I confirm with the nvidia hotfix and the sideloaded pms .apk my Plex is up and running (external hdd on USB and internal storage is extended with usb).
Not sure but I have my 128gb usb drive as adopted (non removable) storage and can’t access the android/data folder locally or over the network and files copied over the network to the USB drive are not viewable locally on the shield.
Well I agree with that, HW transcoding doesn’t work anymore here either.
But the server also disappears (for me it would only reappear after a reboot).
After a few reboots I got my access to settings restored (see my initial post on this thread).
This whole thing is so painful…
Updating from 1.23 to 1.25 is what broke my Plex, with nothing I did allowing the start/stop server button to show up. That’s why I decided to rebuild from scratch, taking 4 days to complete. Now I discover transcoding doesn’t work… so all that work for nothing. I’m very glad I didn’t do the Shield 9 update in addition to updating to 1.25. I probably won’t ever do that update since it doesn’t add anything I want, and breaks things that I use.
My strategy now is to wait for the devs to release a fix for transcoding. If it takes too long I’ll just bite the bullet and downgrade, but I’m pretty patient.
I’m guessing the Shield 9 issues are getting higher priority than transcoding at the moment. A broken Plex is a bigger problem than a hobbled Plex.
I’m not the patient type and as it is now (server shuts down by itself, no hw transcoding), Plex is basically useless, worse I get texted by friends and family who now can (sometimes) access the server but cannot watch the content (I have a lot of 4k movies that need transcoding for them).
Was this the “can’t connect securely to PMS”. I’d been trying to avoid doing a sideload but given there’s no timeline for another hotfix. I think I’ll have to bite the bullet and see if this resolves.
I updated to Shield Expérience 9 and i have the same problem. I installed the hotfix and sideloaded the PMS version in this topic, no changes. I also set the file permissions for both Plex ans PMS. PMS still won’t appear in my Plex options.
Setup : USB Key set as additional internal storage on Shield (which has the Plex data), Media is on a NAS mounted on the Shield.
Been patiently watching and reading and tonight went and done the hotfix and sideloaded the PMS update supplied by the Plex team member earlier in the forum.
It worked (eventually) after clearing the cache and rebooting. Well it worked for a while… but is now not working. No server, blank screen … what fun this is (sarcasm). Perhaps the main update NVIDIA could look at in future is a ‘roll back’ option to go back an update?
Hi just adding in my experience. I’ve updated to Nvidia experience 9, that broke PMS, then set permissions to allow storage for Plex & PMS, then installed the nVidia hotfix, then installed the PMS patch from above on this page, and still same problem after rebooting. PMS not showing in Plex settings at all and is unavailable. Set up is Shield connected to USB HDD that is also adopted storage for PMS.
For those having a problem with the server disappearing overnight where a reboot brings it back online, I found that the following fixed it for me FWIW, but of courses use a bit more power. This is on the non hotfix version of NVidia firmware.
settings > device preferences > display and sound > power control > toggle to OFF “wake shield when tv powers on” and “sleep shield when tv powers off” and “Sleep shield when TV input changes”
Same problem here. What the f is wrong , plex isn’t supposed to be one of the main app for the shield and everything should be tested before putting out crappy version that doesn’t work ?
PMS installed on an external ssd and library stored on another 5tb hard drive.
I applied for the hotfix, waiting for it… pretty sure it’s not gonna work. crossing my fingers for an update that comes out really soon.
The Nvidia hot fix will not solve the issue for those of us who have PMS on a external drive. You can try to sideload the fix mentioned above as that has seemed to work for some. Or wait for another update from Plex that is supposed to be coming sometime this week.
I am seeing something similar
When I try to move rips from my PC over the network to the hard drives attached to my shield, I am seeing lots of errors
Also the shield becomes very unstable when going through settings or trying to play some media that never had issues before.
I have PMS on an external drive, I needed both the nVidia hot fix and the Plex fix. It wasn’t fixed with the Plex update by itself.
This would be disturbing news if true, and would require a much more comprehensive re-jig by the Plex team so we can maintain access to our data.
I haven’t done the “upgrade” to Shield Experience 9.0 - I’ve been burnt in the past and tend to take a wary, wait and see, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” policy when it comes to Shield OS updates and (to a lesser extent) PMS updates. I sympathise with those who had automatic updates turned on … hope nVidia/Plex can get you going again soon!
I’ve got the 2017 Pro model that had the internal 500GB SSHD that I’ve cloned/replaced with a 500GB SSD, and I’ve moved Plex to “Internal (user accessible storage location)” of course so I can backup my data manually by “pulling” that folder to an external server, so if indeed Android/data/com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb is no longer accessible with SE 9.0 that would be a temporary roadblock to doing any backups?
One possible way forward would be to implement a built-in metadata “Export/Import” functionality so that you could “push” regular, maybe even scheduled, backups of your important metadata/databases to an external drive or network share. I think this has been on the Feature Suggestions list forever anyway …
I don’t understand why we can’t already backup and restore from the web interface. It’s incomprehensible
Same issue. PMS is installed on an external SSD, media storage is on a NAS (TrueNAS via smb). It’s been rock solid until everything broke with the Shield update.
As an alternative and until PLEX is fixed, i use VLC, but do you guys know if it is Dobly Vision compatible? I cannot manage to have DV with VLC
Well, I’m done with android 11 and all this amateur hour bs. Woke up, server unavailable, worse even : now the plex app (not pms) won’t even start, stuck on plex logo.
Literally crashed the Shield (app cannot be killed, Shield cannot even reboot, needs to be unplugged)
I’ll be downgrading firmware when I’m back from work.
This is beyond pathetic and wildly unprofessionnal.
I’ve got exactly the same problems. I have to unplug the Shield or it stucks.
