20% of my movies are not being recognized

Server Version#: Version 4.85.1
Player Version#: any version
Being quite desperate over here… :frowning: I have Plex in place now since about 5 years without any major troubles. Now since more and more movies are not being recognized by the Plex server:

  • The movies are not shown on Tizen and on the web gui
  • I am running Plex server on Synology NAS
  • I only download mkv files
  • The file names do not contain any of the words being filtered out
  • The file structure is the same since years: Movies/Movies, Movies/Series (two libraries)

I have tried the following already:

  • Renamed the name of the movie files
  • rescanned library / rescanned meta data
  • recreated the libraries
  • moved the files to different locations within a new temp. library
  • uninstalled and re-installed Plex server (completely uninstalled with removal of all settings)

I’ve read through a number of articles, it has nothing to do with the path of the files (since most of the movies are being recognized), no file name violation, no codec issue (it’s 1080p x264, x265). The files have different sizes (between 2Gb and ~10Gb.

When I play these files on my PC with VLC all is fine.

Please help!
Thanks
Chris

Mind sharing a specific example?
Have you already filtered your library for duplicates to see if Plex maybe misplaced the items and matched the files to another movie in your library?

ChuckPa posted this for me to test for database screwiness. Might help you. (was already to late for me, but im confident i will need it shortly)

Are all your filenames correct?

Hi, for some movies I had to add the imdb id for Plex to correctly recognize it. E.g. add {imdb-tt2382320} for a bond movie directly after the movie name. Cheers, Alex

Thank you for your suggestions.

@PunkleJones
I have re-installed Plex from scratch, the same movies are still missing tha have been missing before

@tom80H
Filtering on doublicates only shows 3 movies with real doublicates
Example of a path: \diskstation\Filme\Filme\Massive.Talent.2022.German.AC3MD.1080p.BluRay.x264-ODiN\Massive.Talent.2022.German.AC3MD.1080p.BluRay.x264-ODiN.mkv

@granjan7
No filename violations according to the Plex documentation

@relex_quickline_ch
I’ve already tried to add the imdb id in the file name. Nothing works

How can this be?

Cheers
Chris

doesn’t seem to add up all the way…

vs.

Edit:
This is a naming example according to the documentation / official naming schema:

diskstation
  Filme
    Filme <- folder linked to your library
      Massive Talent (2022)
        Massive Talent (2022).mkv

If you need to keep the technical stuff, put it in square brackets so it doesn’t interfere with your Plex Media Server, e.g. Massive Talent (2022) [German.AC3MD.1080p.BluRay.x264-ODiN].MKV

That’s the same problem i’ve been having. Plex refusing to see newly added movies, but not all consistently. Some movies gerts added straight away. (im also NOT “updating” my libraries. The new ones is garbage and removes movies already added)
Not gotten any solution for it expect “plex dancing” again and again until maybe Plex gets tired of it and add the files out of spite.

I dont see a movie called “Massive Talent” from 2022. There is " The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" from 2022, so possibly correctly naming the file would help plex.

It’s the localized title… German distributors have a habit of giving releases different English language titles for no obvious reason… e.g.:

Original Title German release title
Chef Kiss the Cook
Captain America: The Winter Soldier The Return of the First Avenger
Tomorrowland A World Beyond
Thor: The Dark World Thor - The Dark Kingdom
Silver Linings Playbook Silver Linings
Horrible Bosses Kill the Boss

it appears the title is listed as “Massive Talent” in the Netherlands too; also the “official short title” in the US.

You need to use the English movie name, not a localized version of it. My standard suggestion is:

If you want to save yourself a lot of time I would recommend using Download - tinyMediaManager and use ${title} (${year}) {imdb-${imdb}} as the new name format.

is your library pointed to that path or just \diskstation\Filme\ ?

That’s not necessary. Plex is perfectly fine with localized titles in your files. The only use case where you must use English language folder names is for the Season folders in a tv-show.

It’s \diskstation\Filme\Filme\

Renaming the files does not have any impact on the fact that these movies are not being shown. Also, when I store self recorded videos in the same folder, they get shown - obviously without any meta data. Why is this not happening with some of the downloaded movies?

Even when I remove the “techical stuff” it does not change anything.

One more thing I’ve observed: When I filter the libraty on folders, these folders are listed but do not contain any content…

What version of Plex Media Server are you running? 4.85.1 is the version of Plex Web. Look in SettingsServer_Name → General or Authorized Devices.

Which scanner & agent are you using in the movie library? Edit the library, choose Advanced. The scanner & agent will be listed at the top.

Plex Dance the movie after renaming it.

If you are using the Plex Movie scanner and agent, add the IMDB or TMDB ID to the folder and file name.
/Massive Talent (2022) {imdb-tt11291274}/Massive Talent (2022) {imdb-tt11291274} [other stuff].mkv

With 5 years under your belt, I’m guessing you know how to name things and generally run the system, but with age sometimes you get a Dad bod, and in terms of linux, you run out of inodes.

I didn’t see it in the things you checked.

Are yours plentiful?

Have you given permission to PlexMediaServer and whatnot on DSM 7?

seems like evidence of the above. Let us know the things FordGuy asked and how it’s going.
