Remember Selected tab not working

One of the latest updates broke Plex for Roku devices for me. Now the tabs on TV Shows and Movies will not remember their setting. No matter which you choose (Recommended-Library-Categories) if you leave the area and come back its defaulted to Recommended. It doesn’t remember your setting like before. Also closing the app and re-opening the app you are now ALWAYS greeted with the “Customize Navigation” screen. The Roku Plex app No longer remembers ANYTHING. Been like this for a while now so I guess nobody even notices it. What a shame! Plex could be an awesome app if anyone ever cared to stop by these forums and read what customers are saying. Oh well I guess thats business in 2023.

Not remembering all the configurations is obviously a major issue. It’s kind of silly to assume it was intentional, especially since the forums would be overrun with complaints. Mine, for instance, still works as expected.

It might be more productive to provide the version of the Roku app you have, so maybe someone can provide some help.

My Roku apps have been working fine so it’s not necessarily a widespread issue.

One thing I’ve noticed with Roku is that it gets a little too “clingy” about settings and caching. I’ve found that I have occasional bugs that don’t clear unless I remove the power cable entirely. Pulling power entirely for a few moments has resolved a few bugs that reboot\restart alone didn’t fix.

As mentioned above it would be good to know your specific Roku model and logs after changing the setting and it not working.

@Beckfield Who said it was intentional?!? Sure, I wasn’t aware there were more than 1 roku app. 7.9 build 3 on a RokuTV.

@BugWheel What setting? No settings have changed. Just after one of the last updates the bug started, been over a month and Im not sure if more roku updates have been pushed but its still an issue. Every app launch you get the “Customize Navigation” screen, ever time you switch between TV Shows and Movies the selected tab resets itself back to recommended.

There isn’t more than one Roku app but all Roku devices are different and have different capabilities and quirks. Which model Roku TV?

the Remember Selected tab setting is what I was referring to but if it is starting with Customize Navigation screen every time then it sounds like the memory on device is corrupt somehow and not saving things. If it was a general app issue with update then as mentioned by others lots of folks using Roku would likely experience the same thing.

I personally would uninstall and reinstall first to see if it resolves it. If not it would be good to see the Roku logs so we can see if there are any errors when saving settings.

I have reinstalled it multiple times over the month or so its been like this. TCL model 32S327.

Ok. Assuming you do not have any addition preview or beta version of the app installed can you pleae after uninstalling reboot the TV ( you may have to unplug it and plug it back in) before reinstalling.

Just to note … I’ve re-installed in the past and it didn’t fix a display bug I was experiencing in Plex until I unplugged the Roku so if you haven’t already … definitely try it. At the very least it’ll check one of the troubleshooting boxes to move on to other things.

The TVs are more finicky than the dedicated boxes too (I have multiples of both).

Next step

I have a tcl roku tv set, and while not the same specific model as yours, it normally works fine.

It has however on occasion had weird glitches, not just with plex.

A hard power cycle has fixed those random issues, most of the time. A couple times I have had to remove the app, hard power cycle, reinstall app, for it to work normally.

I am also dreading the day when the internal flash storage runs out of write blocks and goes read only and bricks the whole thing.

So Its not the TV. I just put a roku stick in a Sceptre TV same app version and the exact same problem persist.

How are you closing the app? Are you just hitting the home button on the remote? Are you backing all the way out to the app menu and selecting one of the options (exit, sign out, switch user) there?

I just pulled out my old Roku Premiere (4620R) and let it update the Roku software version and the Plex channel (7.9.3). I’m unable to reproduce the problems you’re experiencing.

Given that you’re seeing these problems on multiple devices and none of the respondents to this thread are, it’s possible we just don’t understand the exact steps you’re taking to induce them.

Just go home, hit the * button, restart app, and viola same “Customize Navigation” screen every time.

While you got you app out, go ahead and try going from source to source, changing the tab to say LIBRARY, then going to a new source and come back. For BOTH my rokus they default back to RECOMMENDED. Ive had my rokus set up for years and this is newish behavior (1-3 months).

Not in my case. If I’m in the Plex app, hit home, hit * on the Plex app and select restart app, it restarts it and takes me straight to my home screen; no forced “customize navigation.”

I should have stated it more clearly above, but I don’t experience this problem either.

Is the “Remember Selected Tab” setting still enabled if you go back to settings? Is it somehow being reset? Do you have it set to automatically sign-in as well? Is that being remembered?

Well it is in mine, I’ll make a video of both, stay tuned and I’ll upload soon.

I will admit I now realize I was doing an extra step and not mentioning it here, I apologize, I simply forgot, but now I know exactly how to trigger the failure. I even see the Plex app exit in an abnormal manner. Sort of like a freeze and fade out… You’ll see in the video soon enough…

As promised! This was done on my Sceptre with a roku stick.

The first video is me simply changing the home page sources and after an app restart its back to the “customize navigation” screen. Cannot change anything, app will default itself.

The second video is trying to select my favorite view option for TV shows and Movies, unfortunately that too resets to default every refresh. Not something Plex has EVER done.

The exact same failures can also be triggered on my TCL with the same Roku app.

Its the app!

Now since I went through all this trouble can we get this fixed please?

Still broken

We have been trying to reproduce but cannot.
Can you please

  1. Open the Plex channel
  2. Press Home 5x and Back 5x in quick succession, to generate a ticket on Roku’s side
  3. Reply back with a screenshot of the “Issue Report Tracker” displayed on screen

We can send that info to Roku to have them investigate the device-level issue with saving settings to the Roku registry.

Another thing to try if you are willing. Sign-in with a new Plex account. It won’t have any servers attached to it, but you should be able to see if the settings are saved. Which may indicate there is something specific on the account that is causing issues.

  1. Create a new Plex account (don’t sign in to any servers with it, keep it clean)
  2. Sign out of the Roku, and sign in with the new account
  3. Change a couple settings; in General change the clock to off
  4. Close the channel
  5. Press * while focused on the channel, and choose “Restart app”
  6. Go to the settings, and see if the clock is still off

Thank you! On it!
