RE: Installation & Setup of Plex Media Server on Synology

I have been struggling with setting the Latest plex 64-bit Intel synology packgae on my NAS. The problem was that when I went to Plex via my browser it would not show me the server setup page but just ask me to login and then tell me I have no media.

My issue was that I was browsing to the internal hostname of my NAS: http://nas:5000 and http://nas:32400/web/

After 5 reintall attempts I started logging on to http://192.168.2.2:5000 and http://192.168.2.2:32400/web/ and BOOM problem solved. While the guide by @ChuckPA is excellent (Installation & Setup of Plex Media Server on Synology) tells you to be on the same internal network and not use a DDNS, it doesn’t explicitly state to look at the Synology internal IP and browse to it. Might be a good addition to this guide.

In any case I am happy to resolve my issue and I hope my contribution could help others as well.

@BobSnot

How can I word that better?

Thanks for responding @ChuckPa ! So here’s the thing, I was reading it top to bottom and I was already logged on to DSM because of the other configuration steps for the shares. So I skipped the part about opening a browser for install Plex on DSM.

If you could put the part quoted by @BobSnot at the top of the instructions, new users will start the guide correctly straight away. Perhaps add 2c. Do not use the hostname of the Synology to ever connect to Plex, always use the IP address.

I have even found that now after installation, Plex will not run properly by going to the hostname of the Synology on the internal network.

So thank you for the guide, it really helped me get it set up. Thank you for bearing with me on what was obviously a RTFM mistake, and thanks for being open to feedback!

@BobSnot wasn’t suggesting that you word it better; they were quoting the OP and the section where it was already worded adequately. Not that they need defending, just saying.

RIF.

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn’t sure. I hope I didn’t sound defensive as was not my intent.

I will gladly improve any wording which needs clarifying further.
