I haven’t been able to access my movies and music for almost a year now. The problem started with the upgrade to DSM 7.1.1. So today I downloaded the Plex Media Server app to my Mac Mini running Sonoma 14.2.1. I had already uninstalled the Plex Media Server package from my DS416j. Attempting a fresh, clean install. I need some assistance with the recommended method to re-install the Plex package for DSM 7.1.1 and how to get Plex to see all my media content. TIA
Do you know what version of Plex was installed on the NAS?
Do you have an existing server on the NAS you want to save, or do you want to start from scratch?
If the former, is the Plex Data Folder (database, etc), in the /plex or /plexmediaserver shared folder?
The reason for the questions is that Synology forced a lot of changes between DSM 6 and DSM 7.
There is one procedure of you had a working server on DSM 6 and it no longer works after you moved to DSM 7. If the /Plex shared folder exists and contains the database, then it is possible to recover the old server. See FAQ 27 - Migrating an existing PMS from DSM 6 to DSM 7. You need to give system internal user PlexMediaServer full control of the /Plex shared folder and at least read only access to the media files.
If the Plex server existed only on a DSM 7 system, then it is a different procedure. See FAQ 29 - DSM 7 - Give PlexMediaServer access to your media.
I deleted everything on my NAS, so I guess I have no choice than to start from scratch. All I have done thus far is to download and install the Plex Media Server on my Mac Mini computer. I did the original installation so long ago I forget what I did. Everything quit working when I migrated from DSM 6 to 7.
In DSM 7, Plex Media Server runs under a new user, PlexMediaServer, instead of Plex. Also, PlexMediaServer is a System Internal User, a new user type Synology added in DSM 7.
Also, the Plex Data Folder is now /PlexMediaServer instead of /Plex.
Since you’ve already installed PMS on the system after updating to DSM 7, the PlexMediaServer user already exists.
If the /PlexMediaServer shared folder still exists, delete any contents. It needs to be empty.
Give user PlexMediaServer at least read only access to your media files. See FAQ29.
Install Plex Media Server on the NAS. It is OK to use the version in Synology Package Center.
You can upgrade later if desired.
When installing, choose the Plex Claim Token option. It successful, you will see a message saying “Plex Media Server successfully claimed by username” (or something very similar).
Login to the Plex server using the IP address of the NAS. For example, if the IP address is 10.1.2.3, use http://10.1.2.3:32400/web.
You should be able to access server settings, create libraries, etc.
After initial access via IP address, you can access via https://app.plex.tv/desktop, etc.
Not sure about “Failed to repair.” I’ve never seen that message before.
Regarding “Claim token not provided,” did you enter one when installing PMS?
Either way, the server is not claimed.
You can do so manually.
From a system on the same network as the NAS, point a private/incognito browser at the IP address of the server, http://syno_ip_address:32400/web (ex: if IP is 10.1.2.3, use http://10.1.2.3:32400/web).
Note: Use http, not https. Incognito is to bypass any browser extensions that might get in the way (cookie cutters, ad blockers, etc).
You should be able to login, reach the Plex Media Server settings, and claim the server.
Note: You must be on the same network as the server. Do not use the “Open” button in Package Center, Synology Quick Connect, a DDNS/FQDN name, etc. Those will not work when claiming a server. If you are remote from the NAS, you must use a SSH tunnel to claim the server. See Installation → Opening the Plex Web App on a Device Other than the Server Itself
I had managed to find instructions for installing using the Plex Claim Token. Once I did that correctly I was able to connect to Plex and add libraries. I think things are OK now. Thanks for your help.
