Plex on Synology NAS with HDHomeRun FLEX 4k - Source is unavailable

Server Version#: 1.29.1.6316-7000
Player Version#:
Tuner Make/Model: HDHomeRun FLEX 4k
Guide/Lineup name:
Using XMLTV?:
Channel number/Name: any

Hello. I am having a PLEX problem watchin any live tv from the newly installed HDHomeRun FLEX 4k. The installation in the “Live TV & DVR” went without a problem. It detected the tuner, pulled all the channel listings, however when I go to watch any channels it tells me “Playback error” “Source is unavailable”.
I looked at the logs in the HDHomeRun and it shows the tuner to select that channel when I make the channel selection in Plex.
Also HDHomeRun works fine natively, I can watch any channels when used with its own app in Amazon Fire stick, so I don’t think is a problem with it.
I must be missing some configuration in Plex. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Do you have “Convert Video While Recording” turned on?

No, I have it set to off, just like in your picture.

Any other suggestions of what may be going on?
Thanks in advance.

Does this only happen with 4k Programing, 1080, 720, SD? or does it not matter, no channels will tune?

Are you using a client or just the web app?

Same issue using pms on linux. Do you have the same error I am getting: LiveTV: Failed to initialize VAAPI connection: -1 (unknown libva error) It happened when I upgraded my PMS version. Everything works natively on the device and I can get and scan for channels. I have deleted and recreated the DVR multiple times. I am convinced it is a recent PMS bug.

I see the following unique log lines:

It happens for any of the HD or SD channels no matter the resolution.
If I open Plex from within the Synology NAS on my computer and then try to watch any live tv channels I get “Playback Error” “Source is unavailable”.
If I open Plex through Amazon Fire Stick and go to TV Live I get “Error” “Unable to play media”
I know there is no problem with HDHomeRun because I can watch all the channels through Amazon Fire Stick when I go straight to the HDHomeRun app.

I was looking at the spec for the flex 4K. It may be outputting HVEC. Which may need to be transcoded by Plex to be able to view on some devices and your Synoligy NAS may not be up to the task.

You could try setting up PMS on a windows machine and configuring the DVR service as a test to see if you can get Plex to tun in a channel. and check playback status to see if it is indeed transcoding HVEC to h264 or something else.

You may also want to try and watch a channel and grab logs from PMS on your synology to see what’s going on.

The VAAPI error @seanwo1 mentioned is from Plex trying to use Hardware transcoding and failing.

Hello VTon21 and thank you for your response.
Why would Plex try to transcode an SD channel, that’s the channel type that I was trying to watch? I didn’t even try to watch an HD channel none of the less an HVEC channel.

Well if the HDHomerun is outputting HEVC and you are on a device that does not support HEVC it will transcode.

I have a quadro and it uses mpeg2 which I see plex transcode to h264 for playback on some devices. Which is why you should check your logs for the vaapi errors. that will tell you it’s trying to transcode and cannot.

Any updates on this?
