Plexamp App Menu not showing on Linux/Ubuntu

Hi,

I was looking into playing my music remotely with Plexamp and it’s working with only one major problem: I cannot switch libraries.

How to switch libraries is described in the F.A.Q. but as a matter of fact, there is no app menu at all on my system.
[correction: the one item in my app menu lets me quit the application]

Any suggestions?

OS#: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: plexamp-1.1.0-x86_64.AppImage

There should be a tray menu for the app. If you don’t see it, try setting the environment variable XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity.

That was almost it. Thanks!

Since I’m using the Gnome Shell for a desktop, the tray is disabled and I could not see Plexamp’s tray menu.

However, installing the TopIcons Plus extension solved the problem by showing the missing the tray menu icon in the top panel. At least solved it for now. It seems the gnome project will not support tray icons in the long term.

Is this the same solution for Budgie desktop?

It might be! Let us know

TopIcons Redux also solves the problem. However, the proper solution would be to add support for ApplicationIndicators in Plexamp (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperienceTeam/ApplicationIndicators). This would not rely on legacy features. It can be used with https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator
Do the Plex devs plan to support this?

FWIW, the app menu does not appear in the wingpanel of elementary Linux either. I’ve tried the various combinations of setting XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP to unity, gnome, pantheon, etc. both from the command line and within the .desktop file.

Is there anything else that can be tried?

Even with TopIcons Redux on Ubuntu 18.04, I still can’t see the Plexamp menu.

This player isn’t very useful if you can’t control it.
