM7 Migration thread, right?
And this ‘Forum Preview’ version sounds like it will imminently become the ‘official’ version?
Thus, as I’m currently on DSM 6, should I wait a few more days/weeks before upgrading to DSM 7? The solution in this thread seems like it might be best option for the migration?
Just updated to from 1.23 to 1.24 on a DS216Play running DSM 7. Everything went smoothly, no permission changes required. And now Hyperbackup is busy backing up all the library files.
Ok since no one else is asking… I have a DS920Plus what version do I download?
The one with -x86_64. You can tell by downloading any one of the packages at Download Center - DS920+ | Synology Incorporated and seeing how it is named.
Synology DS920+ x64 (Celeron J4125) 2.0 Ghz
OK - got all that except one part seems unclear on these forums.
Uninstall Plex while still on DSM6 and THEN upgrade to DSM7 and then follow the steps on these forums?
Followed your advice and uninstalled the package, then upgraded to DSM7 and followed the rest of the directions and all seems fine. One thing that was a little confusing on the directions…
When I got the Phase 1 first time failure, I left that window open and then configured all the permissions and went back to that window and clicked Done expecting it to kick me out and then I would have to uninstall the package and reinstall it again as per the steps @ChuckPa laid out in his post. HOWEVER, as soon as I clicked done it carried on with the installation and did so successfully.
Everything else seems ok, but, if I had to tweak the directions on permissions for Library shares because I don’t like Plex to have the ability to delete content EXCEPT for my directories I use for DVR recording LiveTV. So just a caveat to any other users to remember to have a good hard think about how you manage permissions with Plex + Synology.
same thing happened to me. I forgot to uninstall on DSM 6, upgraded to 7, installed the new package, got the error, fixed permissions, clicked done and it finished installing just fine. Then upgraded from that to the new folder structure without problems.
If I use this preview to install a fresh PMS, will I be able to update it to the final release once this package leaves preview stage?
So there is no plan for there to be a migration process of some sort? It will be as simple as installing the latest version when the time comes?
Chuck, thank you so much for this. Worked like a charm. I want to rebuild my NAS (for reasons unrelated to Plex) and was looking for a good way to do a backup, so now that I can use HyperBackup things will be so much easier…
We all owe you a beer or two.
I’m glad I kept at it.
I might take some time off until the
can come off.
This is as close to DSM 6 as I can get it.
You deserve the time off.
Question (apologies if answered already) - can I download and install the current beta release from plex.tv over the top of the package you’ve supplied, now that I have it installed? Or will the beta version from Plex destroy the file structure you’ve created with this package?
No.
My Forum Preview package, just like our initial DSM 7 Beta, is OUTSIDE the normal release cycle.
I will manually build new packages if needed but if you load existing production on top of my new Packaging 2.0, it will break everything.
Current production packaging does not know how to deal with the changes I’ve made so it will think it has a new machine and create a new , empty, server instance.
