That happens when the movie isn’t named correctly and no metadata is being pulled
https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-movie-media-files/
That isn’t the case here, I just finished going through and renaming each movie to match the title that it is found under in Plex online. For instance, “2 Fast 2 Furious” has the file name “2 Fast 2 Furious (2003).mp4”, but it is pulling a movie scene instead of the movie cover.
After you rename something a lot of times you have to Plex dance the file for it to show up
If it still isn’t working you may have to upload your logs. The only other reason i can think of is something on your network is blocking you from the Plex metadata agents
Is it just a handful of movies or everything you try?
I have over 3300 movies, and I would say it is doing it to about half. I can edit and it will pull up multiple posters, but the movie scene is already selected. I just completely uninstalled Plex from my Synology and removed the appdata folder before reinstalling. I then unchecked the Local Media Assets agent from Movies, Shows, and Music before adding the first library. Still I’m getting movie scenes instead of the covers.
Hello JaysPlex7, I’ve never uploaded logs before, so let me know if I do this wrong. Here they are.
Plex Media Server Logs_2023-05-28_14-56-04.zip (3.9 MB)
Does any other metadata show up like the movie description?
Can you go in and select a poster manually for the movies with missing posters?
Do you see any similarities between what you’re experiencing and the person in this thread?
Your logs look fine, unfortunately I don’t really read logs. You’ll have to wait for an employee or Ninja to take a look.
You can monitor the other thread until then to see if BigWheel has any ideas on what you can try
Hi maybe you have same bug
Not quite the same, I don’t think. Once I set the cover it stays, or at least I’ve not seen them disappear. What I’m dealing with is the movie scenes are being selected instead any of covers that are available. For example, the movie “13 Going on 30” has the file name “13 Going On 30 (2004).mp4” and it pulls all the correct metadata except for the poster. Title, Sort Title, Originally Available, Content Rating, and so on is all filled out correctly. But if you go to poster, as you can see, it is selecting the screenshot instead of the one of the multitudes of other selections.
Does the mp4 file have an image embedded in it? Is “prefer local metadata” enabled in the advanced setting of library.
Hello BigWheel,
I don’t think the mp4 file has an image in it, I put the EXIFTool output below. As far as the “prefer local metadata” setting, I don’t see that setting, and I checked the advanced settings also.
EXIFTool Output:
ExifTool Version Number : 12.62
File Name : 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003).mp4
Directory : Z:/Movies/Need to be catagorized Movies
File Size : 12 GB

File Access Date/Time : 2023:05:31 09:57:56-04:00
File Creation Date/Time : 2022:12:25 14:30:13-05:00
File Permissions : -rw-rw-rw-
File Type : MP4
File Type Extension : mp4
MIME Type : video/mp4
Major Brand : MP4 v2 [ISO 14496-14]
Minor Version : 0.0.0

The movie file likely has an embedded poster. Edit the library go to Advanced and unselect both “Use local assets” and “Prefer local metadata” then refresh the metadata for the item.
I want to give a shoutout to @drzoidberg33 ! His solution resolved my issue. After removing everything from the library, I had to put a single file back in so the scan would happen, I scanned the library files, Then I clicked More > at the bottom of the left menu, I then went to the name of my server at the top of the left menu and hovered over the server name. That made the more actions menu visible. I clicked the dropdown by Manage Server and emptied trash, cleaned bundles and optimized the database. I then added all the files back to the folder and scanned the library files again. When it completed downloading the metadata out of almost 3400 movies, less than 50 had the wrong type of cover. Most of those were due to multiple movies, for example, Journey To The Center of the Earth, there were three movies by that name in 2008, of the same name in the same year. A few were mislabeled, wrong date, or wrong name. But much better than previous where about 75% were picking up the wrong picture. Thanks again @drzoidberg33
