Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

Another curious thing…

\<pms_ip_address>\internal\Android\data\com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb is no longer accessible while all other sub-dirs under \<pms_ip_address>\internal\Android\data\ remain accessible

The message is “You do not have permission to access \<pms_ip_address>\internal\Android\data\com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb. Contact your network administrator to request access.”

That’s normal for Android. You can’t access the internal data folder unless your device is rooted.

Edit - If you’ve moved your data to an external location, you should be able to access that.

I was always able to access it prior to the NVidia Shield firmware upgrade to 9.0

See my edit. That wouldn’t be the correct path to the external storage.

I do see the two options:

Internal (system storage location)
Internal (user accessible storage location)

I’ll move it to the user accessible location and try to access remotely again. Thanks.

I can see this getting messy people trying this that and a bit more of that and still no joy including me don’t want to end up with a mistakenly wiped external hard drive I’m powering off until there’s a fix

Experimental potential fix still not working for me

The last entry in my log folder was pre-shield update

<pms_ip_address>\internal\Android\data\com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb remains not accessible even after moving to Internal (user accessible storage location) and rebooting both the Shield and the computer accessing it remotely.

On my other Shield device that has not been upgraded to 9.0, <pms2_ip_address>\internal\Android\data\com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb continues to be accessible.

Got it working by:

Uninstall currently installed PMS app
Install version 1.23.4.4805
Use computer to re-add paths to my media.

Will wait for official fix before updating this one.

Edit: since this worked, and it now used internal storage for pms data, maybe I can update to latest now?

Oh you are right. I was thinking of another folder. On Android 9, I can access this folder and blocked on Android 11.

I am having the same problem. I have made sure all apps are on the most current version. When I go into plex it does not show anything under Plex media server.

There have been significant changes to storage privacy and management from Android 9 to Android 11. These URLs make for interesting reading:

Hopefully there will be a good solution that addresses the additional security constraints in Android 11.

I have a similar problem. My media files are on a NAS server which I can mount no problem but plex no longer sees the files.

If I go to the https://app.plex.tv/desktop app and edit or create a library “next” is grayed out so I cannot access the add folders section. Server settings are unavailable.

I just installed the nvidia hotfix (9.0.1) and it doesn’t resolve anything at all.

install the plex media server hotfix, (don’t remember where i found it though), go BACK into system settings, set both plex and the media server permissions to allow storage access, reboot - that worked for me finally!!! still can’t find internal connected storage but for now this works

it unchecked the storage permissions when i first installed this update

fixed permissions issue on the server after the update. However still can’t see settings. Do we have to wait for an update?

The only way I have been able to get PMS running again is doing a factory reset on my Nvidia Shield. PMS is able to run and see USB storage and play everything thing fine. I was feeling lucky so I did the update again and bang PMS instantly stopped working. Changes to permissions / reboots have not helped. I am hoping someone at Plex or Nvidia is working on a fix?
