My file scheme can be see in the picture below. For years plex has never had an issue. This started happening about a month or so I tried updating plex to a new version and nothing has worked.
Have tried changing library advanced settings to both “Plex TV Series” and “Plex Series Scanner” as well as changing to every other “Agent Setting”
To be clear none of the files are even showing up in plex.
I don’t keep everything dumped into this folder. This is my temporary pre-sort folder called “New to watch”. Most of the time it only has Colberts since it’s my only daily show. I have a script my friend wrote before he passed that I use often that renames and moves movies and shows to the correct folder.
I figured out a work around to this. Instead of having it as a TV in the library settings I set it to “other videos” it doesn’t group them like having them as a TV did but since I only have a few files at a time in the temp folder its fine. I delete everything except movies (that I will use his script on) from this folder after watching so it wont be hard to find the new Colbert.
I did try what you said (quite the pain in the butt) but it didn’t work. While my work around is great for me this is still poor for other users. Plex should really figure out how to sort as a TV library for Colbert or make a new Library called “daily” for things like news and late shows.
I quote… “This is only an example. The most important bit in the file name is the appropriate season and episode number notation s02e17 which in this example means Season 2 Episode 17 It does not matter if you use dashes, dots or just spaces”
For the late show if I saved them after watching instead of erasing them it would be “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Exx Sxx.” Which, I did try that naming scheme under a Plex “TV” library, AND a “Movie” library as well; it never found added any of my files. The “movie” library i made does however think every episode I had was “Stephen Colbert’s Election Night 2020” episode. lol
I prefer to have my TV shows auto DL from usenet with no commercials instead of using my DVR to record my shows on TV and then having to skip through. It also allows me to watch my show when I am at work without my cable box. This is the file naming system that is used on Usenet.
Plex won’t find metadata if you’re mixing things up.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is a tv show, so you’ll only find metadata for it if you add it to a tv-show library and organize the files in a way your Plex Media Server can recognize. Plex depends on those structures to (a) identify the season/episode structure of a show and (b) match it so it can find metadata.
If you dump the episodes in a flat folder, Plex won’t be able to get you any metadata.
That is not true at all because that folder has before had a bunch of different ■■■■ in it after I went on vacation, and when I got back I had probably 6 different shows and several movies, everything was sorted fine. This is the only issue I have ever had with sorting. Also even when the folder only contains The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it still does not work.
The only files kept in this folder is usually episodes of “the late show with stephen colbert”
Occasionally other tv shows or movies get downloaded into that folder, but as soon as i get home I sort them to their proper folder elsewhere using a script.
The problem still occurs when the late show is the only show in the folder though.
I do not sort colbert because i dont save colbert, just watch nightly, and then immediately delete it.
I might be having the same problem. Plex stopped matching date based episodes for this show last week. It has happened to me before for this same show.
The series appears to be matched correctly and I see the episode metadata in the tvdb but Plex isn’t getting it.
Server Version 1.25.3.5409 (Windows)
My agent and scanner are both set to Plex Tv Series for this library.
I can confirm I’m having the same issue starting last week for the same show. I’m using the TRaSH Sonarr guide for renaming that is optimal for Plex and still having issues.
/data/TV-Shows/HD-TV-Shows/The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (2015) [tvdb-289574]/Season 07/The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (2015) - 2022-01-20 - Dionne Warwick David Cross [HDTV-1080p][AAC 2.0][x265].mkv
I’m looking forward to a fix, as the missing metadata is breaking the way Plex will play back the files (e.g. if I have saved progress on something with metadata, it will go to the first item even without metadata and ignore that progressed file)
Using Plex TV Series Scanner & Agent, running Server version 1.25.4.5426 (Synology).
For whatever reason the usenet scene naming scheme for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” is just “Stephen.Colbert” with the date and guest like files in the pictures shown in the original post. If you guys could, it would be awesome if you could make plex notice the usenet naming scheme as well.
