Plex Server Keeps Disconnecting the PC from the network.......

Hi Team

Been struggling with this for the past week and not making much progress.

Was working perfectly as a Plex Server for a year with Win10 on it until I had to mess around with it :frowning:

Upgraded it to the latest Win10
Upgraded the BIOS of the Minix PC
Installed VNC Connect.

And things started to go wrong - essentially the unit disconnects from the network when using Plex to stream content. Plex is not reachable and neither is the unit on the local LAN…no IP Connectivity.

Or when using VNC and Plex simultaneously.

In order to bring it back - I either have to wait for a hour OR reboot the box. As a Plex server the unit is no longer functional as this defeats the purpose… :frowning:

Plex has been setup correctly - reachable both internally and externally - so that is not the issue.
Connectivity is via Ethernet - 100MB FULL.

I have since

Fresh install W10
Downgraded from Win10 to Win8.1 with a fresh install twice.
Updated the drivers for graphics, Realtek USB
Reinstalled Plex numerous times
Firewall & Defender and OFF

Has anyone experienced similar issues before and if so how did you resolve them?

Once I get back home I will be able to access the logs and post them to assist with troubleshooting.

Hmm interesting. I noticed a similar habit of my plex on win 7. Suddenly at about the same time each day I noticed my pc connection to the internet is halted or out right the router. I too either reboot or disable and reanble the network card in the pc which fixes it. I thought it was something else but now wondering if its PLEX too doing this somehow. And yes I was using my pc point in time usually playing a recording while its also recording current material. At first I started working with my network configuration and my router. Its as if my ip address expires but I did have it set to not expire and ip associated to the mac address as always was the case. So maybe we have detected yet another problem

It is absoluletly PLEX disocnnecting or causing it to disconnect to the router. It just happened only 3 minutes into the start of 2 recordings. PLEX I hope you fix this issue too! WOW. I just stopped and started my network by disabling and then enabling the LAN item in WIN 7.

Update

Seems like plex is initiating what looks like a DOS attack on the network resulting in the resident mimic pc dropping off the network and that clan to be flooded with packages as reported by the switch and AP

How do you recommend I troubleshoot this?

What packets ? Could you capture with wireshark ?
There may be repeated discovery udp and ssdp packets but they would every few seconds and not hundreds a second.

Also logs with debug logging may have clues

Update. Seems to me like plex sends out a packet(s) that creates what seems like a spanning tree loop. I disabled multicast pass-through on the network and that has done the trick. Plex has been working fine for the past 5/6 hrs with various clients - safari & iOS.

Where did you exactly do this where you say “I disabled multicast pass-through on the network”? In your PC or in the router or?

Switch and AP

If you get me details of the packets that you believe are wrong, i will discuss with the development team

Plex Media Server does send broadcasts and multicast SSDP packets every few seconds as part of the network discovery process for servers and players

Hi mate

Don’t have any additional details to share other than the symptoms I described and what I had to do at the network level to address it. For my home network switching off multicast forward is acceptable - for many other networks that may not be an option in which case plex will continue to effectively create symptoms like I have described and bring the network segment down.

Certainly one for the developers to consider replicating in their environment to investigate further if they are so inclined.

What is different about your environment ?

Plex has been sending broadcasts and SSDP multicasts for years and there is no issue with that, They are sent every few seconds.

Could it not be the way your network is setup ?

See this article from cisco

So I was recording the giants game on fox 5 channel which was fine as scheduled. Then I decided to watch it live while recording. With in 5 minutes after doing that my network got disconnected of the plex server/pc to the router to get to the HD HOME RUN which is was recording from. Only 1 recording going on, nothing else on the PC. Nothing has changed on this PC since upgrading to the PLEX pass to be able to DVR. I have never had this issue before with byte my tongue WMC. This is very unreliable. It does not see to be time dependent since its Sunday about 2pm and the other times happen to be week nights either at 6pm or even 9pm EST. So PLEX recording is definitely causing this as far as I am concerned.

Not sure whether it is indeed a bridge loop…certainly has similar symptoms but not conclusive. My Home switch router combo has no spanning tree controls - never had a problem with it for years until now. What is however conclusive is that the minix PC works perfectly fine with PMS off - as soon as I would switch on PMS and start to access it via a client it would crash the PC and flood the network. So Plex is the trigger.

2 days after making the changes on the network (disabling multicast forward) and Plex is holding up great.

Certainly interested in understanding what it is that Plex is doing however super pleased that my setup is working like a charm now

Hey =)

I am facing exactly the same problem.

I have 2 PCs (1 Laptop, Server with Plex Media Center) and 1 Desktop (Client).
I have a Lan cable coming directly from the Router (Fritzbox 6490 Cable) to a switch (TP-Link TL-SG105 5-port Gigabit) and from that switch each a lan cable going to the server and the client.
All was working great, until a few days ago, when my internet would stop working every time I started watching something on my Desktop machine.

Where would I find the option you are talking about?

Thank you very much!
Dustin

I think the problem was Avast. I uninstalled it, didn’t change any other settings and now it is working without any problems.

Never mind, just after posting this, Plex disconnected the internet once again …

This problem is showing its ugly head again since the last 2 beta release pre 4803. I dont understand how you build a product and break things that are working fine when you should be adding function and/or perfecting other functions that need it. PLEASE FIX whatever it is you broke again that is hogging up the network card resources causing one to have to disable and enable their server to obtain internet access again. In this case while recording a program I was playing it live. WIN 7 platform via browswser to local Plex sever on one pc connected on the same network as a HD HOMERUN 3 tuner cablecard. This is getting tiresome and me thinks I will stick to release version only for now on. This happened late last fall in 2017 similarly as you see from these posts.

I am sorry but would need diagnostics of the issue to have it investigated
Plex Media Server logs, wireshark packet capture, some network stats from Windows Resource Monitor (available in task manager)

let me see if the beta 4803 fixed anything.
