Plex Server Starting But Not Accessible (after re-install)

Server Version#: PlexMediaServer-1.43.0.10389-8be686aa6-x86_64_DSM72.spk

Player Version#: PlexMediaServer-1.43.0.10389-8be686aa6-universal.zip

Hi, I have a Synology DS1019+ NAS Server and I am running DSM 7.3.2-86009

On my NAS I have two file shares set up.

1. My content saved on a Share called Plex,

2. A share dedicated to running the Plex Media Server called PlexmediaServer.

I noticed the PlexMediaServer share was huge and decided to delete and re-install to trim back thumbnails etc…

In the Package Center I uninstalled the Plex Media Server and then removed the PlexMediaServer share, and the PlexMediaServer service account.

I recreated the share re-installed PlexMediaServer and recreated the share and gave the PlexMediaServer account permissions. The problem: Although PlexMediaServer starts in the Package Center on my DS1019 I cannot now access the server.

When I try to locally connect to the Plex server on my LAN using http://192.nnn.nn.nn:32400/web (LAN IP address masked for anonymity) I get the following error:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

Can anyone suggest a fix for this. I reinstalled the server on 7th January and it now 14th January. I looks like the install did not work or there is something preventing it starting up properly. If someone has suggestions on how to improve the Plex Server logging details (what is it actually doing and where is it stuck) I would greatly appreciate it.

You did not need to go Nuclear. Thumbnails can be removed / disabled on a per-library-section basis.

Given you chose :collision: , We can let the package itself (it’s built in) do the reclaiming for you.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it. I am a total klutz I know, I’m really kicking myself for not reading more about how to control thumbnails.

I’ll follow steps below and revert back. However, before I do I should clarify. When I did the original uninstall I unfortunately DID use the nuclear option and chose the red option Erase all of Plex Media Sever from this system (Not Recoverable)

So although I have re-installed and set permissions etc, and used a claim token code to try and claim my server, it did not work. SO am not sure it will be any different if I do the same again.

Best Rgds,

Mark

I look at Plex.tv and don’t see any server under this (the forum’s) email account.
Should I be looking elsewhere?

As for the Syno, make certain DNS and the Default Gateway are correctly configured.

  • DNS to a Public DNS provider
  • Gateway IP to your modem/router.

Hi, I purchased a Lifetime Plex Pass 19th January 2020. Hope you can see that somewhere on my account.

I just checked and the DNS and Gateway are set up correctly. DNS is set to Google 8.8.8.8 and the Gateway is set to my Router IP address.

The forum shows me you hold a current Plex Pass :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Easiest way, on a Synology, is this fFAQ

Resetting permissions / reclaiming is done by the app.

Chuck, U R A star! It is all working ok now. Thank you. I’m tweaking the thumbnail settings and looking at other ways to optimise the storage use now. Many thanks again for all your help and advice. Best Rgds, Mark
