[RELEASE] OpenPHT 1.6.2

For the Fedora users out there, I have created packages for Fedora 24. I wish I could put them on my Copr, but I think they would violate some project rules. The link for download and further details is: http://www.orpiske.net/2016/09/openpht-builds-for-fedora/

PHT has stopped playing files with Dolby Digital Plus (EAC3) audio. Plex Media Player handles the files just fine, but I really want to continue to use PHT on my HTPC. Does OpenPHT handle EAC3 audio? I’ve avoided switching up to now, but I think I may have no choice at this point.

I have the same problem, OpenPHT 1.62 on Odroid C2 also doesn’t play any sound on mkv’s with Dolby Digital Plus (EAC3) audio.

You found a solution yet?

Also no new version or updates from NedtheNerd, or he is on holiday or abandoned the OpenPHT project?

Last I spoke with @NedtheNerd he was stepping back from the project briefly for some personal reasons. Maybe @Kwiboo or @dlanor can offer a note of confidence about the project’s health.

Thank you for the update.

Thanks for that info, I was starting to get concerned that @NedtheNerd had not been seen for a while.

OpenPHT for Windows is 32 bit only? Or am I just not seeing the 64 bit link

So is OpenPHT dead then?

32bit only. Works just fine on 64.

No, it isn’t …

Thanks @bkury. Can someone on the team update the github milestones to new estimated dates? Those are always good indicators of project health. Without someone in the forums performing some kind of community outreach, people start assuming the worst.

Well, it’s always hard to estimate release dates because we can only work on these projects in our spare time. So, pretty much everything in our life (actual job, family, other private stuff) can change these estimates and/or communication with you guys …

Still, the best way to follow development is to take a look at openpht’s network graph which gives you a better view of what’s going on:

Can OpenPHT be configured to direct stream videos from Plex channels as does the Roku? I was hoping not to have to purchase a Roku just to be able to watch the channels. Thanks!

This is a cool update graph. Thanks for pointing it out as a heart beat monitor.

I personally understand these dates are arbitrary guesses. I would offer that if you hope to have a release date by say Sept 1st and it doesn’t come together, you could just move the date. If anyone attempts to hold the team accountable for something like that, they don’t deserve the fruit of your labor anyway. But I think some of the projects more active peripheral supporters and especially donators should have some point on the horizon to look forward to, even if it’s in motion. But I’ll take a heartbeat monitor any day.

I want to take a momentary sidetrack and say I know most of the people in this forum really appreciate all the work you guys (and gals?) are doing. Personally, OpenPHT is such a strong client it’s allowed me to branch out my user base. Using other clients I had to limit my user base to a few individuals because of transcoding. But now with OpenPHT running strongly and affordably I’ve opened up my user base to 8 remote users and counting.

My user base is a little different as it’s mostly fully disabled people who I’m providing remote access to my library. The importance of in-house entertainment is greatly exacerbated when you can’t move, so I’d like to thank the team on behalf of them as well.

You folks have made some great stuff here and we appreciate it.

OpenPHT supports channels installed on the Plex Media Server. If you’re talking about Roku channels outside of Plex, you’re not going to be able to access them from OpenPHT.

Thank you, BenWolf. Yes, I was referring to channels installed on PMS. Most channels do work, like ABC, CBS, TheCW, PBS and Crackle, but a few American Network channels do not:

  1. FOX - Able to see content & info about episodes, but get the error “unable to play media” after selecting a stream. While installing the channel, I saw a note “Client must be able to play eHLS streams”.
    2. Freeform - Can see individual shows but cannot drill down any further. No clue why. While installing the channel, I saw a note, “This channel is compatible with Plex for Android, Plex for iOS, Plex for Roku and Plex/Web+Safari/Mac only!”

I’m pretty sure it’s not a channel issue because I can play them on the family’s ROKU. But I had wanted to watch them directly on my notebook.

Update - Freeform has a glitch. So it is only FOX which I cannot play, and I assume it has to do with encrypted HLS streams.

OpenPHT is amazing, and I am thankful for what I can play, so far. I was hoping to get past the ROKU restriction. The channel devs used to insert channel blocking code for incompatible clients, but that is no longer the case.

Any ideas about this? Thanks in advance!

Encrypted HLS streams have not ever been supported in PHT as far as I can tell. You could open a Github feature request which the team may or may not respond to.

I’m not sure how difficult it would be to implement and support. There may be some interesting DRM problems to overcome.

The last update wasn’t that long ago. Plus you guys cranked out a bunch as soon as PHT stopped being developed.
It’s awesome and works great.

you can actually see @Bkury’s dev work towards 1.7. Without diving in too deep, it looks like he’s been pretty active. There were a bunch of rasplex releases when the plex guys announced PHT was no longer being developed. OpenPHT 1.6 is stable, plays HEVC files without issue and is far slicker than PHT ever was (including Black and Aeon was an awesome touch). At this point, I’d only expect a couple updates a year unless there was a major bug. I love the rasplex team for saving us old school HTPC’s enthusiasts with such a sick client. We no longer represent the majority of the plex userbase.

Well, I’m just helping out with GUI/Skin stuff, the actual development is done in private by @kwiboo.

In general, I don’t think that 3 months without a public/stable release is that bad … this also happened with the official PHT client and they had full-time employees working on it. So, please keep that in mind before posting something like “Is openpht dead?”

OpenPHT development progress will always vary depending on how much spare time people working on this project have.

Your work is much appreciated. That graph is pretty neat. I can understand how someone may have thought it was dead due to the good work & frequent updates that we got accustomed to. Don’t let that take away from the plusses though. You’re helping where Plex ditched us. Again… Your work is much appreciated.

Can you please provide a guide on how to get this working ?

I wanted to triple boot this into Mac Mini with OSX + Ubuntu + OpenPHT.

But the build provided is a OpenPHT image file. I did a dd into a partition already, but am unable to modify grub to work with it.

All documents point towards modifying grub when the release has separate Kernel and System files, which are not provided.

PS: Would the generic release work with Legacy Nvidia (320M) ? If not is it possible to modify it so that it does ?
