Roku New Experience Release Update

Theme music is on the roadmap but will be lowest priority at this point.

100%. I was going to include that point but decided against as I was worried my post would become to long and get lost.

The more libraries you have the worse it gets. In the old design you could pin them to the left and it was easy to get to, not so much now.

Long time plex supporter here
I don’t come on here to complain much, which should show how big of a deal this is. The new UI is awful. The fact your senior leadership team would decide to roll this out without giving the consumer any options completely blows my mind.

I’ve had your back this whole time people have been talking bad the past 2yr+ of the choices that get made, but digging heels in saying we’re offering customers NO options draws the line for me. Absolutely no consideration for their customers - horrible consumer experience because of unprofessional business practices.

@Jprez420 I have been running this past some of the Roku team and it does look like some Roku devices on OS version 15 are having issues with 4k content playback. Which this coincidentally started for you when the new UI update landed on your device, we do have confirmed reports of at least very similar occurrences on the previous (aka old UI) client version. We have started a thread here to try and collect more information and help get this addressed.

”We are still evaluating this broad response” its not exactly broad when I cannot find users/customers praising the change. If the ‘evaluation’ is still underway then how was “we aren’t planning on rolling back” ruled out?

If users are saying this is a experience downgrade, the Plex response is “Stuff it, we can out patch the negativity”. Like why? Why should I wait for Plex to discover and reinvent what I they previously liked.

Also UI is like a joke if you need to explain it, it is not very good.
(Plex makes a post explaining that the customer is just using it wrong)

@McWanke , you do know there are more people here than just @Jprez420 don’t you? And most of those other customers have many of the same valid grievances?

Please address the ridiculously large pink elephant in the room.

I’m not having any navigation or display issues. Things are working well enough for me. But that isn’t the issue. Everyone I JUST got to start using Plex is now spinning their heads trying to figure out how to navigate this unintuitive and inconsistent new UI. Not rolling it back? Cool. It’s still nonsensical garbage. See, you’re not just catering to jerks like me who can figure out a UI and who have the ability to get a better device if need be. All of my other users, who I convinced to join this service, count too. And if they don’t want to have to relearn a UI that is bafflingly unlike any other UI for streaming in that nothing is placed for easy use, then what purpose is there to my paying for Plex pass? I got it for those people, and now I’m caught between trying my hardest to bring them around and troubleshoot their issues, and just being told they’re not gonna use it anymore because defaulting to their preferred streaming services is less annoying. So cool don’t roll it back to something that was already working perfectly, but you’re shooting us both in the foot by leaving it in this messy state.

Yes!!! My elderly parents are heavy users of my Plex server — I even have all their decades of home movies available there — but are struggling deeply with this UI. It’s incredibly unintuitive and they’re just giving up instead of figuring it out.

heck, i remember when philips hue rolled out there new app. they got so much backlash that they actually did just that. kept the old one out but only fixing security bugs but also developed the new app seperately. eventually the new app did come to parity w/the old, legacy one and people finally moved over.

a company admitting it made a mistake is a good thing in 2025
. humility = perhaps we can trust plex going forward.

however our thoughts and opinions on the UI have fallen on deaf ears, even in the preview programs.

agreed on this 100%. i was my caregiver for my mom and have several older relatives.. programmers, developers NEVER think of the older users. its very sad.

>You can restart your Plex app. From the main Roku screen hit the ‘ * ’ button

You can’t restart using the asterisk button if the asterisk button doesn’t work.

It’s nice that you posted something, but the whole tone of the article rubbed me the wrong way. And I don’t even use Roku.

To me it read as “we hear you don’t like the new UI, but good news! We know better!” Like you could at least acknowledge that a large proportion of users aren’t happy with the changes that literally no one asked for. Do you want to keep your pretty new UI you worked so hard on, or to retain customers? You guys need to start listening to your consumers and implementing changes that they have been asking for for a long time, not pushing buggy UIs that no one wants and axing features. This trajectory you guys are on is seriously concerning at best.

Like many here I had to come to air my disagreement with this update on Roku. I’m also a Plex Pass Subscriber but this update took my completely by surprise. The whole redesign of the UI is such a step backwards but yet for some reason you don’t seem to be listening to the vast majority of users who are telling you it’s a downgrade.

Please review your statement “at this time we aren’t planning on rolling back this update” and do the right thing and back-out the change of this update. Like many here I have a number of seniors in the house who are now struggling due to this change which has now increased their anxiety over a change to their system.

Please (I repeat) listen to your customers, admit you screwed up, do the right thing and change it. Don’t keep stating you’ll fix the bugs, the whole release was a bug so roll back and continue to work on better releases in the future.

Hoping you’ll come to your senses, though I doubt it. :frowning:

You’re so focused on trying to solve the problems created around your own personal choice of wanting to streamline across platforms that in the process you have totally disagreed what’s most important: Making sure your customers are happy with the experience they are paying and have paid you for. Those who invest in you and support your company.

If you’re really that dead set on changing the UI then I think taking a step back so we can all get back to our personal lives while you rethink your approach is the least you can do. And that starts with listening to what us customers have been telling you. This has taken up enough of our personal time and caused us enough trouble. Like where even was this documentation at the time of release? We were left to figure it out ourselves with bugs/glitches further confusing the situation.

McWankee: give us the option to go back to the old interface. Just because a developer thinks a function is cool, that doesn’t mean your customers actually want thirst functionality. Maybe ask us next time.

BUG REPORT:

if you go into an empty library from the “libraries” button at the top of the screen, the UI becomes unresponsive and you have to hit the home button on the roku remote to leave the app and reenter the app, which brings you back to the plex home screen. Are you aware of this bug? 8.6.4 roku app w/ 1.42.1.10060 PMS windows version on a streaming stick 4k running the latest roku OS version available.

Absolute disaster update, nothing works.

“We hear your feedback but we know better and therefore won’t listen to your feedback .”

That’s quite the middle finger to your customers.

I encourage people to start cancelling their subscriptions and ensuring the ad-supported content is turned off so this company can’t collect ad revenue either.

My senior aged parents can no longer navigate the app. They’ve lost quick access to the playlists I made for them. The library sections are buried under a menu and they are baffled why a company would hide things like this.

The disdain you have for your customers is astonishing.

Playlists - Playlists still exist! We saw a few reports that suggested that these had been removed. They were moved a bit (but not re-moved). These are now located in the library navigation, on the left side of the screen.

Well sure, they exist but they are much harder to find. Why don’t you just make “Playlists” a Library entry like it was in the old interface where it could be pinned in the left hand navigation pane (ie Vertical tabs, not the new hard to use horizontal tabs). If you did this and went back to vertical tabs, more people might be able to accept the new interface.
