Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

Synology NAS for storing the actual media

I’ve got my media stored on a NAS, shared via SMB. The Shield has a drive mapped, and Plex seems to be able to scan it for media, but it just can’t play the media. Is that similar to what everyone else is experiencing?

Edit: I spoke too soon, seems to have wiped out the shows from my PMS database

Sort of…most of us have their library located on a USB-stick connected to the shield as an external SSD/drive… (at least that’s how my setup is)

I shall just wait for the updates, I think I’m well boned at this point :upside_down_face:

Edit: The NAS issue seems to have just been related to the Plex server permissions, separate from the USB issue. So that’s sorted for me (see: Nvidia Shield update removes Plex Server Permission). Unfortunately…my Plex database was wiped due to the files being inaccessible, but at least it works with my NAS storage again.

Hmm… The weekend and still no ETA. It’s looking more and more like it’ll be a solid week or more before many of us have somewhat functional servers again…

I’m pretty new to Plex and Android TV but I’ve learned a hard lesson from this android update and other player and PMS updates over the past 2 years. Here are the 2 things all Plex users should avoid:

  1. Under no circumstances should anyone have auto update switched on in Google Play for their shield. If Plex is working don’t change anything until it stops working. Only then should you update the player or the PMS.

  2. Wait at least 3 months before installing any Android update to the Shield. Clearly Plex uses its users to troubleshoot issues after an update is rolled out as opposed to checking if there will be issues before roll out and updating their software as required. Sad but true.

I live by this and am so thankful I have not updated to 9.0. I would have been devastated if this had happened to my server.

I hope NVIDIA and Plex can get to the solution quickly for all those affected.

Wise words sir thanks

How do you stop the Shield from updating the android version?

Nice. Plex working on a fix! Going yo join beta channel

everything works again but with a reinstall of everything on shield 2019.

Go to Settings → Device Preferences → About → System Upgrade. From there, you can turn off auto upgrade.

In addition, if you click on check for upgrade, you can also turn off auto-download.

I took it an extra step - if you then go to Settings-Apps->See all Apps → Show System Apps, then scroll down to System Upgrade (towards the bottom) and click on it. Turn off notifications, and it will never bug you again to “Upgrade”

This is how I fixed the problem. I’m done with PMS on the Shield this was the last straw.

I just bought my Shield Pro a week ago so will a factory reset get me back to android before 9.
Then I can reprogram the few things I had done.?

i got the same problem

And i could not change any settings on PMS server… And now i have deleted my PMS server and i cant create a new server just getting an error…
So i think the best solution is to wait for an update…

Hot fix is not the solution if you have PMS set up on a external drive. Looks like we are waiting for a Plex update that will fix things.

PMS doesn’t autoupdate you’ve always had to do it manually (not sure about the client)

RxBrad, I have been waiting for the official fix, but also growing bored waiting on it. Do you know where I can go to request the hotfix? I am still not sure I want to try it, but out of shear boredom, I may.

Thanks

Here you go.
