Roku New Experience Release Update

I successfully recreated the image (Restart App) once, but it was unsuccessful in resolving the issue. I proceeded to restart the Plex app, uninstall and reinstall it, and also restarted the Roku device. This process has proven to be unnecessarily complex. I observed that the Plex app is now updated to Version 8.6 Build 5. Although I was able to log into the Plex app, I am unable to access the Plex server, receiving an “unavailable” message. The server, however, appears to be operational and is capable of providing data to PlexAmp.

It would have made sense to given the end user an option to use the new UI versus the old UI while you figure out all your bugs. We’re all beta testers that did not sign up to be beta testers.

Roll it back. We do not want this. It was fine before.

Embarrassing. The stupidity involved in this update is astounding. Simply embarrassing for anyone employed there, I feel sorry for the employees who weren’t directly involved, they’re getting grouped together with the children who pushed out this turd. What a shame, was a great platform.

Honestly, lets look at the big picture. Plex is moving away from their initial local content to content provider mode where they see much bigger $$$$$ and nothing more. Where they have no real chance competing with Netflix on the big screen, they think that they do have a better chance serving the younger crowd who watches the majority of their content on their cell phones. The problem there is that the small screen of a cell phone does not work well with the same layout that can be used on a much larger TV screen so they either need to have two separate UI development teams for the very different layouts or just create one UI for both. If it is decided to go with a single UI, which one do they go with.

As it can be seen, they decided on the singe UI model and because their business is moving to content provider mode, they went where they believe the bigger money is, the cell phone / tablet interface. If you really look at the pile of trash that was released for the Roku, it is obvious that it is a poor adaptation of the small screen, drill down version and where, despite the bugs, it may work ok with the touch screen of a cell phone or tablet, it is really poor when attempting to use a remote so for all of the people that cannot understand why they would release such a horribly designed interface for the Roku, this is the reason. Sadly, us older local content users don’t make them as much money as they might like and if you are a cursed local user with the lifetime Plex Pass, then you have no value to them at all so losing you is no big deal at all and in some ways, an advantage. They have made it clear that we mean nothing to them and have no intention of changing anything for us and that is simply what it is.

Yeah maybe. Should still be an option to revert.

That is not as easy to do as you might think.

Never said it was.

Didn’t say that you did but they have made it clear that no effort of any kind will be made for us and reverting back may require some serious effort and offering an option to choose would.

Yep, I saw their statement at the top of this page.

This is a much “not” appreciated UI update that provides a very negative user experience for Plex users…period. Besides all the oddities and “bugs”, why is it so hard to navigate to the basic library views without having to go through dozens of recommendation panels based on viewing history? If I click my “TV Shows” library, I should NOT have to wade through an absurd amount of curated panels just to see MY library! I know what I have on my server and I know what I want to get to. I do NOT want to see a recommendation of “Similar sitcoms” or “Continue Watching” when I’m trying to view my library.

Quality Control on this release was non-existent. You have a massive user-base that you completely left out on this one…and that’s on you. You can “stick to your guns” all you want, but all you’re doing is driving people away from your platform. I’ve been a paying Plex user for 10+ years and have a Lifetime Pass…and despite my old-man stubbornness telling me to just “stick it out”…even I’m looking at Jellyfin and other platforms considering migrating my library away from Plex.

I would seriously suggest rolling this release back and taking it back to the drawing board. And for crying out loud…include your users (all your users) in testing. Provide an option the way Microsoft does with office products where you can opt-in to the “New” UI as a side-by-side experience to the previous UI and include feedback avenues while doing so. It’s not really a new idea.

I’d like to reiterate that I can no longer have a favorites channel list that combines both over-the-air channels from my Plex server and Plex streaming channels. Now I have to pick between one of the two sources in Live TV. Having one favorites channel list that contains both sources is much easier to navigate and I can keep watching my current channel while browsing what is playing on other channels from two different sources. If it is possible to have a multiple source favorites list, I can’t figure out how to create it. For reference, HD Homerun is my OTA channel source that feeds my Plex server.

It’s not, they know about it, but who knows if it will happen. Roku Preview has now been updated to the new experience (Plex would love to hear from us) - #364 by McWanke

again another silly choice to remove functionality for no real reason to push the ui.

This whole misadventure is absolutely amazing from every perspective.

left right ans center. seems everyone has been having issues. i wonder in the daily usage and server useage has dropped in the charts yet from people unable to access things with the new ui and going to completely different streaming services. i bet netflix and disney plus just got a bunch more subscriptions

Please bring back the ability to add/remove the plex-provided content (live tv, discover, etc) directly from the Roku Plex app. Right now we have to go into the web browser and turn this off, and it propagates to all plex client devices. We need to be able to set this from the device, save per device, as sometimes we want that content on one playback device but not others.

Also, please being back the clock to sub-menus. For some reason it’s been banished to only the Home Screen, which makes no sense.

Completely tone deaf. This update is horrendous.

Even if it functioned properly the UI is terrible. I have yet to have anyone give me good feedback about it. The previous UI was basically perfect. Unfortunately if it stays like this I will be forced to leave this product.
