PMS stopped working on nVidia Shield

Server Version#:???cannot find the server???
Player Version#:does it matter?

  • wife comes to me again, “Plex is not working.”
  • checked my phone, computer, Shield. nope, no PMS
  • go into Apps in Shield. PMS is waiting for an update
** why does PMS stop running when an update is available?
  • update PMS and Player. PMS still not running.
  • restart Shield. PMS still not running.
  • power cycle Shield. PMS still not running.

Android says PMS is ‘running’.
what else can we do here?
does uninstall and reinstall lose libraries setup?

Yes, PMS is currently not working. In my particular situation, I was not waiting for an update, but any new content I added to my server was not being scanned by the metadata agents. I was able to play content, but I could not access the server settings from within Plex Web. Remote access was also turned off.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the server will lose library setup unless you do a backup. Your libraries will need to be re-scanned and all custom metadata will be lost.

Mine stopped working as well. I tried going into the plex app on the shield and re-enabling it but it’s just stuck on enabling for the “first time”, just spins and I’ve left it for 3 hours now.

I agree with @intelligentle . I’m on the beta for shield, pms, and plex. almost 90% of the issues that i had so far is due to an update to the PMS. It just seems to break something critical. Almost always the solution is to uninstall/install PMS and rescan the whole library. I just do it before i sleep because i have a big library.

after resetting everything up, everything always work perfectly.

Am i upset? Yes. But this is the Beta life.

So…PMS for nVidia Shield is completely broken? Is there a note about this anywhere?

Was hoping updates would fix Live TV and DVR, instead it broke the whole thing…?

Yes, it’s “broken” for those on the Beta channel, unless you completely reset your server and libraries. It’s a pain in the butt since all your metadata will be lost and you’ll have to recreate your libraries.

There are a couple of other threads where the original problem was first brought up.

I would keep track of these to see if the Plex ninjas or devs respond with anything. Right now, I am going to stay off the Beta channel since I don’t want to have to keep having to rebuild my libraries every time something goes wrong.

At one point I turned on Beta thinking it would provide Live TV and DVR. But that only applied to PC(?). Thought I went back to turn off beta. But maybe not…?

I do NOT want beta. Seeing as how PMS is broken, how do I stop?

help?

Turned off Beta, uninstalled updates, reinstalled updates.

Still not working.

Where does one go for help?

Did you “uninstall updates” for the Plex Media Server through Google Play on the Shield itself?

Make sure then to restart your Shield and then re-install the updates through Google Play on the the Shield for PMS.

You will then go through the setup process as if you’re setting up your server for the first time. (Naming server, re-adding libraries, scanning libraries etc.)

I’ve done this as well but still just get a spinning setting up the plex server for the first time…

See if you can go back to a different screen. That happened to me as well where it got stuck on that screen for a little bit. Also try opening the Plex client app on the Shield to see if that will jumpstart anything.

You will eventually see the startup screen to start the server. You could also try “force stopping” the app in the Shield system settings.

thanks everyone!

thought PMS would just start after installing updates (i.e. standard Android behavior). its in the man cave and I was trying to get lunch. when I went back, PMS was waiting to start. seems to be working now.

back to waiting for Live TV and DVR…
