Roku New Experience Release Update

You say the playlists are still there, why can’t we creat or edit the playlists from anywhere except the web app? I don’t understand why features keep being removed

Even when I start the Plex app and go back to the home screen I do not get the ‘Restart App’ option over the app when using the asterisk button. This does not work on all Roku players apparently.

How about removing the unnecessary season tiles before the first episode in every season? Why does that need to be there? If you click it the buttons lock up and you can’t do anything.

And even if that didn’t happen what is the purpose of this tile? To click it and it brings you right back to the same season you were already on? Adding this was nonsensical! Get rid of it! This was not an upgrade!

Now when you enter a TV season instead of bringing you to the next unwatched episode highlighted and ready to go it brings you to this stupid tile and you have to scroll over to the right. Not an improvement! Put it back the way it was!

Put back the “Watched” notation for watched movies and shows. Removing that and only having to go by the filled in white circle is too subtle. This is not an improvement!

Before the clock was in the upper right corner all the time on movie and episode menus. Now it’s gone and can only be seen on the main home page and browsing libraries. Anything deeper the clock disappears. Not an improvement!

Move the libraries back to the left side of the screen, or create an option to have it both ways, vertical side or horizontal at the top of the screen so we can do either.

The option for the classic layout is gone. Bring it back! Not an upgrade to get rid of something like that!

Before when playing a music album it showed the album art cover at the top of the app in the upper right side while you browsed the rest of Plex. Now it is moved to the left side of the screen and the album art is gone, replaced with a musical note symbol. Seeing the small icon for the cover art of the album you are listening to was better. This was again, not an improvement.

Update the app so everyone gets the ‘Restart App’ option on the home screen when you highlight the Plex app. It doesn’t show on my Roku players even after entering Plex and going back to home!

Lastly, if you don’t want to rollback to the previous version then don’t. You can keep this current Plex app after fixing all of the things described above and then put the old app back as Plex Classic,

You don’t even have to update it or do anything to it, just give it to us and leave it there for those that want to use it. Why won’t you do that? To not do this is to be arrogant and purposely force the new app on everyone whether they like it or not. Not a good business move!

I did not see any mention of fixing the “old server showing as primary and not being able to delete it” - roku will not “unsee” my old server I have not used for years and it has chosen THAT server and libraries to be the defaults, so I can’t actually put ANY of my favorites on the horizontal bar at all. I have tried for 3 days deleting, rebooting, every trick google and reddit advise. None worked. I have been a member since 2014, but I am just about done now. This is beyond maddening

Why did you remove the continue watching and recently added movies tv and music from being added to the home screen? I find this distasteful. Instead of allowing my media to be on home screen you’re pushing pay to play items on the home screen, without the option to turn off btw. Can we get the options to put our media showcases back on the home screen with options of removal of all the other? I have 90TB of media there is nothing i need from any other service but my own.

Hey! Glad to hear that the watching experience should be the same, even with the move to keep the playlists within the library.

BTW you know if they did this to Roku they are going to do the same thing to all the other platforms, including the web. It’s just a matter of time until they drop that garbage on us. They didn’t “just change Roku” that was just the one they did first.

Plex Management to the Employees: “Everyone loves our GUI and can find anything they want, we can’t have that… F that chit up and fast! Oh and make sure the stuff like “discover” that no one uses, is the only thing the old people can find. We hate it when our customers are happy.”

@McWanke the biggest problem you face is the rollout. You need to move the new payment verification server side and roll back the stable release on the storefronts to the latest old-ui. Then be more serious about maintaining the beta channels like TestFlight.

Right now Plex is accumulating a really bad reputation and you’re building distrust every day you won’t be able to gain back. Stop this madness, idk who needs to hear this, you or your project manager or your CEO, but every time you deploy this half baked product out of beta you’re making things worse! Can somebody at Plex Inc. get a hint??

Hello,

This is just a thought but since you don’t plan on rolling it back, perhaps you should post instructions on how users can manually do it themselves and turn off the update feature so they don’t feel a need to switch to other players.

IMHO - the feature set - not the interface were the problem with the old one - e.g. playing music types. I loved the old go to a show, see the stars, see what else they are on in your collection - maybe add and option to go to their IMDB page and look at what else they’ve bee in. Other than those two things I really can’t think of anything else I’d change.

Thanks for the feedback throughout here. On the season level cards - there are some season-level functions and information that we have displayed on other clients that we never had available on TV clients. I tried to explain it in more depth here, but I also know that this card is being looked at more internally and don’t know what changes might be coming here yet.

We pushed a hotfix yesterday to address this issue. Please check for an update on your device to resolve this issue.

We pass along the “watched” vs “unwatched” notation every time it comes up. This one had nothing to do with this Roku update, but I do recognize it is still a concern for many people.

Thank you - I will pass this feedback along. First feedback I have seen on the “mini player” (not sure if that is the right thing to call it, hence the quotes here)

I don’t think that we control this option - it might be a Roku-OS level function. If it is then it could very well be different across devices and/or Roku OS functions.

Thank you for the comments here. Appreciate you taking the time for this writeup.

This is an interesting comment as I am not sure how an older server in your list would impact creating favorites. Would be interested to hear some more about this to see if we can help. What should be happening is that even if you have multiple servers (old, new, whatever) accessible you should still be able to favorite libraries from any server. What I would suggest is that when you have one of the older libraries selected in the horizontal bar, hit the ’ * ’ button on your remote and a menu should pop up where you can remove that library as a favorite. Then maybe consider removing all favorites and then re-selecting the favorites that are newer, active, and what you want to see.

I think the large disruption for most (and I can easily say for me) is the switch from left hand nav to top nav.

History Lesson: Top Nav was attempted once before (…in the dark times… before the Empire). Left Nav was the primary mode of transport until a major overhaul was introduced that introduced Top Nav, and combined libraries across servers. It rolled out on smaller audience devices like the Xbox and caused a bit of a stir because it was such a radical change. When it hit Roku (history repeats itself) the community exploded as many of us predicted it would. It took a few months, but we got the standard “We hear you” response and Left Nav returned in the form of the “Uno” interface, which was intended to unify navigation across all devices. Sound familiar?

So, here we sit again today. I would wager solid money that if you’d rolled the update but still had a Left Nav menu system, you’d likely continue to have some complaints, but the majority of them would be purely about functionality. So, while I realize a full rollback isn’t possible, Plex should at least consider that their TV watching community desires a vertical menu system. Always has. Likely always will.

I keep thinking about trying to write my shopping list horizontally across the top of my notepad and telling myself that it’s a “New Experience” and to just get used to it.

  • The new navigation across the top is really, really, really, bad.

    • The side library bar was far superior.
    • This is not a change I can live with.
    • To fix this the entire new UI would need to be redesigned again.
    • Recommendation: Put the old app back. Go work on this more until it does not stink.
  • The app is buggy

    • This happens with new releases. I could tolerate this for a while if the UI was not so terrible.
    • Recommendation: Put the old app back. Go work on this more until it does not stink.
  • If you read through this post it seems nobody can find half the features

    • This reenforces how bad the UI is.
    • When people who have used this for years cannot figure it out you have serious design problems.
    • Recommendation: Put the old app back. Go work on this more until it does not stink.
  • The library bar is too unresponsive

    • When you highlight a library the UI is just slow and unresponsive enough to make you hit the OK button thinking nothing is happening. Then your thrown off and trying to figure out what happened.
    • This is on a brand new Roku Ultra.
    • Changing screens on hover like this is confusing. I am watching every member of my family being frustrated by this.
    • Recommendation: Put the old app back. Go work on this more until it does not stink.
  • Almost every person here hates the “New Experience”

    • I am already tired of my friends/family complaining to me about it.
    • Recommendation: Put the old app back. Go work on this more until it does not stink.

“We’ve heard you loud and clear, and we still don’t care.”

Excellent business model!

This is a classic example of overengineering and “fixing” something that wasn’t broken and making it 1000 times worse. Usually when this happens, it’s a company whose programmers clearly don’t use the application on a day-to-day basis. Maybe that’s happening here, but that would be surprising.

This update is garbage. Fix it, or give us a Classic View.

I’m almost positive I’ve never made a post on here before, but after being forced into the new UI, I felt like I had to come here for solutions. I see that plex’s stance is “deal with it." Add another to the list of people who think the new UI is abysmal and would like a “classic" option.
