RasPlex RC4 Issues - Please Report feedback here

Thanks for being so patient everyone! We're pretty sure you'll agree it was worth the wait.

This is by far the most stable and performant version of RasPlex to date! We expect it will be our last "release candidate" for 0.4.0.

We're running off of the very latest PHT code, which brings in a long-awaited "PlayQueue" feature - enabling you to easily binge on seasons at a time. Please note that this is very new, and any bugs you find should be reporting to Plex, not us.

Here are our notable changes:

changes:
- Based on PHT 1.1.1
- Major improvement speed in Pre-Caching
- Caching Media sections which drastically improves loading time once cached
- New feature from PHT PlayQueues
- Playback capabilities improvement (stuttering pretty much eliminated).
- Exiting playback won't always terminate audio
- RasPlex time not beeing properly set according to region settings and DST
- Double subtitles showing when using transcoding
- Fixed playback randomly stopping after 5 minutes or so
- Better support for directplay with optional VC1 codec
- Various skin fixes.
- Fixed auto update looping issue.
- Rewrote auto update completely, now more reliable
- Added 250 MB swap by default to improve responsiveness / prevent crashing

Big thanks to LongChair for his leadership on this release and his awesome speed improvements, and to our Beta team for helping us test this release and come up with better processing for releasing stable code more often.

As always, report any bugs as according to tiny.cc/rasplex-bugs.
You can get the image from our RasPlex installer: https://github.com/RasPlex/rasplex-installer/releases or autoupdate to it.

Please note that autoupdate has been fixed in this version, and may not work properly with previous implementations, so a full reflash is the recommended way to install if you have issues.

Release is hosted at: https://github.com/RasPlex/RasPlex/releases

Enjoy!

On the info overlay, it shows network cache as 0 bytes, even when paused, is cache disabled or just not updating the overlay info?

- Exiting playback won’t always terminate audio

Is there any way to disable this? My girls are used to exiting to menu to stop the movie, now you have to stop/pause it first, and then exit. Also, returning to the movie running in the background is not possible from most of the menus. If some of this comes from PHT 1.1.1 please forgive my ignorance and please help me deal with it :)

Thanks for bringing out a new release - exciting! What I notice the most is the much improved precaching and memory management, that makes the navigation of large folders sp much more enjoyable.

I thought that entry was a "fix" for the issue. Ie, that audio should stop when exiting movie. This sometimes bugged out before? I never really had a lot of problems with it before, but now it just keeps playing/stuttering in the background.

Bugs so far:

Movies with AAC now have no sound?

Can't change language. Doesn't matter how many times I choose "English" and restart, it reverts back to Swedish. This is from the "preferences" menu...not the initial setup.  :(

So we should not use the autoupdate?
I have done it and I can't se any issues so far anyway.

I tried autoupdate with USB install and it did not work properly. Did a full reflash...

Is this AAC 5.1 or AAC stereo, I don't have problems playing either.

Default is English, I can change language, reboot and language sticks.

Suggest you reflash your SD card and/or USB stick.

If you have what you consider 'bugs' there is a procedure for reporting these, see release notes.

It was AAC stereo. I reflashed USB again and now it works with AAC. Weird. I still had problems with language settings. I reinstalled and chose Enlisgh durings initial setup, menu were still in Swedish - but when I chose English lang under preferences and restarted it finally saved, the 2nd time I did the procedure. That is a bug I might report later. :)

I didn't want to report the bugs until I saw more people with them.

Unfortunately this does come from 'upstream' PHT 1.1.1 as designed for PCs. It has to do with the new PlayQueue stuff, with the Plex Devs feeling it is a good idea for all media to continue playing when jumping to the main menu. I and many others strongly disagree, but we have zero influence on this (as yet). There is at present no way to disable this feature.

If you have a USB keyboard you can press the 'Tab' key to get back into the video (or audio) playback screen.

This command should always work in the main menu, though I haven't tried it in others.

You can also press 'X' or media keys for 'Stop' (if present on that keyboard) to terminate playback without reopening the playback screen.

This command should work in all menus.

If you only have a remote control, then there may or may not be similar key functionality mapped for it.

I use a tiny USB keyboard myself, so that's all I can give detailed advice for.

Did auto update. No problems so far!

As stated in another post of mine, this is part of the new 'PlayQueue' feature in PHT 1.1.1. Like all original PHT features it has just been ported into RasPlex without major changes. So for this to be changed people need to complain to Plex staff in the subforums for "Plex Home Theater".

You can easily stop playback with the 'X' key (or media 'Stop' key) of a USB keyboard, or get back to the playback screen by using the 'Tab' key. Similar button mapping for remote controls is also possible, but since I don't use any such I can't give advice on the details of it.

Is that ALL sound using AAC codec, or is it some specific track setup (like 5.1 etc) ?
I only have normal 2.0 stereo, and for me AAC sound works fine. (but obviously downmixed to stereo)

Edit: Nevermind. I just read your other post where this was resolved.

That is extremely odd. I am Swedish myself and always set the timezone country properly to Sweden so as to get correct timezone.
But since I need to discuss program features with native English speakers and others in these forums I always set the language to English.
(This also limits the general location option, so I have to use "Central Europe" for that one, so as to allow choice of Sweden for timezone)
This has never failed for me...

There is also a setting in the "System Settings" menu (formerly "RasPlex Settings") which is of interest if you use a USB keyboard like I do, as it allows you to choose a Swedish keyboard layout ("sv-latin1").

One possible cause of your problem is that you may have misunderstood how a language change works for RasPlex.
While you manipulate the language 'chooser' no real changes are made, but as soon as you try to move the menu cursor away from that entry the chosen language begins to be activated, which is a SLOW process. During this process RasPlex appears to be frozen, responding to no commands, but when the language change is complete (well almost complete) it will again respond to input. But if you forcibly restart the RPi during this seeming 'freeze', then the language change is never completed and RasPlex will most likely start up in the same language as before.

So the correct procedure is to make your choice, move the cursor away from it (not immediately visibly moving), and then wait for the language change to complete (almost). And if you thereafter navigate to the Shutdown or Restart command and use either one, then the new language choice will be the active on on your next RasPlex boot.

As for my use of the word 'Almost' above, there are several different vocabulary 'sections' for this program (any localized program really).
Some parts of the RasPlex vocabulary haven't been localized at all yet, and will (as yet) always use English words.
Some other parts are implemented differently by Plex staff, and may not update at once after a change, but do so after a restart.
There may be some other variations too (I may have missed some as I mostly use the program in English).

Just to make doubly sure that I wouldn't mislead you on this topic I made a number of language switches for RasPlex on my own RPi while writing this post, changing from English to German, then German to Swedish, and finally Swedish to English, each time making a restart after each language change to confirm that the change had 'bitten' permanently. So if you follow the guide above it should work for you as well.

Updated from rc3 to rc4 last night using the System tab, no issues there and everything seems to have updated fine.

AAC works fine, I already precached everything a few weeks back so the menus are nice and zippy, and most importantly I have noticed absolutely no audio blips on playback this morning. I used to get this audio blip every couple of minutes, barely noticeable unless there was music playing. Changing power source, changing overclocking settings, changing SD cards etc had no impact. RC4 fixes all of that! No blips with any formats on any of the media that has been playing this morning. Kudos to the devs!

On another note, I still find the Filter handling in PHT to be the most cumbersome and inefficient method of doing so of any of the platforms. In genres alone there are hundreds of entries and I can't even page down on a keyboard or remote to find the genre I want. There was a lot to be said for the old method of browsing filters, especially on lower powered devices. Thankfully there are other skins such as Simplex and Amber that allow you to use the old Filter selection methods. Obviously this is a criticism of PHT and the Plex skin, and not of the excellent work completed on Rasplex.

Some movies have really low volume have to crank the amplifier to maximum and its still low. is there a way to increase volume past 0.0 db? after reading i think i might try the magic reflash.

Awesome work. Did a automatic update and it worked seamlessly - running off USB. Thanks!

Hello, great release, everything is really fast and it makes the raspeberry the (almost) perfect client for PHT.

I still have some minor problems here :

1) The categories "TV Shows", "Movies" and "Channel" keep disapearring/reappearingfrom PHT main screen, I think it might be related to some network connexions drop? I have never had this kind of problems with previous releases so it might be induced with rc4?

2) I noticed the cache is always at 0 in the information OSD while playing, is this normal?

3) When my server (macbook pro) is connected over wifi, I can play a TV show without stuterring or interuptions for almost 10 minutes and after that the video just freeze and I need to reboot the pi. If my server is connected over ethernet, everything plays seamlessly. Maybe it is related to my problem number 2?

4) On my remote the menu key that is set to make the play/pause/forward/backward/settings/subtitles OSD appear during playback sometimes causes the video to quit.

EDIT : it appears to be an issue induced by the PHT 1.1.0 release so i guess we will have to wait for a fix from the plex team.

5) Same issue as ccomly

By the way, I did a full reflash and I am running rasplex from a 2go USB flash drive.

Your problem seems to be 3.  Keep your server connected via ethernet, WiFi is unreliable for streaming services.  That would probably solve your first issue too.

Yes, the cache value should stay at 0 since LongChair is using other code to read the stream now, I don't know the exact details though.

For issue 5, are you running the audio in passthrough to an AMP/Receiver or using the Pi to decode the audio?

My first issue happens regardless of wether the server is connected over ethernet or wifi.

And about issue number 3, the thing is I can stream from my server to other macbooks (both connected over wifi) without troubles so it appears that this issue is part of rasplex, right? (moreover the pi is connected over ethernet)

For issue n°5, my pi outputs audio through analog.

Trying autoupdate but it is stuck at downloading 0%

Edit: Resolved via several restarts :)

I may have found a bug. This will take a minute to explain, so please bear with me. There are several computers, including three running Rasplex, connected to my Plex server. One of the Rasplex units has a wireless connection (yes, I understand why this is not a good idea, but the war department has said there will be no cables run in our bedroom.).

In the past, I have prepared the SDHC card for the wireless unit with the latest release (or release code), and installed it on a Rasplex that has a wired connection. Precache was done there for speed. That unit would immediately recognize that there was a wired connection, and all was well.

I would then install the card in the wireless unit, and change the LAN source to the wireless device. Everything went swimmingly.

Guess what? Unless I'm very mistaken, RC4 won't let me change to the wireless interface. That is, once it has decided the interface is hard wired, it doesn't seem to want to switch over to the wireless connection.

I do not have both connections present at the same time. The unit on which I did the initial installation has no wireless interface present, and the unit with the wireless interface has no wired connection.

issue 5, 3.5mm jack to a pair of logitech speakers+sub with a volume/sub ■■■. analog aswell then i guess? 2.1.

other probably non related issues iv found,  video stutter/lag makes audio out of sync or video out of sync i guess is more accurate, and a tv series with no audio at all.

I've been using it for a couple of days now and I'm impressed. I'll be back if I encounter any issues, but for now it seems to be working well.
