Separating discs with different names

Hi. There are albums with a different title and album art for each disc which I prefer to show as separate albums but plex insists on merging them to a single album.
I tried separating them manually by editing the metadata but plex reverted my changes when it refreshed the metadata. This is very frustrating.

This issue was opened in the past:

but none of the suggestions there works.

Server Version#: 1.25.5.5492
Player Version#: 4.74.2

I’ve been able to accomplish this. Sometimes. It’s all with metadata and keeping each disc very separate. For example:

Each one of these Abby Roads is in a separate folder. The metadata is such that all are:

Disc 01
Date: each is a day apart so that they are different
Track Numbers: all are the same 01-12 (or whatever)
Artist, Album Artist: all the same, in this case The Beatles, Beatles, The
Album title: this is where it gets tricky. I use the following convention for each folder:

Abby Road 01: Original Master
Abby Road 02: 50th Ann
Abby Road 03: Demos

When I added it into plex, it showed correctly. Sometimes it doesn’t and you have to delete from plex, plex dance, then re-add them and they usually will take.

In this case, I was able to edit the title in plex to get rid of the numbers. That’s why you don’t see them in the example. Sometimes this makes them combine and you have to delete and plex dance.

Sometimes not all the album “match” properly. One will have updated reviews and whatnot metadata, the other will show unmatched. Matching them will sometimes combine them, sometimes wont. I typically manually copy and paste the info I want if it doesn’t match. Again, if it combines the albums you have to delete, plex dance, etc to “fix” them

As you know, the real issue is no consistency. Sometimes they just flat out don’t work. If you don’t update the disc numbers to all be the same, or leave one blank, Plex will probably combine them. If we could add disc names to the disc numbers, even manually, it would solve a lot of this since combining them wouldn’t be as much as an issue, and it would be particularly handy in themed boxsets. but you can’t so if you want them separate you have to do this. My Neil young is like this due to the way his Archives boxsets are broken up by disc theme:

It seems like the music is always going to be a broken thumb since we never see fixes for the most part, and any changes tend to break any unofficial work arounds. Plex seems to think it’s their way or the highway with this metadata, I wish it was more fluid.

If I am understanding you correctly. You want both discs from a live album to show up individually with different album cover images and different names instead of as one entry? Try this I think it might work for you. First make sure to unmatch or fix match the albums. Sometimes that is all you need to do. Just unmatch them and then name them what you want, create a different sort title or different title and they should separate.

If that doesn’t work for you then give this a try.

For example I have a live DMB concert that is covered by two discs. But both Disc 1 and Disc 2 are under the same entry and show up as one.

Below is a pic of my test library with one live show with Two Discs worth of music:

As you can see you click on the album and it shows both discs. To get Plex to separate the two discs if the unmatch doesn’t work, I create two folders one with the words - Disc 1 in the name and one with the word - Disc 2 and then Plex sees these as two different albums.

Normal file structure is below. We need to change from this.

To this

As you see I now have two folders separated by disc and named by disc.

And then I can attach a different image and the final result in Plex library is this:

As you can see this is now the same album but it is separated into two entries. The one with Dave and his guitar is disc 1 and the other one with the green letters is disc 2.

Thanks @Ryuzaki_2 and @russbgrant. For some reason I didn’t get any notification on your replies.
I can confirm that changing disc numbers to be 1/1 for all discs and doing the plex dance makes plex separate them.

Actually, just tried this with another album and it works just by doing the plex dance even with different disc numbers. Guess there was some recent change which fixes that.
