PMS unavailable after upgrading to 1.43.0

Actually, I upgraded to 1.43.0.10467 on my Synology server recently. About 18 hours ago, my server lost its mind and became completely unavailable. I waited. Never became available. And this is where my 12 hour trip from hell began is I lost (unclaimed) my server and tried to reconnect it to my Plex account. 12 hours in, Plex Media Server is running, sees my server but I’m back to where I started. I just stumbled across a post that suggests that you’ve pulled the most recent version and I need to back up to 1.42.2.10156 which Synlology DSM 7.3+ will absolutely not allow. It’s ugly. I can see my server but Plex won’t claim it and it tells me that there is an update that I need to install manually…which, of course, there isn’t. Anyone have a suggestion?

Do NOT downgrade Plex. If you do downgrade, you must uninstall Plex first, then reinstall using the earlier package. Make sure you Keep All Files.

Go to Plex Downloads and get another copy of Plex for your NAS.

Then uninstall Plex on the NAS and use the first option (Keep All Files).

Then install Plex and use the Plex Token method to claim the server during install.

If Plex becomes unavailable again, the first thing to do is to reboot your modem/router and everything connected to it, including any wireless devices.

Don’t forget to check if Plex is running in Package Center > Installed before doing anything else.

I just went through a similiar mess with Plex and Terra-master after an OS upgrade(check it out under Terra-master). I find all three(Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin) flaky to run and extremely problematic to manage. I’ve installed a different media server. I don’t know if it will be better, but with the way it stands now, it certainly can’t be worse.

I appreciate your Feedback.

I don’t say this lightly, as I’m prepared to lose dozens of playlist and collections that represent 10s of hours of work, There is no way I am considering Plex as any solution. Furthermore, after 11 days of tech support(including 3 remote sessions equalling 9 hours of badly spent time) I would take my TM hardware out into a field and go all “Office Space on it’s ass. But I can’t afford it.

So I’ve installed some different software, and guess what, It Launches!

Waving bye-bye to Plex, and when I can afford it, TM is next.

I’m sorry that you’ve has such a poor experience. I’ve been running my server for over five years and, while it can be cranky, I’ve been very happy with it…until just recently. I do hope you have better luck with your new solution. For now, I’m going to keep plugging away. I have my server breathing, not well, but breathing and I am hopeful that I will be able to recover everything.

Thank you for your suggestions. After around 17 hours trying every suggested solution I could find, including yours of downgrading, I ended up with the nuclear option. I completely wiped every sign of Plex from my Synology server I could find and reinstalled fresh from the last known stable version. Everything came up fine BUT Plex will still not let me reclaim my server. I ended up installed a Windows version on my local PC and rebuilding everything. It’s working…sort of. I’m finding that the PC version has its own peculiarities and does not perform as well overall as the Synology version. I still hope to figure out a way to reclaim my original server. We’ll see.

  1. Stop Plex Media Server on the Synology NAS
  2. In Authorized Devices, delete the Plex Synology server and any old/unused servers.
This removes them from your account.
  3. Follow FAQ 31: Reset / Reclaim PMS on DSM 7 (Not Authorized - Locked Out)

If the FAQ is successful, you will see a “PlexMediaServer successfully claimed” message.

If the FAQ does not work:

  1. post a screenshot of the failure message.
  2. Manually pull a set of server log files and post to the thread
  • If running, stop Plex Media Server
  • In File Station, navigate to the Plex Data Folder.
  • Right click on Logs and choose “compress to logs.zip.”
  • download the zip file & post to the thread.

From what you have stated, it seems like you have a network issue and the Plex server on your NAS is not able to communicate with plex.tv properly.

Reboot the modem/router and everything connected to it, including any wireless devices. That should clear any DNS cache corruption that may be causing your issue.

Make sure all of your devices are on the same subnet. That is, all devices should have an IP address with the same first 3 octets, the 4th octet being different for each device.

E.G. 192.168.0.x

Disable the Firewall in DSM Control Panel > Security > Firewall, if you have not already done so and then check your router settings etc.

Remove any Port Forward rules you may have added to the router, at least until you can establish a proper connection.

Make sure you also follow @FordGuy61’s advice as well.

@Sneller61

I did not provide you with any feedback, my comments were directed to the OP.

Terra-Master have been around for quite a while, but their OS has not matured as much as it should have, at least not when compared to Synology DSM or QNAP’s OS.

That said, the biggest issues with Plex are your file naming and organisation. If you get that wrong at all, it can make a real mess of Plex.

Make sure you read and follow the Plex guidelines. Your Media | Plex Support

Another potential issue, is with file permissions. If they are incorrectly set, then Plex is not going to run correctly either.

Remember, you are dealing with Linux permissions which are much more strict than Windows or Mac OS.

As for Emby, I find it runs quite well on my Synology NAS, but I prefer Plex over Emby. I do use Emby for Music though.

Jellyfin was flaky for me also, I cannot recommend it at all, to be fair though, it has been quite some time since I tried it.

I here ya.

I had administered PCs, and Macs since Windoze 3.1 and Mac OS 7, and even saw the birth of Red Hat.

files are immaculate and and permissions are always checked(because they never revert to a default setting, right?)

This is the second kick at the can I’ve given Plex, and I’ve discovered not much has changed over the years: 1) Problems are identical, seems like nothing much has been accomplished over the past 5 years 2) the absolutely obscene amount of time and effort users make to keep their servers running.

I briefly tried Emby on a TM F2 unit 4- years ago, but after I had 2 weeks of 24/7 hyper disk activity, I moved on to flaky Jellyfin.

I’m going to attempt Emby again.

Every time there was an OS or Plex upgrade, it was a nightmare. Every. Single. Time.

I am furious at Plex for the loss of my Playlists and collections.

I don’t know if I’ll have a better experience with Emby, but I do know I’ve left the nightmare of Plex behind.

Have a Good Week

If this is true, then clearly you are doing something wrong, the software is not nearly that bad and should be reasonably stable.

Yes, all software has it’s bugs, but Plex does not have that many considering how much Plex actually does under the bonnet.

Plex is NOT responsible for your Playlists or Collections, that is in your court I’m afraid.

Data backups are important! Not sure what TM offer for backups, but worst case, you can always write and execute a script to perform your Plex data backups.

Just because you monitor your file names and organisation, does NOT mean you have them correct. Plex is quite flexible, but that can also get you into trouble.

If you can provide a screenshot of your media organisation and file naming, maybe someone will spot an issue, or not.

You haven’t stated exactly what issues you have with Plex. Who knows, maybe someone can help with your issues, if you just let us know what they are.

And yes, I too remember when Linus first released Linux. My BBS message board was awash with chatter about Linux at the time (I was an Amiga guy back then ;).

I looked at it, but did not find it compelling, keep in mind I was working full time + back then, and didn’t have much time to spare for new adventures.

Tech Support - Plex-TM-Tell Me What I’m doing Wrong!!

The Bottom Line Is This:

A brand new TM F4-424 PRO, the latest approved PMS, AND YET, The combined technical support of Plex and TM is unable to get Plex to launch.

One server,One application - both companies failed.

To this day I have not received a solution. Still can’t launch it. What’s Up? It’s approved from both sides. Why isn’t it launching?

I have followed every instruction to the letter. Endured repetitve requests from both sides when it was obvious after a while they guessing.

Again, TELL ME WHAT I”M DOING WRONG! Nine hours in Remote sessions, and I Dare You - TELL ME WHAT I’M GOING WRONG!

One Server. One App. Total Failure.

The only thing I can tell you is to make sure you have the correct version of Plex for your version of TM OS, installed.

If Plex is attempting to run, it will spit out logs and those logs should hold some clues to the issue.

If Plex is not spitting out logs, then the OS may not be attempting to run Plex at all, which may be related to file permissions.

Other than that, I cannot be of much help to you since I am not versed in the TM OS at all.

A shout out to @ChuckPa, he is responsible for the Plex NAS installer routines and fingers crossed, he may have some knowledge of the TM OS that could help you.
