Plex not seeing folders on new Volume & new expansion unit

Server Version#: DS920+ with DX517-1 expansion
Player Version#: 1.27.2.5929-7000
Working on Mac with Monterey

I looked around and can’t seem to find any answers.

I have been using PLEX on my Synology DS920+ without any problems, but I ran out of space. I recently got a DX517-1 to expand it. I created a new Storage Pool and Volume on the DX517-1, and a new shared folder. I have have tried giving Plex read/write as well as Full Permissions.

When I go to add a new library or redirect an existing library, Plex is seeing the new “volume2,” but it is not seeing the folders inside of it. Like I said, I double checked permissions.

I am a novice at this kind of stuff. What am I missing?

  1. Do I need to create a new shared “PlexMediaServer” folder in addition to the other shared folder I created on the new volume?
  2. Does the new & existing shared folder that I already created on the new volume need a “Library” folder? I see that the original Plex shared folder on the original volume has one. If the new volume needs one also, how do I make one?
  3. Is there as setting in the Plex that I am missing?
  4. Did I just waste thousands of dollars, because Plex can’t use expansion units?

I asked Synology and they said I should ask Plex, but Plex doesn’t seem to have a support number…just this forum.

Any guidance will be much appreciated. Thanks

That sounds very much like a permission issue.
Make sure the system user running your Plex Media Server on the Syno has access to the volumes on the expansion unit.

You don’t need to create a separate server data directory or library folder. This is not about settings inside Plex.

To add to what Tom said,

After you created the new storage pool, your next step was to create Volume 2.
Once Volume 2 is created, you can then create new shared folders on Volume 2.

In Control Panel - Shared Folder is where you grant permission to PMS to read those new shared folder(s).

Thanks Tom, but unless there are permissions other than the shared folder on the new volume, it is not a permissions issue. The shared folder on the new volume already has read/write permission for Plex. I read through the article you attached and other than the fact that I don’t see a “Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files” box to check, I did all this before posting here. But, thanks for the quick response. Much appreciated.

Thanks Chuck. Yeah, I did all that. But thank you.

To what system account have you assigned the read/write permissions and what version of DSM is installed on your Syno?

I have DSM 7.0.1-42218

Admin & plex both have read/write permission

guest as No Access

May I point you here ?

While this happens most often after migrating from DSM 6, it still applies when creating new shared folders.

You want to grant permission for “System Internal User” PlexMediaServer.

Chuck, I think that did it! Much appreciated. Thank you both Chuck and Tom for your help.
