Plex video playback starts stuttering on NVIDIA Shield Pro but not on Roku - Revisit

I have a network share on the PC with drive letters for the Shield and for all connected hard drives. The connection is via smb3 and I use Total Commander on the PC to copy.
I like the “Xplore” file manager on the Shield.

Thanks for version 10.22
Appreciate the work going into fixing this

Spent the night doing some testing this is what I came up with here

Or you could just paste the link into the address bar on the Downloader app, download the APK direct to the Shield, and install from there, no USB or ADB needed.

@nx6

I’ve tried using google links directly before. They don’t always work.
If it works for shield, GREAT

@dfegw424

Is this the infamous “High Bitrate EAC-3” problem?

If so, may I have a sample of the file? I would very much like to replicate here so I can discuss with PMS & Shield teams.

Also, please explain/detail what you mean here? I’m not understanding.

. But unfortunately for me the issue is still there with other files.

I tried it on my Fire Stick 4K Max. The apk didn’t install, ofc, since it’s ARMv8, but I was able to use your GDrive link fine. I think there was some compatibility issue with Downloader’s browser and the GDrive site’s pages that has been resolved now.

The file I provided is ONLY for Nvidia Shield Pro 2019

Google’s site is bot-hardened to stop bots from mining URLs.

I know. I just did it that way because I was sitting in the room with a Fire Stick and the TV with the Shield Pro was in use at the time by someone else in the home.

I seem to be out of the loop, what is this issue with “high bitrate EAC3” audio? I have my Shield’s HDMI passthrough on specifically because of issues with EAC3 not working on some files otherwise.

There seems to be reports where high bitrate audio (not sure what qualifies as ‘high bitrate’) so I’d love to get a sample and repro it.

TV’s free now, so I can install this. Can clip something if I can find out what qualifies and can reproduce.

thanks. greatly appreciated

A link is a link is a link? :man_shrugging:

Doesn’t matter to me, I don’t need this fix, I was just trying to help everybody else who was struggling with the concept of sideloading by making it simpler.

Thanks for the response.

No I wouldn’t say it’s high nitrate. 224kbps EAC3 stereo.

I’ve turned off auto on the shield for format selection and selected manual and selected all audio formats. Testing again now

Edit
Someone in a different thread said theirs works fine but their shield is on 9.2.0
Mine is on 9.1.1 (33.2.0.157)
I’ll Google see how to get the latest hotfix. Checking on the shield itself says it’s up to date

The fact NVidia isn’t releasing this update for everyone makes me question how tested it is. It reads like beta if you have to install it yourself manually.

I’ve been running it for about 2 weeks and seen 0 issues , seems it was ready to go but then Nvidia just pulled the plug in the shield development

  1. Yes, Nvidia did shutdown Shield v2 development.
    – More money in GPUs for AI
    – Intel’s fubar in the CPU market has spurred Nvidia to enter the CPU market.
(It’s going to be interesting where that path leads but I bet it’ll take the RISC path)

  2. Even though the Shield line will get no further development, they are still making them. That said, I am going to buy as needed and install right up to the supported 9.1.1 Shield Experience OS level… because it’s solid for all I do with Plex. It’s a fantastic PLAYER. NOT good as a server.

  3. Might Nvidia return to the desktop player market ? Time will tell.

I’m not sure your issue is because you are on 9.1.1 and not 9.2.0. I watched a 40 minute episode with EAC3. I started it with my public version of Plex (10.20) and got really annoyed with the frame drops. Side loaded this 10.22 alpha to finish it and no frame drops. My shield pro 2019 is on 9.1.1 no hotfix.

I know this isn’t a perfect test so I’ll run more tests tomorrow with a longer movie or something.

Ok Shield Pro Firmware updated to 9.2.0 plex is on 10.22.0.1493 still an issue with EAC3 audio.
It must be a setting somewhere on mine if it’s working for others

Shield Settings
Audio Output - HDMI
Dolby Vision - On
Match Content Audio Resolution - Off
Dolby Audio Processing - Off
Available formats - Manual - all selected

Plex Settings
Passthrough - HDMI
Refresh Rate Switching - On
Resolution Switching - On
Remote Streaming Quality - Original

Thanks in advance for any comparison and help

Scratch what I said. I tired an EAC3+Atmos movie today and it was dropping frames right after starting like crazy! This is on 10.22 Alpha, via a Soundbar to the LG C9.

I changed one setting and it just ran the full length (1hr 40min) with not a single dropped frame. I turned OFF Refresh Rate Switching. Then its perfect.

I’ll do more testing today and come back with results.

Turned off Refresh Rate Switching. Still dropping frames unfortunately
