Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

rolled back to 8.28.0.30077 and its stuck on “Plex Media Server is starting for the first time, please wait…”

This is all I get, latest Hotfix and PMS apk (from this thread) installed.

I have no clue what to do, I don’t want to lose my metadata so I haven’t deleted any data, just cleared caches.

OK, I think its time to say this ~ do not do anything as you are just wasting your time and wait for a proper fix. Whoever is working on this has no idea and we are all wasting our time beta testing.

Personally I spent a lot of time setting up Plex from scratch on internal shield drive hoping just to move it to external when a fix is available but the “fix” deleted my data so Im just sitting till there is a proper fix and someone confirms it works.

Lesson learnt!

Thing i’m experiencing now is:
-If i add something on my external drives there is no automatic scan
-If i do a manual scan, plex crashes.

Just to update for today. Once again this morning Plex stopped at the logo and the shield also locked up. Got it going by unplugging. After a couple of tries plex back up and running. Once again I expect it will be Ok all day and will fail again tomorrow morning. Hotfix # 1 and associated PMS installed. I for one am not changing anything at the moment until its a verified fix. I can live with unplugging once a day but it really should be fixed at this stage. I’ve external NTFS storage on USB.

This is so unacceptable. Fix the problem. Its been 10 days now, and nothing works!

Hi @brichoi @sixones @anon18523487

Hotfix 2 seems to have kept adopted storage from disconnecting, so PMS is staying up much longer.

I have had HF.V2 lock up the shield twice though. I sent along a log this morning after hard rebooting it by disconnecting the power. Maybe something with failing to sleep properly?

For those who are fed up, look at getting an Intel J4125 or N5105 mini PC for a couple hundred bucks, install Linux, install Plex, and stop the cycle of disappointment that has been PMS on Shield breaking something or other with every other update. Start being able to sleep again. I really wanted PMS on the Shield to work, and it does the job admirably when it is working, but it just does not work properly often enough or give you enough control over the situation when it breaks.

It’s gone all magic in my household and the Nvidia Shield and Plex fairies have sprinkled some pixie dust on my shield!

I’ve not manually upgraded or hotfixed anything, but and this is a big BUT!!!

The shield updated itself to Hotfix #2
Plex is running on install 8.28.0.30077
Plex Media Server is running on install 1.25.3.5410

And more importantly is all appears to be working. both to the whole of my home network and outside on remote devices. I have not lost any of the database nor the metadata.

My set up like a lot of others has my Plex database on an external harddrive connected via USB to my Nvidia Shield and content is stored on a NAS. The only manual changes I made a few days ago was to change the settings in Plex and Plex Media Server to allow access to media files all the time, I’ve changed nothing else and the Shield has done the rest itself.

Fingers crossed this is a stable solution and will appear on everyone else’s Shield soon!

Trying to rebuild 3 times in a week with these patches is insanity. Why are people so committed to getting everything working with the latest unofficial releases when there hasn’t been a single person saying “things are great now”? Even if things are stable, transcoding won’t work…

Which is why I’m perplexed that people would try so hard to get this junk working when there’s already a stable version of Shield and working v1.24.x of Plex Media Server.

I mean, I’m grateful there’s guinea pigs feeding data about their broken Plex to the devs, but I don’t have any desire to moonlight as an unpaid Plex intern.

That’s not to say the problems shouldn’t be fixed, only that those who are furious already have a solution, which is a build from a couple months ago.

I’ll probably spend part of the weekend downgrading to v1.24.x myself. Hopefully I understand how to backup the DB and metadata properly so I don’t have to spend 4 days processing thumbnails.

I must be missing something but I don’t understand the comment. Sheild is now at v9 of the OS, which is where everything stopped working. What would you have people do since there’s no way to revert to a previous OS that I know of?

For me, the shield serves the house as the PMS with an attached USB drive (8tb), and a Plex client. If it can’t see the USB, or in the case now it can, but doesn’t see anything in the library, what would you have me do?

Permissions on Plex client and PMS are allow access to files. It can see the easystore drive. That’s where things end.

F

From Web, check the path your libraries are looking. Does it match where your media files are? Sound like maybe a new Plex server was created so the default libraries will not look at your easystore.

While I haven’t tried it (didn’t get the Android update), there are ways to downgrade. Here’s the first link from a Google search;

My point was only that it must be easier to do this than rebuild Plex 3x in 1 week.

Long term, the solution is probably to apply official updates when they come out, but short term people can just have the same experience they were used to a couple months ago, which was pretty darn good.

Everything working when I left the house this morning.

Nothing working when I get home just now.

This is my life & has been for nearly 2 weeks.

Awful awful service - don’t want to use the language that I think I should in case I get booted.

A disgrace.

So, here’s what I tried and it seems to be working. I went ahead and uninstalled the Plex app (kept the server exactly as it was, never deleted data). It automatically reverted to the OG version of the Plex app that came with my 2017 Shield, everything seems to be working now, I’m not sure if I’m gonna update the app now.

No, it does not! Fixing that now…! This is why I keep trying…

External USB WD Hard Drive on a NVIDIA Shield 2017. The Plex server is down. I can access the drive via other apps.

I think I’m ready to give up now.
Shield has all the fixes
PMS is latest version
Shield can see all the drives.
PMS refuses to start.
If I’m going to have to rebuild from scratch I’m going to do it on the PC. It means the PC will always have to be on, but I can’t live with this Shield experience (pun intended)

This totally worked for me! Thank you! It also worked for VLC.
