It feels like we’re at a point where this will not be fixed and is not being actively worked on. It’s just how it is.
Same here! I have lots of files that cant be transcoded but only viewable by stream, which on PS5 doesn’t work. That’s a shame because there is no tech support here, it sends to the forums where not a single admin answers. Shame on you plex team.
This post was made one year ago and there hasn’t been a single update from anyone at Plex regarding this issue since it was made.
Just read the thread an i’m a new PS5 owner. I am a lifetime user since 2015, and it’s an extreme disappointment that i am not able to stream movies with high bitrate to my PS5. The PS5 is a very powerful system, and i can’t really see any reason why you would let this be a problem for so long, given the large userbase on PS5
I’ll add my frustration to this. I was causally googling the issue that I have had since I got my PS5 and Cannot believe there has been nothing done for something that makes Plex unusable!
Exactly. Worst part is that there is no support. Support on the website leads to forums where not a single admin answers. Nice job…
I hate to say it, but maybe calling them out on their social media posts has to happen to escalate this.
So I posted to twitter on one of their streaming promo posts:

Thumbs held we get a response
Oh wow!! They answer there? Thanks @russbgrant, Hopefully they’ll hear you and get it done.
You’re more optimistic than I am. 24hours and nothing updated here. :S
Hi all, apologies for the late reply! I’m sorry for the experience those of you affected are having, but we haven’t forgotten about you. Internally we have been discussing possible changes that may solve these issues for you, but they involve work in several different areas and it will take time.
In the short term we’d have hoped that the OS update that Sony put out would have addressed the issue for some of you, but that appears to not be the case for everyone. In that case I would ask two things of you:
A) Could you send some sample media that consistently reproduces the issue in your client and let me know which PMS version you’re using.
B) Can you try this alpha version of PMS (v1.27.1.5879-1b2a5224f, links below) and let me know if it improves the issue for any of you.
Thanks!

Thank you for the update.
I can send a short file that wouldn’t play later when I’m back home. Is there an email to send it too?
Just tried the alpha version v1.27.1.5879-1b2a5224f for windows. Same issue on PS5. I just dont understand why this issue does not appear on PS4. Im testing PS4 now, everything works perfect. PS5 lags after some seconds… just stops like it buffers something, but obviously it is not.
As I said earlied, I’ve tried everytihng, to play with the settings, to change cables, even changed the router, nothing helped.
Unfortunately cant send the media file as it is huge 47 gigabytes.
@russbgrant You can DM me the link if you like.
@77leon77 The PS4 and the PS5 are very different devices, even if they’re in the same family line. You can try sending a small cut of the problematic media to me if you like. See Generating Sample Files from Media | Plex Support.
Sorry, I didn’t get a chance to get the file last night. I want to test it on the PS4 as well, I’m sure it played fine on it last I checked. it’s an older .mpg file so I presume it should still be compatible.
I’ve downloaded the MKVtoolnix and created small sample but it’s 446mb, where can I send it?
You could upload it on google drive or similar and send me the link.
Sent it in DM.
I can tell you that for me at least it seems to be directly related to the bitrate of the video and the most consistent issues occur with .mkv files with a bitrate greater than roughly 17Mbps. If I encode two movies using the exact same settings but one is under something close to 17Mbps and the other is over 17Mpbs, the one that is over will likely experience buffering and the unexpected playback error and the one that is under will be more likely to work properly.
I definitely still get the error with some files that are below 17Mbps but it’s almost certain that it will happen with movies that are above that bitrate.
I sent you a problem file link as a direct message.
@77leon77 Thanks for the sample. I can reproduce the issue and have verified that it plays correctly with some upcoming changes to the app.
@roobieroo Thanks for the sample. I can also reproduce your issue, but it requires some more investigation.
