RasPlex 0.5.1 released - issues and feedback

So after leaving rasplex on all night with my other pulse eight device disconnected and rasplex manually pointed to the correct HDMI port everything works perfect.

Today I will try the same thing except with my other pulse eight adapter connected to a different HDMI port.  I have a feeling it will work fine

So after a few days CEC is still working perfect. I have noticed another minor issue though. I programmed some custom key actions for CEC and about half the time raspex reverts to the default key actions. If I back out and go back into the video it will use my custom settings. Any ideas on this one?

edit: forgot to mention that when I skip forward or back in a video the indicator bar at the bottom only flashes for a hot second.

I also see this on my pi2 and macmini.

When I fast forward or back via the arrow key on the keyboard, the status display disappears really really fast. Is there a fix or workaround for this? Thanks.

I think that's not specific to Rasplex but how all PHT clients do it. Maybe better to provide that feedback in the PHT forum.

hmm.  PHT was fine on my mini.  worked way better than the windows version

You misunderstand the controls for Plex clients, including Rasplex, suggest you do some research.

The left and right arrow on a keyboard (or remote left/right) is a 'smallskip' - 30 second skip, forwards or backwards.

The up and down arrows on a keyboard (or remote up/down is a 'bigskip' - 10 minute skip, forwards or backwards.

Why would you want a workaround or a fix for something that works as intended?

FF/RW does not work in Rasplex at the moment in any version, however this will be fixed in the next release.

Ned, i think he understand how the different skips work. What i think he's reporting (and i can confirm) is that when you skip (either 30 seconds or 10 minutes), the progress bar at the bottom of the screen displays for only a fraction of a second. On PHT on OS X, when you skip forward the progress bar displays for about 2.5 seconds and then disappears.

Yes, I have seen that, but why would you want it to display for so long once the skip has been completed?

I don't think 2 seconds is that long. And until RW/FF is fixed, holding down the skip key is the only way to simulate RW/FF, which means it would be good to see where in time you are as you are skipping. The real question would be, why does PHT on Rasplex have this behavior when the other PHT clients does not. Is this something the Rasplex developers have changed in the PHT code or just a strange byproduct of the platform it's on.

FF/RW is fixed for the next release.

No changes to the code, therefore is likely to be the way the platform handles it.

Can't wait for the next release! I may play with the source code to make a version that has a longer timeout on the progress bar when skipping. I posted another thread on how to compile the latest source code as the current meta repo compiles the very outdate 0.4.x release.

As soon as we have a stable release for both RPi1 and RPi2 (0.5.x was a quick interim release to get something out for the RPi2) then it is the intention to update the Github repo.

So it works like every other PVR or player in the world.   But mainly so you can see where you are in the movie.

I noticed this too.  It's really annoying it disappears too quickly.

Should be fixed in next release, just tested it.

On Deck of all my sections disappears, is it some kind of problem of my settings?

I think you have the same problem as many others have reported, assuming that it affects not only 'On Deck' but also 'Recently Added' fanouts for each media section.

The real cause of the problem lies in the official PHT project, since it happens occasionally on Windows And Mac PCs too.
But it seems to be a bit more common for RasPlex, probably due to our lower CPU speed increasing the effect of critical race conditions.
Fortunately there is one workaround which has helped most people reduce the problem occurrences for RasPlex.

Open the System Settings menu and its submenu for Network, and there set the option to wait for network before starting the application.
That will improve results considerably. The problem may still occur, but it should not happen very often.
And when it does happen it can usually be fixed by using the restart command, so RasPlex reboots with most hardware pre-initialized.

hi dlanor,

thanks for the explanation and your solution works fine!

Hello,

Loving the new RPi2 and Rasplex, overall runs really nicely and nice and speedy.

I have found a few issues though.

  • For some reason a number of my videos/TV/Movies would not play, so I had to force on transcoding, and now everything plays fine. Unsure if this is normal or not.
  • 'Please Wait' or something like that, flashes up on the bottom right of the screen periodically when playing anything. It only flashes for a moment, hence I cannot be 100% sure what it says, but its annoying.
  • Videos stop from time to time and just go back to the main menu, for no reason. Network connection is good, using WiFi in this case, but we are close to the router and Server is just in the next room. Server is on Ethernet, Pi2 is stating excellent signal. Using an Edimax WiFi dongle.
  • Resume from xx:xx:xx doesn't work. Resuming always starts the video from the beginning again, it doesn't resume from where it states you ended last time as it should. This use to work fine. Frustrating when you watch part of something and want to come back to it and you have to start from the beginning, and then only seem to be able to skip 10 mins at a time etc.

I had a feeling there were a few other things, but I cant remember for now. Ill come back when I remember.

Thanks

That's odd, as the codec support should not have changed due to the RasPlex updates (at least not for the worse).
Are you sure that you've added the correct codec license codes in the "config.txt" for the new release. (assuming you bought licenses)

On the other hand, some people have reported problems in how transcoding is sometimes not triggered automatically for cases where it's needed. Hopefully that will work better in the next release.

  • 'Please Wait' or something like that, flashes up on the bottom right of the screen periodically when playing anything. It only flashes for a moment, hence I cannot be 100% sure what it says, but its annoying.

This normally indicates a streaming problem, such as for packet losses in WiFi transfers.

  • Videos stop from time to time and just go back to the main menu, for no reason. Network connection is good, using WiFi in this case, but we are close to the router and Server is just in the next room. Server is on Ethernet, Pi2 is stating excellent signal. Using an Edimax WiFi dongle.

WiFi connection quality tests and scanners are prone to give misleading results, as they just measure the signal strength of your own access point/router.
This does not take into account any of the various interference sources that can make a receiver lose packets regardless of the signal strength of the intended source.

Such interference isn't exclusive to other WiFi networks nearby, but also arises from many different kinds of electric and electronic equipment.
That's one of several reasons why an Ethernet connection is always superior to WiFi.

Frustrating when you watch part of something and want to come back to it and you have to start from the beginning, and then only seem to be able to skip 10 mins at a time etc.

I suspect this issue is tied to the forced transcoding. Have you tested if it also happens in Direct-Play ?

Best regards: dlanor

Sorry for the newbie question, but can anyone suggest any network performance testing tools (like iPerf) for RasPlex? I'm running 0.51 on a Pi2 and I'm getting pauses every 4-5 seconds, but the same videos play fine on the Roku right beside it.

(Sorry if this isn't the right place for this question - any direction to the right place would be appreciated.)

Having this same issue but only in regards of multipart movies. Resuming shows it wants to start in GUI, then only to start from the beginning....
