Things that have helped (learned through forums/ reddit).
Not sure why there aren’t instructions provided by Plex with a major change like this.
On the Roku app:
Settings (gear icon) Experience
Change Default Library View to your preference
Enable Spring Loading (uncheck)
On the Library Bar, pressing the asterisk button opens options (like Rescan)
On the Plex Server
Settings→Online Media Sources
Set all to disable
(this also disables search results for items that you don’t have, which I kind of liked) but the experience in the clients is so much better.
There are still feature bugs/ issues as reported. Hopefully those get ironed out.
I still don’t think the change was worth it. Having to relearn/ retrain muscle memory navigating the app is hard for me and I deal with tech all the time. When I want to relax, the last thing I need is to relearn my entertainment solution.
Since you mentioned folders. When you’re in a Library view you can click on Movies and choose Folders. If you’re files are actually organized in folders, this might be useful.
This is confusing and I just recently learned the difference between home users and shared “friend” accounts.
With PlexPass and running a media server you get these settings. Disabled for managed accounts disables Plex Content for user profiles on your account. Disabled will disable the content for the admin account and user profiles. This works when you use the admin account to log into a device.
If you’re sharing your account with a free plex account. You’re screwed. I literally just tested w/ a TV and created a free account. On the Roku Client or web browser, you can log in and disable streaming services… but this changes nothing. You still see What’s On Now, What’s hot all the crap you don’t want. Not only that, you see Live TV, On Demand and Discover with no way to disable.
The online media sources you have with PlexPass/ media server isn’t an option with a free account. So this is an absolute powerplay to try and monetize streaming to free users.
All my users are Plex Home users. But different users, different wishes.
Again, they are only users of my PMS. How to configure different things for different users of mine? Even for me, I have different devices with differing use cases. I am logging in as a PMS admin (Plex Pass) user to all of these devices. How to configure different looks/features for different devices? They would not need to be disabled… just hidden or not pominently placed in my face.
I can’t see it.
I know that with the New Experience, nobody thought of this. Other things were more important, obviously. But I don’t care. Plex Home is there for a reason.
Before NE: Each Plex player app could be configured to view or hide libraries / certain Plex features. If a user used an app the first time, that configuration automatically popped up.
With NE: Certain users/user types can or cannot configure a view on their devices. Most of these views/sortings are not configurable any longer. Features can be switched off, but in my case, only I can do that (or any (paying?) plex user in other cases?).
I would be fine if I really would be able to configure devices’ views centrally (I have a list of devices using my server showing up in Plex Web, after all). My feeling is: switching features on or off - not on a user level but system-wide or on user-type level - should be a different matter than configuring an app view.
Thank you for taking that into account, Plex staff.
Have you tried logging into the browser with your admin, then switch user, then try unpinning items from the menu there and finding other customizations and see if that effects the Roku app?
I haven’t tried/ don’t have user profiles. Would be interested to see if that works.
Thank you. Do you have a Plex quote to support that thesis? Because it’s working no matter where you are in the world. She’s living 6 months a year in another country. What is the usability aspect of this? What are the security issues that may arise?
Plus… thematically, this is totally irrelevant. It would be the same problem, if my mother would live in the same household.
Well, this is not true. With all the current apps apart from NE, it’s working and is supported. With Plex Web, this is supported, too. The NE does not support it currently.
Regarding user-based settings: That’s what I am asking for… a per (home) user configuration of such things. Are home users supposed to not be normal humans with their own ways and interests? Strange…
Apart from that… the new ruling just does not make much sense from my point of view.
I actually have a use case for this. My daughter lives in Minnesota. She has her own Plex account. I have her added to my Home Screen which allows her access to the TV Tuners.
But I still don’t know why it should be a bad idea (this is not what the support articles say). My mom is my mom and she’s alone in her private home when she’s not at our home. Yes, the Plex admin account is logged in a FireTV device here and there. I don’t see the security issue. She’s not giving it to anybody. Nobody except herself is seeing this. That lady gave birth to me. If I don’t trust her, then I’ll be doomed.
Again, that is not helping to configure home user’s experience on devices. And that’s what’s been critized here. Let’s get back on-topic.
Why not put the Library/Playlist navigation back on the left again? We’re all using widescreens to view this content. Not only is it easier to click to it, it’s also a better use of space. The change to making it all horizontal across the top of the screen is distinctly less useful. Apologies if this has already been addressed in the past couple weeks since this post but it bears re-iterating if it hasn’t been yet. This is a BAD change to the previous functionality.
I have been a plex pass user since 2015. This has got to be the WORST UI on the roku ive ever experienced. My young children were able to use plex easy before. Now even they are saying they cant find things to watch and hand me the remote. You guys have to listen to your customer base and fix this ASAP! Have any of you ever heard the saying if it aint broke dont fix it!
Bug: The server name is not displayed for some profiles when viewing the library list
With this new UI change, there appears to be a bug in the way the libraries are displayed for users that have libraries spread across multiple servers. The user name of the owner of the particular server instead of the server name is displayed. This causes a lot of confusion when libraries are provided by multiple servers.
This change caused my mother to have a melt down when she tried to find the shows related to the server located at her apartment. I was able to calm her down by pointing out that the previous library order was preserved, and that her server libraries were still listed first. But, this issue needs to be fixed for those of us that run multiple servers claimed by the same account.
Here is an example of the issue. Below “SunCat” is the owner of the servers in question and not the server name. This makes for a very ambiguous list when Movies and TV Shows content is hosted from multiple servers.
Not a fan of the new UI at all. I bought Plex Pass a few years back because it was straight forward and not complicated, like a TV back in the day. Some people want it simple and other can choose to make it complicated. Maybe do an expert mode for them and leave a “normal” version for us simple people. It works but it seems so unorganized compared to the old version. Like someone threw everything in a box and shook it up only to let things lie where they may. It was so easy before and now it’s all over the place. Can there be an option to let us decide if we want to use the old or new UI? Maybe when we set it up locally we could choose?
Don’t want to listen to your customer base? Don’t want to let’s us use the old CLASSIC app?…Not going to change back after 1000’s of complaints?….Fine!!….after being with you since 2021 and paying for a “Lifetime Pass” and spending months setting up my libraries…you can now kiss my ass goodbye! You are NOW going to get the Bud Light and Cracker Barrel treatment. Go WOKE…Go Broke!. Oh…and by the way….I want my money back and I will definitely be reporting you to the BBB.
