Plex Not Playing Some 4K videos

Hi,

Plex is unable to play some 4k movies.

Here’s my NUC’s spec:
NUC IVM8VHB|
Processor|Intel(R) Core™ i7-8559U CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.71 GHz
Installed RAM|16.0 GB (15.9 GB usable)
System type|64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Movies plex can’t play:
4K DoVi/HDR10 (HEVC Main 10)

Movies plex can play:
4K HDR10 (HEVC Main 10) playable

It seems plex can’t play movies with the DoVi feature. Is it because my Nuc isn’t powerful enough? If not, is there a solution for this?

Are you using your NUC as a server or a player?

If it’s a server, what player are you using?

If you are using it as a player, what OS and playback client are you using?

I do not believe an Intel NUC can play DV. But this depends on your setup as asked by Scott-M.

I have a Synology NAS connected to the NUC and the Plex Media Server is installed on it… So I am assuming the NUC is both the server and the player?

To confirm, you have your NUC connected to your TV to watch content?

You can use your computer as both a server and a player, I am just trying to understand your full setup.

I have a 2021 LG OLED TV as well. Could this be why plex can’t play DV or DoVi 4k movies as well?

Yes I have my NUC and AppleTV connected to the TV to watch content. Oh I think I know what you mean by player. I use the AppleTV as my player to watch the movies.

Which one are you using to browse/stream Plex?

I use my 4K AppleTV to watch/stream my movies on Plex.

I just checked both my 4k AppleTV and LG OLED TV supports dolby vision.

Well yes, but also no… Dolby Vision is an ambiguous standard and has many different versions.

I have gotten DV to work on the AppleTV 4k, but let’s first gather some information.

Can you reproduce the issue and post logs here?

Additionally you can quickly tell if the playback is being transcoded by looking at the dashboard

The reason I ask is that you didn’t provide requested logs. You now have other playback issues.
