Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

How can I make a hard reset with shield console 2017?

I have both the shield hotfix and the sideloaded APK installed. I have my Plex library database moved to extended storage on a USB drive. All content is stored on network shares.

I’ve just done a media library scan now and it died again. Going to do another hard reboot. Using ADB to connect to the device in this state also fails.

I’ll take this opportunity to anger everyone by blaming the victim a bit here…

Have people never had an update break something before? This situation is exactly why it’s best to wait a bit when something is new. Those with a higher tolerance for risk should adopt first, and those with lower tolerance should hold off. That’s true of anything related to technology. You take a gamble that something might be better knowing it might be worse.

The day Nvidia made it into my news feed for having an update to Shield, I scrolled to the bottom of the article and read the comments saying it broke Plex. Took me a few seconds to read about the new features and then see that there were problems.

That said, it’s a problem Nvidia and Plex must work out. Obviously their testing methodology wasn’t thorough enough to catch these issues beforehand. In some sense, testing 3rd party hardware attached to the Shield is out of scope for testing, so it doesn’t surprise me it got missed. In hindsight, that was a huge mistake.

Yes, you have a point, but:

  • this was not a beta release, it was ready for public. Dev releases must have been in the hand of developers for a while.
  • this is just a forum, and it’s highlighting a widespread issue. But forums are not representing the multitude of less tech savvy users that are facing issues now.
  • as you said this clearly show a lack of testing, as it seems pretty clear that the issue is around external devices.

Should have I - and many others in this thread - spent more time to look around and search for reports of defects from the update? In hindsight, sure.

But sometimes you just see the banner and decide to update because you assume that the most glaring issues already passed QA. This is not a small edge-case problem. It can be easily reproduced, as this thread and many other posts on different social media show. It’s not glitching 7.1 media every full moon if you click play with the tongue with the left leg raised. It’s breaking the server from starting.

And considering that when the support for external devices was introduced, and the issues it brought - I wonder if anyone remember the page with the list of “supported” fast usb 3.0 sticks from nVidia, that was promptly removed ex post saying it wouldn’t work with usb sticks but only hd or ssd drives - maybe it was expected that at least some test scenarios were using this configuration.

@anon18523487 @sixones PMS seems to be shutting down (at least for me) because attached storage becomes unaccessible at random.

When PMS stops working, I’ve also noticed I can no longer access the storage from other devices on my network (for example transferring mkv’s to the shield attached drive from my laptop). Reboot the shield, and Samba/USB drive shared over network works again. So does the PMS running on adopted storage.

Seems to be a general shield issue that communication to storage still goes down / is unstable with the latest hotfix, which only rebooting the Shield fixes.

Frustration is certainly warranted, and I am guilty of assuming too much also. As I mentioned elsewhere, I had updated to PMS 1.25.x since it’s been out for a while, but later learned it broke transcoding. In fact, it was me reading this thread where someone mentioned it was broken, and I checked, and found that it had gone unnoticed by me.

Similarly, I wonder why something as fundamental as transcoding went unnoticed. It annoyed me since I wanted to watch remotely this weekend and everything I wanted to play required transcoding.

… and I hate to say it, but anyone running PMS on Shield is somewhat technically savvy, or will become so. Lots of struggles learning and tweaking to make things behave the way I want. It’s not push button simple like an iPhone.

Thanks for providing the information, that’s extremely helpful.

Hi Tyrantii,

Can you send feedback from your SHIELD [Settings → Device Preferences → Send feedback to NVIDIA] immediately after you notice the drive get lost. Please send the bug description as “Tyrantii plex drive sleep” so we can look for it on our servers.

These logs will help us understand the issue better

@brichoi Absolutely, I’ll send it next time I see the drive go offline.

Or if a timeline isn’t known, then maybe some transparency on status: Just waiting for PlayStore approval? Gathering the materials needed for a PlayStore submission? Still testing a candidate build? Still troubleshooting a possible solution? Still gathering bug reports?

When I go to the play store and look at the what’s new section of version 1.25.3.5409 and scroll to the bottom it reads “Shield experience 9 upgrade server disappeared”

However it also says this update came out 6 days ago. Does anyone know if this is the fix for external storage that we have been waiting for? And if so should I delete the old version of PMS that is on my Shield pro and then do a fresh install?

I think that’s just them linking this discussion thread.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure. I get it now, There is a greyed out link icon that I missed. Learning more about this stuff than I really wanted to.

I upgraded to 9 a few days ago and Plex has been working fine until today. Today I saw there was an update for Plex in the play store so I did the update. BIG MISTAKE. Now I’m having the same issues as everyone else. Nothing on Plex will play because it says it can’t find the media. So my question is is there a way to rollback the Plex update that I just did?

Ok after doing a lot of reading on a few threads here and on Shields forum I was not ready to do a factory reset or any other wild attempts to fix the problem. I did however run across one post that the person said to go to apps then to the plex sever app and go to permissions and change files and media to allow all the time. I did this and now everything is working fine again with shield 9 and the newest update to plex server.

Just wanted to share my experience and finally getting PMS to work. At first using your build didn’t work. Got desperate so uninstalled PMS from shield. Installed your build and signed in to Plex and had me set up server. Had the same server name as before with error not connecting just like before. On shield went into select where to get my media from and wouldn’t let me choose my external drive connected. Got on to my laptop signed into plex and saw new version of server with same was showing up and as connected but no files were there. Was able to add the folders from my drive connected to the shield with my media. Eventually all files became available on the server and everything showing working and showing on shield. Ended up getting rid of the old server name as it was still saying not able to connect. I did not use the hotfix for this. I hope I was able to explain the best way that makes sense.

For some reason the PMS has been working fine and not disappeared from Plex settings since my last reply. It only happened on that particular day. Will start a new thread if it happens again. How do I provide logs?

Oh. You didn’t install the build I linked. It ahs to be 1.25.3.5410.

What do you mean no files are found?

Plex successfully backed up my database last night - amazing news or so I thought.

Unfortunately, once the database was backed up I completely lost PMS on the Shield again along with access to my drives.

Had to reinstall the PMS apk this morning to get everything up & running again.

This is just ludicrous. We’re now 9 days into this issue & still no sign of a permanent fix.

This is a service I am paying you for & you are not able to provide.
