Issue: Plex (Version 1.12.2.4929; running on a Mac) is not generating episode thumbs for recorded TV episodes (screenshots); it has not generated any for all recorded TV.
The Episode images below where added by me, Episode 1 did pull a image from thetvdb (but i did not use it)
The image here was added by me; you’ll see that plex did not generate a screen shot.
Settings:

Can you provide the XML for episode 2?
Checking on TheTVDB, there isn’t an image for episode 2 yet, so there is nothing to download.
Or are you referring to the image it should take from the file itself? I don’t see those in your screenshots. Let me check if it should be doing that for recorded shows.

Pulling images from thetvdb is fine. I am referring to the image plex should take from the file itself. XML here:
drive.google.com/open?id=1IkEhJMEIdIxQ9sbh2YKUzIM8u9W7T0kQ
This is by no means unique to this show, many, many others do the same. Another few XMLs for which plex did not take an image from the file:
drive.google.com/open?id=1CfpMmz8qMkwDuT1W96hYfsXgnjE0MboW
drive.google.com/open?id=1GI2xa1vsQx4upvlwH_Se48ozLR1D32GJ
I see screengrabs on my recordings. Do you use the feature to remove commercials, or some other script. I don’t. Just wondering if maybe that is interfering with the scanner creating the screengrabs.
Can you try Plex Dancing one of these episode just to see if thumbnails show up when added this way? If not, provide me the scanner log.

Movies recorded by plex all have plex generated screengrabs. I removed an episode and did the plex dance and no screengrab was generated for this test file: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Gf-HwqrkpRAS0WBSbBqaOyzOdqXrYjSv
Logs: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1xi2DAPxsLKphdF-3ruLNVhkR7P2NomgH
What might explain this is that .ts files that plex generates from a recording don’t get screengrabs generated but .mkv do; episode 6 of ‘Classic Mary Berry’ is AVC inside MKV that I created as plex missed recording that episode, so I added it myself. And plex successfully generated a screengrab for this episode. Here is the XML of that file: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1daVTsDH7SYpCHoMySYTH-L_RUDSyRMEk
So it looks like plex cannot generate screengrabs of .ts files it creates.
Ok, from you see, it’s just TV episodes in .ts format? I will test that.

Yes. Movies in .ts format are fine, and generate screengrab as expected. It’s just .ts episode files plex records from tv.
I have my recordings set to save as mkv, so that could be why I see the screen grabs. I’ll test this later and let you know what I find. Good catch if this is the issue.
@“MovieFan.Plex” What’s also interesting is that although it is not generating a screengrab for .ts episodes, it is producing video preview thumbnails.
Those are different processes so they can produce different results.
It’s working for me. I recorded a few tv episodes with transcoding off so I get a .ts file and I see the screen grabs. I double checked with TheTVDB to make sure the image was not from there.
I wonder if it might have something to do with the type of files your DVR receives. Can you provide me a sample and I’ll see if I get the same result.

Sure. I sent you a PM with the link to files.
I got the files and was able to recreate the issue on my end. However, in my logs, I saw that the scanner (which is what creates the screen grabs) does try to generate the image but runs into an error when reading the file. This happens with all 3 files. For my other .ts files, I do not get this error and I see the images. I am going to pass this along to our devs to take a look at the files you provided and see if there is something really wrong with your file or if we are doing something wrong reading the file.

This happens on all tv show recordings. I am recording UK telly. I do use hdhomerun, so everything supported by plex. I don’t do any processing on these files. Let’s hope this can be fixed. Thank you very much for all your help.

Not sure what the issue is yet. Still waiting to hear back. I know there are some fishy stuff that goes on with UK broadcasts that we fixed in the transcoder. May have missed doing the same for the scanner, if it’s possible.
