Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

On top of the issues that we already know, I am experiencing problems when downloading to a device: it was always a hit or miss feature, but now it reaches the end and then shows a generic “error downloading item”.

I was checking the logs and I found errors related to corruption in database and malformed image.

if you haven’t updated to Android 11 (Experience 9) HW transcoding should not be broken. This was a result of something changing with Android 11. Please start a new post with details and logs.

That is not my experience. I posted the below thread (which hasn’t been responded to) where I stated that I did not do the Android update on Shield, but rebuilt PMS from scratch using v1.25.5319 and transcoding does not work. I don’t think it has anything to do with Shield 9 update, but instead v1.25, because everything worked perfectly when I was running v1.23.

Today I tried accessing my Plex library over the network and the server wasn’t running, smb also wasn’t working. I hadn’t woke up the shield today so I assume it’s in some sort of deep sleep that turned off the server and smb.

When I woke up the shield the same thing, no Plex server and no smb. Also Plex media server settings were missing. I did a force stop on Plex and Plex media server then ran Plex again. Still not working. I then did a full restart of the shield and both PMS and smb are working now.

Also PMS isn’t automatically doing a scan when I add new media. I do have the setting checked to scan automatically and partial scan is also checked. Doing a manual scan works fine.

Edit: I only tried smb to the usb hdd. Tomorrow I’ll try smb to the internal storage if the external doesn’t work again.

Is this what others are seen when accessing Plex from the computer? I think this is the same screen I get from the NVIDIA Shield as well. Can’t access any of my files.

That’s not accurate about it changing with Android 11. I’m still on 9 and it’s broken. See here:

When I click reply it says this topic has been solved. I did nothing except updates and my PMS no longer works. It has worked well for months. Did I miss the solution? I haven’t seen an official update. Just a bunch of “try this, try that, sideload this”.

Just an update, if Shield isn’t put in standby, PMS (USB) runs without locking up.

So far 10 hours.

It was tagged as resolved by applying hotfixes and side-loading APKs, but it’s not a solution.

Transcoding is still broken (even on android 9 it seems), and there are still issues with external drives - db corruption, locks during scheduled maintenance, PMS crashing etc.

Me too, although for some reason Plex would not recognize my server backup so here I sit rebuilding the entire 14TB+ server with custom meta data. At least I have a working Shield again, and presumably Plex when the rebuild completes.

Anyone running external storage (data on external USB drive) should just forget messing around with hotfixes and just roll back to Android 9.

Scanning Libraries was failing if the screen saver started up. Finally got past that. Like others are reporting, something is killing the PMS when the shield isn’t used for a period of time, so when trying to use, Cannot Connect. I believe I’ve turned all power saving off, everything is always on, performance, etc…

Top ! I can’t do it, do you have a simple tutorial please?

MovieFan can you please confirm that Plex developers are working on a new version of the PMS to fix the access and hanging issues that plex currently has with many of our setups. Do you have an ETA for that PMS? And will we be told on this thread?

I think it must be something that’s running with the scheduled tasks which generally happen overnight. My PMS can stay online for 14 or 16 hours during the day but as soon as I wake up it’s stopped working.

For instance, reboot shield at 6am
Still up and running at 11pm 17 hours later
Reboot shield at 11pm
Scheduled tasks run overnight around 2am
6am when I wake up and check PMS has stopped

Even though it’s less time, it goes down.

This isn’t true, I know for a fact that Plex Hardware Transcoding was broken on the Nvidia Shield before the Android 11 update. If you had tested with the PMS v1.25.3.5385 and the previous Shield Experience you would have seen it then as well.

It went under the radar because the Shield Experience 9 Update just killed most Shield Plex Servers altogether.
The only reason I installed the Shield Experience update was because I figured it couldn’t get any worse since HW Transcoding wasn’t working anyway.

Everything works fine, since nvidia released the hotfix 2 patch. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Yesterday night I flashed my shield back to the previous stock 8.2.3 on Android 9 OS and this attached picture shows HW transcoding not working and even the video should not be transcoding at all :expressionless:

I think transcode is broken on the latest versions of PMS. Other than the shield firmware I think you need also to rollback that.

Yes, HW transcoding issue has nothing to do with the Shield Experience 9 update, but I believe is a bug in all v1.25x versions of plex.

I rolled back to the latest v1.24 version and HW transcoding is working again. Here’s where I got the .apk

Did you have to reconfigure the server from scratch?

I’m seriously considering a rollback, it’s just that it will take time, and I would like to just disconnect the external disk and reconnect it to get it picked up, without rescanning my whole library.

Found a tutorial on the shield forum, although it was a nightmare, took me several days to get the driver to work as the explanations were somewhat incomplete.

I don’t recommend doing it unless you’re familiar with bootloader unlocking/locking and such.

Also you will need a USB A to A cable and a usb keyboard.
