This sample that I’ve sent you is only 60 seconds, and when I tried this exact small sample on PS5 it was running fine, but the whole movie form which i got this sample does not. So it looks like the problem is very similar to Mr @roobieroo, but maybe not the bitrate is the issue, but the size of a video?? I dont know, this is just a theory. Hopefully you’ll find the problem. fingers crossed ![]()

This isn’t my experience. Some files seem to be okay. Some buffer/blackscreen but will work if I lower the resolution(I’m guessing forcing transcoding is making it work). Some won’t play at all.
@Moussa I noticed that you can display details of the files you are playing on the TV, and what the plex app is doing. Would posting pictures of these help when it buffers/black screens?

Does the current latest Plex for PS5 application support the direct play of a video file with below mediainfo?
x264, MKV with ASS subtitles and AAC 2.0 audio.

No it doesnt. I’ve tried 7 older versions including 1.25, the heavy files with very high bitrate still buffer with direct stream on PS5.
Ah ok, sorry I guess you’re right about that. I think I don’t have any files with really high bitrates in my collection. But on the other hand I have older SD files that never stopped buffering when played back with the new server version (which is even weirder). This problem seems to be gone with the old server version.
Maybe these are separate problems ![]()
@alexander8989 I have the same issue. Older files that you can’t lower the bitrate on so you can not play them. I have one I can send in if they want to test it.
The app update that just went out (v5.41.1) contains some player changes that should help with some of the issues reported here. We are aware that this doesn’t resolve all issues however, and we’re continuing to look into them.

Just a reminder that this doesn’t update like other PS5 apps and to close the app and relaunch so that it updates. So far I’ve tried three different 1080p MKV files that my PS5 has never been able to play without buffering and each one has made it past where it used to stop before. So far so good. Thanks for continuing to work on this.
@Moussa I just tried the older .mpg file that I never did send you and it worked with no playing around and the direct stream/direct play boxes both checked.
I’ll keep an eye out for other files over the next few days but this was a good win since it was one of the ones that was SD and couldn’t have the resolution lowered to make it play.
Cant believe this!!!Today I’ve managed to watch my video-file with high( 98mb) bitrate which before was available only on ps4, now it plays great via direct stream on ps5 too!! Strange thing is, that it happened even before I’ve updated the media server on my PC. Well I dont know what exactly did you do @Moussa but thank you for this update! Hopefully my other movies will play too. Thanks again!!!

I tested on two movies that didn’t work previously with DirecPlay
The Batman (2022) (1080p BluRay x265 10bit Tigole).mkv - 7.05 GB / 5733 kbps Video Bitrate - Direct Play stoped working on 0:39 min.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) (1080p BluRay x265M SAMPA) - 5.52 GB / 6996 kbps Video Bitrate - Direc Play also stoped and started infinity buffer on 0:39 min.
Weird…
Maybe I need to upgrade PMS to newer version, but I don’t think it’s gonna change anything besides broken transcoding in original bitrate.
App on PS5 is up to date.
Yesterday watched on PS5 another 4k mkv movie with bitrate 17740 kbps, 10bit.HDR.x265(15.68 GB) and everything was great. No buffering at all. Try to update the PMS, maybe that’s the reason you still have issues? ![]()
I updated PMS to the newest, 1.27.1.5916 version. I can confirm that now everything it’s working great!!! FINALLY!!! I didn’t updated earlier beacuse I had enough with constantly updating and backing back to 1.25 version.
Both Batman and TMNT are working great with directplay ![]()
Now I can press “Play” with not woring about that any second the movie will stop working and loose half an hour to “repair” the movie to watchable state(downgrading quality, transcoding, changing version of the movie).
That’s good news! Now we can enjoy the app and buy the premium subscription ![]()
