This whole new experience is completely broken. I can’t flip libraries quickly, most of my customization is gone, and it’s just not remotely intuitive to navigate. This is one of the worse UI releases I have witnessed and the feedback here should tell you as much. I’m searching for a new player for my library as I don’t have a way to roll this back. Listen to your users… this was a very bad mistake.
Oh I’m sure they will soon.
We will definitely hear any business acquisition news via TechCrunch, Yahoo Finance, Crunchbase, and The Verge. I’d keep your eyes peeled for any new developments on the executive and acquisition level.
“You’ll EAT that **** sandwich we gave you, and you’ll LIKE IT!”
No. It’s more along the lines of Apple (Steve Jobs/Tim Cook)
“And we think you’re going to LOVE IT”
but then reality sets in.
It pairs perfectly with my personal Apple tagline, “Why would you want to do that?” (Heavy sarcasm)
I’ve been keeping my eyes on it. Can’t figure out who the would be buyer is yet. Been following the big decision makers social media, like LinkedIn. Also blog posts. Then been reading sec filings of major competitors as well. Trying to see if I can find any nod or tell, big movement in a certain direction or some “forward looking statements” that might hint at it. But I haven’t found anything definitive yet. Just a lot of theories.
Even have a list of people I’m keeping my eyes on. See if someone from one company switches to another to help the handoff of such an aquisition months prior to it.
I’m really interested in trying to see if I can find that one smoking gun that’ll let me predict it months before any official announcements.
At the very least figuring out that they’re being sold is easy enough. Just look at Plex’s staff page and notice how all their bios talk about aquisition, then go onto archive.org and look at the same page from the past, you’ll see how hard they shifted their position.
My thoughts exactly. It was doing everything we wanted, now it does everything we don’t want…
If it’s not broken, why go and break it? Sheesh…
Version 8.6 build 7
Roku Ultra and Express 4k
App still completely locks up and becomes non-responsive while browsing libraries if navigating too quickly. Have to exit to Roku home with home button and restart.
Seems like this should have been dealt with by now.
Just released THIS MORNING ( 1min 50sec video)
One other thing I notice is missing in the new experience. For one of my users, they don’t like to navigate through my libraries to find the content I’ve shared with them – so rather than sharing the library, I’ve shared individual items. Previously they had a button on the Roku app that just said “Media” and it was basically a list that contained all of the exact items shared to them in one convenient place.
That button seems to have been removed – they do still seem to have access to the items via the Search option but that’s obviously less convenient than a one stop screen for all of the content they view regularly.
Any chance we could get that button back somewhere in the interface? Thanks!
Cory Doctorow calls this “ensh**tification.”
Playlists can’t be shared with the Guest account, though.
They can be recreated under that account, but that’s a fools game.
Seems there is an issue with button presses in the screenshot, clearly missing two more down arrow presses.
Thanks for the link. At the very least it’s clear that Plex does not consider itself a self hosting platform anymore. They always go out of their way to ignore that side of the business in anything they talk about.
If you based all you knew about Plex on their statements and interviews you’d never know that Plex even allowed self hosted media.
Just hate it when they mess things that were working good. That new UI is a pain to navigate. They did the same thing few years back and I was ready to jump out of that sinking ship till they agreed to give the choice between the new release and the classic one. I guess they didn’t learn that people spend time to set up their libraries the way they want to access them and don’t like to redo everything with added push buttons and difficult library access. PLus I got bugs with “unavailable content” on medias that are still sitting on my drives. Well let’s see if they are customers oriented…
Update 9/28: This problem is only occurring in the latest beta release (v.1.43.0.10162-b67a664b6), it’s working ok in the last stable version (v.1.42.2.10156-f737b826c).
Seeing a new problem with the latest release on the Roku app (Roku Ultra). All of the sudden none of my MPEG-2 files will play unless they are inside of an MKV container. I get a general “Playback has stopped due to multiple playback errors” on load and these errors/warnings in the console. This is the case with both direct play and transcoding.

Agreed… the new UI is NOT user friendly. Please allow option for which interface to use.
