Scanner can't find a movie

Server hardware: Raspberry Pi (Arm based) running raspOS linux
(Note: this “machine” performs surprisingly well.)

I have at least one movie: “Hondo (1953)” (an old John Wayne movie) that the Plex Media Server cannot find and display on the Movies list. I have carefully checked the IMdb name and year. I use separate directories for each movie in my library (approximately 1000 titles.)
I have tried just the movie name and year and have now applied the IMdb number to the directory and names as well:

pi@mixerpi:/mnt/Media/Movies $ tree Hondo\ (1953)\ {imdb-tt0045883}/
Hondo (1953) {imdb-tt0045883}/
├── Hondo (1953) {imdb-tt0045883}.en.srt
└── Hondo (1953) {imdb-tt0045883}.mp4
0 directories, 2 files

pi@mixerpi:/mnt/Media/Movies $ ls -al Hondo\ (1953)\ {imdb-tt0045883}/
total 873372
drwxrwxrwx 1 pi pi 4096 Sep 19 15:46 .
drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 225280 Sep 19 15:45 …
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi 77804 Jan 9 2022 ‘Hondo (1953) {imdb-tt0045883}.en.srt’
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi 894022649 Oct 26 2021 ‘Hondo (1953) {imdb-tt0045883}.mp4’

Neither naming scheme has allowed my server/scanner to display this movie in the “Movies” list. The permissions and owner/group are the same as many other movies that are easily seen.

Any help would be appreciated. Regards, “J”

P.S. If you need additional information I am happy to provide. I’m an “old” computer engineer and linux geek.

I just recreated for you.

Completely plain (didn’t try to overpower it)

[chuck@lizum ~.2003]$ ls -la /glock/qa/movies/Hondo\ \(1953\)/
total 16
drwxr-xr-x 2 chuck chuck 38 Sep 20 01:42 ./
drwxr-xr-x 87 chuck chuck 8192 Sep 20 01:42 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 chuck chuck 272 Sep 20 01:42 Hondo (1953).mkv
[chuck@lizum ~.2004]$

I can see permissions are fine.

Do you have embedded name or title in the MP4 ? (that’ll mess it up)

Maybe dance it and clear off the imdb tag?

Chuck,

Thanks! I took the same path as you and created a 2 byte .mp4 file to replace my real movie file. It now shows in my Plex library so the problem IS the content of the movie file.

I have already removed the imdb info from the directory and the file names. I am at a loss with your “dance it” comment. I’m guessing you mean a tool that can clean up the movie file. Could you quickly point me in the right direction?

J.

Apologies on the term.

Plex Dance is a procedure we use to make PMS completely forget a file and have the media then be scanned again AS IF NEW

Thanks again, Chuck! I was able to run my Hondo .mp4 through HandBrake and the resultant output file was shown in the library! When I copied it into the library location Plex automatically scanned it. I appreciate the hints. I’m going through my entire file library (1000-1100 directories!!) to see if any other movie files are being missed.

(Now if I could only get my computer name sorting could match the Plex library order…)

Regards, J.

Not to plug a product – I use FileBot .
IMHO/UC

  1. It never misses with the renaming rules I’ve given it
  2. I drag and drop a group of entries into the left panel, do the lookup, it will:
    – ASK if it can’t identify the file 100% on its own (I select which it is)
    – RENAME the directory & files
    – MOVES the input to the new directory (with correct names)
    – CLEANUP on Aisle 3

Example:

  1. Movies are in directory /nas/movies
  2. Renaming rule: /nas/movies/{n} ({y}) [{vf}]/{n} ({y}) [{vf}] – This gives resolution - (1080p/2160p)
  3. Being in “movie” mode
  4. Right-click " - “Movie: TheMovieDB”
  5. It spins for a bit while processing
  6. If any questions – they get asked at this point
  7. When done, the proposed new naming is displayed in the right panel

  1. When I hit “Rename” it does the work.
    – If I don’t like any one. I can drop it from the list and come back to it later.

FWIW:
I started doing 10 at a time. I soon gained confidence with it and was doing 30 at a time then 100. The entire library was renamed in very short order.

When I realized I’d forgoten something, I edited the format , selected and dropped in ALL the files in the left panel. I did the entire movie library in ONE shot.

I will say – I like this program so much I bought the lifetime license for it.

PS: It even has a built in {plex} renaming rule. It understands Plex movies and TV (basics). Mine is a bit different due to the extra details.
