Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

I finally managed to go in front of the shield and reboot it: it was showing a black screen but clicking menu button showed the sleep/reset menu.

Well now it’s stuck in the rebooting shield screen, so I will probably have to remove the power cord…

Any updates on the fixes from the Plex devs?
I would avoid unlocking the boot loader and rollbacking firmware and Plex app if possible because it will take quite a while to restore everything.

EDIT: removed the power cord, now the server isn’t even starting and there is no icons to control it from the Plex app…
Unbelievable.

EDIT 2: Looks like the shield is scanning the external drive, this never happened and it’s taking ages. I hope it will eventually finish doing that…

EDIT 3: So I had to wait for Shield to finish scanning the external device (probably triggered by the power cord removal), and then reboot again, because it seems Plex tries to start without checking if it could - like in the case when the device is still being in use by the OS.
Now it’s back up, but I’m not counting it to last long.
Hope that a new APK will be delivered soon to fix permissions and transcoding.

Finally more users reporting same issue.

Plex guys there are at least 10 people in this post with the same issue, 20 days later it still can’t be reproduced?

I’m willing to upload my entire Plex Media Server folder for diagnostics its only 300Mb this needs to be fixed and it needs to be fixed asap!

I can see everything from the status, but the rest says Server settings are unavailable.
i can see the dashboard working, and everything from the status menu.
i am waiting for the HotFix from nvidea.

Getting tired trying to get this thing working properly after too many reboots, resets, rebuilds, and unplugs. I live in the bay area and will personally deliver my box and drives to Los Gatos or wherever to get it diagnosed and working the way it should. Come on PLEX (and Shield) let’s get this fixed already.

Hotfix 2 seemed to fix most of my issues other than PMS becoming unavailable overnight (like numerous people here, I have an external SSD connected to my shield). Getting rid of overnight tasks by setting the start and stop times as the same has seemed to alleviate that, as it was still running this morning. Note that I already have my Shield set to never sleep because I was previously having lots of trouble with the external storage disappearing when it went to sleep. Obviously this isn’t a permanent fix but nice to finally wake up and not have to reboot my shield to have my library available.

After having successfully resurrected PMS a few days ago I think I’ve progressed to the “something makes it lock up overnight” club.

My days now go something like this:

  • wake up; confirm server is offline
  • confirm Plex/Shield is unresponsive
  • remove power cable; plug back in
  • wait (a long time) for Shield to scan external USB; presumably because it wasn’t a clean shutdown
  • manually reconnect to the shared SMB drive on the NAS; waiting doesn’t work
  • reboot, wait a couple of minutes, and everything seems normal and happy again

… until the next morning

Just confirming what chizmw is saying seems to be what’s happening to me and a lot of people. I updated to hotfix #1 and the associated PMS a number of days ago and while annoying at least plex starts again after the unplug. However we need a fix for this issue. I’m not planning to roll back to android 9. All this unplugging and plugging can’t be good for the hardware. ETA PLEX?

I have installed your apk, on server version 1.25.3.5410 now.
Now shield says there is an update voor PMS Beta but it refuses to install…

Ive tried all of the hotfixes and sideloading, I’ve seen every bug that has been listed above. Ive read hundreds of posts on the nvidia forums, plex support forums, and dozens of others… I’ve fiddled and waited and fiddled.

My shield is sluggish, buggy, and honestly has run about the worst it’s has ever run in every respect. I’m dismayed that nvidia could do this. It’s beyond words.

I decided to roll back to 8.2.3.
So
Was it a pain?
Yes
Was it time consuming?
Not as bad as I thought.
Do you need to rebuild plex?
Yup. Bottom up.
Is everything working?
Yup.
Should I have done it sooner?
You betcha
Would I recommend rolling back?
If you are tech savvy, roll it back baby.

Now all apps are working. Plex is back and stable. The shield feels right again.

I hope you rebuilt with PMS v1.24x, because I found v1.25.x wouldn’t HW transcode anything, and after 2 weeks it stopped entirely and the server start/stop button was missing.

I’d avoid v1.25 altogether because it’s rubbish. My Plex is running perfect now that I’m on v1.24.x

We (at Channels) have also been running into this, and are trying to help Nvidia reproduce the issue so they can debug.

It appears that the issue won’t occur when using a USB flash drive. But when using USB HDD it seems to happen readily.

@anon18523487 have you been testing with HDD or flash drive?

Perhaps users here having issues can share what kind/model drive they’re using, and whether it’s usb powered or using a dedicated power brick.

You don’t have debug logging enabled so there isn’t much info n your logs.

If you can successfully reproduce this everytime, I’d be interested in digging more into your logs. Enabled verbose logging (I almost never ask for this, but we are running low on choices), reproduce the problem, grab logs. You can turn off verbose afterwards.

Hmm. I see you started scanning your fitness library, that right? It appears to scan everything properly. I see PMS is still responding, so I don’t think it has crashed.

Also seeing that at times Shield connects via SMB with signing enabled sometimes not.

That’s new. How are you seeing that?

I’ve tested both. Currently on a portable HDD (usb powered). USB drive is really slow for me so testing with that is really slow.

Damn. I forgot I disabled it eons ago because it was working fine. Enabled it again, hopefully you guys will find a fix before it will crash.

Just to add another info, I’m not using a HDD, but a SSD. Saw it mentioned in another reply of yours.

I don’t know if the type of drive matters.

FWIW we were able to reproduce using WD Elements 4TB.

The same shield didn’t reproduce any issues for a week when using usb flash drive

I don’t believe as well, but better add all info I suppose.

That is the exact model external drive that I have, granted after having hotfix #2 from Nvidia, force stopping and clearing cache and app data for plex and pms, sideloading Version 1.25.3.5448 from this thread, rebooting, and then setting up libraries from scratch my issues have stopped and everything is stable. Its been almost 72 hours now, where it would have crashed overnight when i was running 1.25.3.5410 that shipped with the hotfix 2.
EDIT
Ignore same model, I have WD MyBook 4TB, which is powered with external power brick

How did you do it ??

WD 8TB Elements
WDBWLG0080HBK

Formatted to exFAT
Using factory data cable and factory power supply. Both Shield Pro ports set to always on.

It was the most stable best running Plex system I’ve ever had (I’m in over 10 years) until the latest updates absolutely wrecked it beyond belief. Reboots do nothing for me. Mine crashes the same as everyone else, during most any scans or when left alone a while, but requires a PMS uninstall / reinstall to ever get PMS running again. Just not worth my time to play system admin and technician with it so I’m out of Plex for a while. Hope that info helps someone else, in the meantime.

Samsung Portable SSD T5 USB 1TB (Black) formatted by Shield as Removable Storagw (NTFS I’m pretty sure).
