I have tried this method and I still cannot get my metadata to stop loading on my PC. I have a NAS drive im loading music from, but my PC storage is quickly being eaten up by metadata. I used Plex years ago and it was easy to change the directory (I understand that feature was removed). Does anyone have any more advice? I have been working at this for hours and nothing seems to work.
What is now in the registry key LocalAppDataPath ?
Are you running Plex Server as a system service?
What kind of drive are you (intending to) using for the plex data folder? (you cannot use the NAS!)
Thank you for your reply,
Are you running Plex Server as a system service? I dont know, sorry!
What kind of drive are you (intending to) using for the plex data folder? (you cannot use the NAS! Im using the Synology DS218+ NAS drive.
Are you saying that when metadata is being downloaded it cant be on the NAS drive?
I appreciate your help!
Then you don’t ![]()
Where is your Plex server installed and running?
If it’s on Windows, then you must have a drive connected directly to the Windows machine. You cannot use the NAS drive for the Plex data.
This is covered already in the original writeup above.
(The NAS is good for holding your media files)
I did follow the directions above, but probably screwed that up. I have plex installed on my NAS and its been updated…
I dont care if I loose my current metadata, just need it to take up space on my NAS not my PC.
Then these instruction have nothing to do with your Plex Server. Your NAS is (very likely) not running Windows and doesn’t have a registry.
Ok, Any idea to fix that issue?
Ill look into that now ![]()
I have no idea about even what type your NAS is. I don’t know my way around NAS’s in general and this thread is specifically about Plex on Windows.
Thank you for your help this far!
You can setup Plex as an App on your NAS. I’ve not used a Synology NAS before, but if it’s the same as others (it should be, Synology is a very supported brand) there should be a Plex App in the Synology App Store. Goto your web browser & type the address for the NAS (Something like 192.168.0.54) & in the settings there should be an “Apps” Icon or Tab. If Plex is running on the NAS it can store the Metadata there. Just note that transcoding is not ideal on a NAS because they generally have minimal processors & RAM
I have moved these posts into a separate thread, because they have nothing to do with the original thread’s topic.
So your server is now running on a Synology NAS. And you want to release the hard drive space which apparently is still occupied from when you used to run Plex Server on Windows.
Did I interpret this correctly so far?
If that is the case, then perform the “thorough” uninstallation procedure on your Windows computer: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/
I’m pretty sure what they are saying is that the FILES are on a NAS, but the SERVER is running on Windows (I did this with an old ZyXEL NAS that didn’t have a Plex Server). They obviously don’t know too much about these things, Not everyone here has a lot of computer knowledge. I don’t think they understand the differences. When reading their posts I don’t think they realize there’s a difference between the Media Library & the Metadata. Things like “data folder” are just going to lead to confusion.
What they need to do is install the server on the NAS, THEN do the uninstall. But imagine you’re giving instructions to someone who has probably never edited a registry or used a terminal command line before

To connect to my NAS im using https://( fill in the blank ).quickconnect.cn/

I have the Plex app on my NAS, but when I click open it says “sorry, cant load the page”. Due to that reason I have to open plex through a web browser manually. This may be why the metadata is being loaded on my PC.
How do I know what my " 192.168.0.54 " is?
Very true,
I am not a tech guy, just a movie lover
I used to run Plex for years on my PC with no issues. Since I upgraded to a NAS drive its been a much larger learning curve.
If it’s storing ANY data on your PC the server isn’t actually running ON the NAS drive. What you are probalby doing is running the SERVER on your PC, then, from your PC you are getting the Movie files from the NAS.
Try this for me. Turn off the PC that you are having issues with. Completely power down. I’d even suggest unplugging it just to be sure. Then try to play something on Plex from your TV, Roku, Firestick, Phone, whatever. Let me know if it plays
Hello,
I think you may be right. 20min ago I uninstalled all Plex info in my laptop. I did what you recommended and Plex would not load any of my content. Im guessing this means you were right and my PC was my server and NOT my NAS.
Any tips how to correct this?
When I try to open plex media server on my NAS it says “sorry, this package cannot be accessed when connected via QuickConnect”
How else can I connect?
You have to go into your NAS interface. Ideally by the IP Address (192.168.0.## or the like)
Give me a minute, I’ll see if I can find a guide for Synology
