Roku New Experience Release Update

When I started the Plex app this morning, all my favorited libraries were no longer favorited. I have about 20 libraries and only 2 of them showed up when “Libraries” was selected. Sure, I was able to favorite them again and they showed up. The problem is that I spent some time yesterday reordering the libraries in the horizontal menu using the “*” button on the remote. All of that reordering was gone. Reordering is extremely cumbersome since you have to select the library, push the “* button and then move the library. You have to do this for each library.

On the web app, all you needed to do was click the 3 dots “Action” on any library and select “ReOrder”. You could then easily drag and drop any of the libraries to how you want them to be ordered.

This is another good reason to get rid of the Horizontal tabs and implement a vertical tab interface. Web browsers have been touting the new option for vertical tabs as the “Modern” approach. Plex had this and now it is gone.

The UI is just awful. It. Is. Awful. Could you not at the very least provide an option to put the libraries on the left so they’re visible? People want information on screen, and there’s so so much less now. When Firefox finally added vertical tabs recently it was such a godsend, why is Plex going backwards?

Interestingly, during the beta, you did have to click to switch libraries rather than switching just on navigation and that was considered an improvement. I don’t know when they flipped it back to switching automatically but I definitely preferred the click to change rather than changing on “hover”.

Very Late Edit @WBoweIII : This is now an optional setting called “spring-loading” you set in app under Settings→Experience - you can turn it off or on now. See how fun it is as they add\change settings and function, even during the beta, and there’s no documentation about it?

Because they’re having the same experience I am, I assume, where the old Plex server libraries are the only libraries listed. I literally cannot see a single library from my current Plex server on my Roku now so that I can favorite anything. I can see other people’s servers and libraries from Roku just fine. I can see my Plex server and it’s libraries on other platforms.

Where do you recommend I go from here?

OK

If this is it and we have to live with it on our ROKU devices I have one request. I can navigate around the cumbersome new interface but I need the “Continue Watching” bar to be at the top of the page when I open this app. I have PLEX to access my files and have zero interest in anything else. So just put the continue watching bar back up at the top where it was and allow those of us that have supported this platform for over a decade to continue using it without a navigation manual.

Oh yes indeed. Last big change they made I was very vocal about it. You can even see it in my post history here. I gave an honest to god damn.

This change though? Not even worth trying anymore. Last time they told us to pound sand, this time they’re telling us to pound sand. Next time (and they have made it clear there will be a next time), they’re going to tell us to pound sand. When the only move that would surprise me is to do right by their customers it’s time to get going.

I’m watching this whole thing go down while grateful that I’ve got Emby and Jellyfin going properly now. Still working on migrating all of my users, and soon Plex will stop being a line on my bank statement.

At this point I don’t think there’s anything they could do to win my trust back. I don’t want them to. I don’t care if they try. I’m past frustration. All I feel is apathy now.

Thank you for the reply! I sure hope we can fix the error….
I could live with the new Ui if we can.
I have done that “*” “remove” thing so many times my fingers hurt. Even after deleting the app from roku *( a bunch) and logging out and back in (a pain with my long PW) - The problem is that they just come right back. The only way to access the movies, shows, etc… on my main server is to use the 3 dots and scroll down them all. (I have “hearted” them many, many times also and one will pop up on the horizontal libraries bar, but it will not stay there as a “favorite”

  • It’s the weirdest thing.
Also, I have gone back to my plex server on Windows 11, where I control downloads and everything else, and have made sure that my old server is not in “authorized devices” or “owned” or anywhere - the name MikeHP14 no longer exists anywhere except on the Roku app!
  • So I spent most of the night and this morning DL Jellyfin and configuring it just in case all my plex users can’t handle the new experience Ui… but I have been with plex since the developer asked for a few trial users on reddit back in 2013 or 2014 or whenever, so I am VERY attached to it and do not want to use the JF app… It’s OK, but it’s not PLEX!! Thank you and I really hope we can figure this out ! I’m certainly willing to keep trying! - Mike Owens

dogsivu Plex Pass
Exactly - if I go to the 3 dots and scroll down I see my main libraries, but I have to do this every time. “*” “remove from favorites” has no effect and “hearting” the ones I need has no effect either. It will actually delete ONE favorite, but it just pops right back on the horizontal bar anyway.
I have rebooted, deleted, logged out, re-downloaded the roku app numerous times. I have made sure the old server is not authorized on my plex server, etc… Nothing fixes this issue. I am not happy with the new interface in general, but I can live with it IF I can See MY main server files on the bar and on “home”

  • training all my subscribers though… I don’t know about that

@McWanke Though I don’t care for the message, I appreciate the communication.

I’m assuming that Plex really believes in this new UI. I propose that you put both apps up, one as “Plex”, and the other as “Plex Classic”, and let the users decide which they prefer. This will give your marketing folks some feedback without forcing everyone to change without notice. All the complaints can be addressed and the new UI can be modified gradually over time to accommodate user concerns and needs. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

I saw someone else mention that bug: Unable to favorite libraries

Might be useful to hit that topic up with your experience and logs and such.

I’ve never posted before, but now that my Plex is completely broken, I feel lost on how to move forward. This has been the worst update to my Plex in years and I can’t even use the product I paid for anymore.

Please roll the Roku release back. This is a huge mistake and I’ll be forced to stop using Plex if you don’t.

I have the same problem and I have seen posts from few other people with the same problem. It’s the same problem I’ve had on iOS since this was rolled out there, it’s just a significantly bigger problem on a TV than a touch screen. Unable to favorite libraries

Hoping this is addressed farther down the thread. For me, this is only the main account (all sub-accounts work fine) and only on Roku (both Roku devices in the house).

But I’m 50+ items farther down and haven’t seen anything about it yet so I’m not very hopeful.

So can you guys simply put back the ‘Watched’ text at the top for all videos that are watched? Removing it was not an improvement.

Can you fix it so that when you click a TV season it brings you to the next unwatched episode like before? Putting the cursor on the new unnecessary season tile is not an improvement. Neither is putting that tile there in the first place, just get rid of it.

Can you put the clock back on all pages like it was before? Not an improvement getting rid of it.

Can you put the album art back for the audio player at the top of the screen like before and get rid of the new musical note icon?

I don’t think these changes are that much to ask. It was all things we had before that Plex took away in this ‘Update’. But it is really a downgrade when you look at it when useful items are removed.

This new UI is just no longer usable for what PLEX was designed for….

You should leave the old UI there, with a link to the PLEX-Streaming UI for those who need yet another streaming service!!!

plex pass from –> 2014

Originally the clock was gone but they put it back… but not everywhere it used to be. I started this post to ask for it to be added in more places and was gonna bump it after some of the posts slowed down if you’d like to do that too: Clock on Up Next please

I totally agree about that season\show tile (see this topic discussing that card) but if it’s a show you started watching already it very much should focus on the “next unwatched episode”… unless it’s the first episode (yay inconsistency). If it’s not doing that, it might be worth reporting as its own topic as a bug because they very much assured us that’s how it definitely should work.

Even if all the “fixes” happen, why not just acknowledge the navigation is terrible (even if it worked or things were "more visible”) and, like NEVER BEFORE, people are screaming the obvious. Roll back or fork the option. Of all the products/companies, PLEX should be OK with saying - “we listened to our clients,” nothing else makes sense in this case.
