Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

Ok. So I’ve installed the android hotfix and sideloaded the PMS apk. Everything worked fine for a day and now plex says it can’t find the PMS and I keep having to reboot the shield to get it working again. Once its working its good. I have a 4TB external WD hard drive attached by USB to my shield as external storage.

Is having to reboot to reconnect to the PMS a known issue that is being worked on? Is there a fix or workaround for this issue that anyone knows about? If its a known issue that needs an update from Plex please let me know and I’ll stop trying to fix. I see others seem to have the same issue.

I found that PMS crashes after, but not immediately, I try to access it remotely (on the same network at home), either to try to access settings or to stream something on the PC for testing purposes.

Tired of living the life of a guinea pig, I’ll just downgrade the Shield firmware and install 1.24 PMS.

Can anyone point me towards a PMS 1.24 apk ?

After everything went awry with Plex on Shield after this update, it made me pull the trigger on a new PC build for my server. I will never go back to Shield for running my media server again. What a ■■■■ show!

@brichoi Just sent, the drive went offline sometime between 4-9 am est. Subject I was forced to use “ports” but the body reads “Tyrantii plex drive sleep” in the report. Said it’s in the queue.

Latest issue for me is as follows
I’ve been using Xplore to move files from PC to shield attached storage as it seemed more stable than cut and paste in explorer on PC. However I have just discovered that the last file I did is showing 0 bytes on shield (and of course the original is no longer on PC).
So now I’ve got to re-rip and re-encode the file.
Going forward I’m going to have to copy, check file integrity and then delete from PC.
PITA
P.S. Still having to reboot/unplug every hour or so

Plex create a new server, after the first installation. This server do not found files from my ssd. Kodi or any other tools have no problems, to found files. Whats wrong?

I have a Shield 2017. Initially I sideloaded the server APK over SE9 and had no luck. After applying the hot fix and enabling PMS’s file access permission to always, my server was back up and running. However, there are some performance issues as even local direct play on 1080p content would buffer, and I had a 4K direct play session buffer and crash a minute into playback. Restarting the Shield helped, but it was annoying, and overall the Shield feels much slower.

A consistent issue now is that Plex would not scan for new files as they are being added (despite turning it on in settings). I need to scan my library every time I add a new file.

Shield pro 2019, withe several usb storages attached… after almost 20 factory resets:

  • disconnected all external storage
  • factory reset shield with fix
  • updated all apps
  • stopped auto updates everywhere…shield and playstore
  • unchecked all the corresponding options to avoy shield getting into standby,
  • added a usb 128 GB stick as internal storage ( must be done now, if later, wont work…gets stuck in moving files to it)
  • restart shield
  • made sure pms and plex app add the proper autorizions to access media files
  • 1st pms set up
  • updated pms with side app
  • restart shield
  • made sure pms and plex app add the proper autorizions to access media files
  • changed pms db to external usb storage (a 2nd usb stick)
  • stopped pms server
  • ejected usb external storage with the pms db
  • placed usb in win10 to get ‘old pms db’
  • returned usb to shield
  • restarted pms (didnt worked)
  • restarted shield. worked. pms started
  • started to update lybrarys…

So…if no more problems occurs now…tonight I will see the next issue… hw transwcoding… just to verify because I ve no idea on how to fix it

The fix for transcoding at the moment is to downgrade to PMS v1.24x

Really appreciate your step by step guide, but with all that effort I wonder why not revert Shield back to previous Android version, and PMS to v1.24.x?

After side loading the PMS.apk finally managed to see my external NTFS SSD. However library taking age to refresh and having to reboot every hour to start it up again. Mainly use plex for mpg 3 music files but noticied if try & click on any although seem to be playing no sound output. This is similar to when i used emby to test dlna which stopped working between my Shield / Plex & Yamaha Media Center CTX470 emby showed files but could not play them. Still waiting for dlna fix for Plex as have over 400 mpg 3 albums on ssd cannot use.

It’s been frustrating week ever since Nvidia 9.0 upgrade and now I got it fixed eventually.
I use 2TB external SSD storage and had trouble to locate.

I’m a just beginner level PMS user so all the process is in my language.
With this method, you will install a new PMS server so you won’t be able to restore your library and you need to remapping again from the scratch.

Install hot fix:

  1. On Nvidia: Go to Nvidia setting->Devices Preferences → About → Status → Serial number (write down on the paper)
  2. On your computer: Click the below link and input your serial number where is “Your answer” is (all the way bottom) NVIDIA SHIELD TV Software Upgrade 9.0+ HotFix Image
  3. Within 24 hours, you will see upgrade notification on your Nvidia then install upgrade

Install new PMS

  1. Uninstall current PMS (Go to Google play store → search Plex → Plex Media Server → Uninstall)
  2. If you download PMS from Google play store, its version is v1.25.3.5385 but you need v1.25.3.5410 so you need to install APK.
  3. https://artifacts.plex.tv/plex-media-server-experimental/1.25.3.5410-f11334058/android_server/PlexMediaServer-1.25.3.5410-f11334058-4100-f1133405-shield-arm64v8-samba-release.apk ← This is the link but I didn’t know how to install from this link so…
  4. Open ‘Downloader’ app and input ‘bit.ly/pmsapk’ → Go then it will download APK file on you Nvidia, install new PMS
  5. Go through PMS set up from scratch

With above process, I eventually was able to locate my external storage but had to remap my library from scratch. It is bit complicated but I am happy that now my Plex is working again.
Hope this helps and have an awesome day!

Just tossing in my situation to add to the list. I’ve had pretty much the same problems as everyone else since the update went live, but I’ve simply lurked in the background trying every known ‘fix’

Ultimately I ended up doing the following:

  1. Apply for nvidia hotfix
  2. Uninstall PMS Updates via Shield > Apps > System Apps
  3. Reboot
  4. Installed Hotfix via Shield > About > Check for updates
  5. Reboot
  6. Here I had to wait a few moments to see “SD Card successfully connected”
  7. Installed previously linked PMS APK (I had remote file access still)
  8. Reboot
  9. Check PMS permissions so they mirrored the required ‘Allow/all the time’
  10. Run PMS which acted like (another) new server setup.
  11. Success! (I had like 7 duplicate server names)
  12. Used the Plex app via windows to configure library locations

From this point on it would seem that every 30 minutes or so of library scanning it craps out and requires a complete Shield reboot. I was able to scan my movie library (9TB via USB) overnight but both my TV shows and my music (always the music!) seem to kill functionality within minutes that requires another Shield reboot.
For kicks and giggles I decided to verify the entire setup was working and simply play a movie for a few minutes and then stop it. Going back to the shield dashboard while I ate breakfast was enough time for something to break as I could no longer access the PMS locally or remotely. This seems to always be fixed with a reboot.
I have no ‘sleep mode’ enabled but that sure seems like something that is going on in the background either at a system or app level.

When you say you had to “remap your library from scratch”, does this mean any custom posters will be removed when using this method?

For those of you having issues with PMS shutting down, can you check your usb settings.

Settings - Device Preferences - System - USB Port Power (at the very bottom)

Mine are set to Always On and I’m not seeing PMS randomly shut down.

Also for anyone where your usb drive is still not seen, try connecting the drive to the other usb port. I have 1 usb drive that isn’t recognize on 1 port but works fine on the other.

Is installing the HotFix a prerequisite for this?

I can confirm my USB Port Power settings are set to Always On but PMS is still shutting down, I’m afraid.

Oof - Image was crazy large so I removed it.

Imgur Link for verification.

I appreciate you mentioning that! My settings look to be optimal but I’m grateful for the tip!

If you are moving your Plex data folder to an NTFS or exFat formatted drive, yes. If you are using Fat32, no.

Thank for the info.
