If you are using PMS that is located on an external drive that uses NTFS and exFAT, you will need the NVIDIA hotfix and the PMS APK update above (or below).
If you use FAT32 on an external drive, or use an adopted external drive for PMS storage, you just need the PMS APK update above.
The Plex Media Server APK resolves a permission issue and changes the permissions back to Allow and Disallow under the Android Settings by targeting a lower Android SDK.
After installing the APK above (or below), you might need to set the permissions again for Plex Media Server via the Android settings. Once done, either reboot the SHIELD or force close Plex Media Server and reopen the app to launch PMS. It might take a few minutes to come online.
I can confirm it comes online but the problem myself and plenty of others here still seem to have is that it doesn’t stay online. I’m assuming you are still looking into this, is that correct?
Double check the permissions in the Android settings for Plex Media Server, the settings won’t appear in Plex Android client when the server can’t be reached.
Yeah my shield has become very unstable since the update…not sure if the Hotfix has made it worse than just the main update. PMS goes offline overnight for some reason. I’m not sure if the Shield itself is just going to sleep (even though I have every sleep setting set to OFF).
The Home screen also keeps rebooting/refreshing itself when I just try to navigate around and going into apps or settings will just lock up the system and often cause it reset to the homescreen.
It’s un-useable at this point. I’ve plugged in a firestick to the TV just so the family can watch streaming apps until this gets worked out.
“See, you know how to take the reservation, you just don’t know how to hold the reservation and that’s really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody can just take them.”
I know its verboten to speak of such things, but I have the same experience with a notable addition…It removes Kodi from my Shield. When PMS won’t run and no options are available, Kodi is also noticeably absent from my apps. Not in the favorites, not in the list of installed apps.
But after a few reboots, when PMS randomly does re-launch, Kodi re-appears. When PMS locks up / crashes, Kodi disappears again. I’m using the PlexKodiConnect add-on. Seems strange, but obviously connected to something with the nVidia Shield Experience update. Can’t just be a coincidence.
In the same boat as everyone else. Plex server data is stored on external USB SSD drive and content stored on NAS. Plex now says “No items to display” and my library has disappeared. Really don’t want to install hotfix and sideload apk as doesn’t seem to be a reliable fix. Don’t want to uninstall server and lose library as have a lot of custom artwork. Plex is literally the only thing I use my Nvidia Shield for.
Yes, same here. I will also restart and it will come back up to a black screen. I’ll then need to hard power down my Shield before it will boot properly.
This does not fix the new problem I and others are reporting where after applying the hotfix and sideload of PMS our Plex servers disappear and don’t come back online and if by some miracle they do appear they continuously disconnect a few minutes later.
This is not helping us. Yes your sideload update :“allowed me” for a short time to access my PMS and has since killed it completely. This is not an adequate fix
Sincerely a regretful Plex Pass Lifetime Subscriber
I get that people are frustrated, but that doesn’t help solve the problem.
As of right now, the options are to wait for devs to work out the bugs, or revert Shield OS back, and revert PMS to version 1.24.x
Personally, I see no benefit to having the latest Android version because it doesn’t add any features I want, and breaks some that I’d like to keep (like being able to access certain Android directories for purposes of backing up Plex).
Likewise, I was perfectly happy with PMS version 1.23x. Although I’d like to see these problems fixed, I don’t really have any need since I can always have my Shield be as good as it used to by down revving the software.
There is definitely something in what is being said here.
I applied the Hotfix & installed the APK which got my PMS functioning again but Plex has not backed up my database since 10/01/22 which is the day I (stupidly) installed the Shield update.
I applied hotfix+sideloaded the apk and applied new permissions for PMS Server (after reboot it was on Not Allow). Rebooted a couple of times but unfortunately I lost the library data, so I had to rescan everything. Took some hours, it’s a 22TB collection with 3.800+ titles. Now I’ll have to check if I have duplicated folder on the USB drive.
I love Shield+PMS when it works, but managament is horrible, backups are not easily manageable. Plex should definitely do something about this, with some internal management features: backup, relocation of the db, maintenance of the db, etc.
Next time I’ll wait 3 months before a major Shield upgrade…lesson learned.
Thanks for the info. I wasn’t aware of this limitation on their hotfixes.
Not sure about NVidia, but for the PMS update, we will include a message in the release notes to indicate this fix is included, so watch the Play Store for the update of the forum release announcement page.
Not sure what would cause that so the current fix does not address this. Can you start a new thread with details and logs.
If you had the Plex data on the external drive, it would have failed to appear. Clearing the app data reset the data folder to the internal memory which allows it to work. You will not have this issue with the data folder on internal (or adopted) storage.
If the PC is locking up, that sounds like a bigger issue. I’ve not had any issues accessing the storage from my PC. Can you start a new thread with details and logs.
