Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

Plex got to have a look at there association with Nvidia Shield cause it’s leaving a bad experience with Plex as a product to new and old users trying Plex

I have nvidia shield tv pro 2019 HotFix #3, Plex server 5410, NAS Qnap T-230. Everything works though with small bugs. I use PMS only for streaming my films collection to TV. If you need I can give some small simple tips how to make right setup of pms. But any way PMS must be finalized by the Plex team.

I was reading a while back in this or perhaps other topic…hardware accelleration was not working anymore with Android 11.

Does someone know if this has been fixed already or is it yet another problem on top of the many current problems we still are having together?

p.s. I would like to test myself but does someone know how one can test or check at their own plex server if hardware accelleration works on the ShieldTV ?

Just to provide an update. Hotfix #3 includes the fixes related to permissions so PMS should be able to run/install without issues. NVidia is working to get a certified version of the firmware out based on hotfix #3. Hopefully that will be soon.

We are still investigating 2 other issues.
1 - PMS being unresponsive due to usb drive with Plex data folder being inaccessible
2 - hw transcoding not working, software transcoding works but you may see buffering with high bitrate files and hevc.

also plex server does not start if shield uses wifi 5g

That sounds likes a Shield issue. PMS shouldn’t care what type of connection it’s on. Although, I would advise against using the Shield as a server (or any type of server software) if you are on WiFi.

I will see if I can reproduce.

That’s a good step! My plex server is on an external drive though so hoping the bug about usb drives not working will be fixed

if shield with wifi 5g then other app as vlc works also plex client works but plex server dead

Thank you for the update. Does the “PMS being unresponsive…” issue include PMS going offline during scanning?

Yes that is one of the symptoms.

Actually, @EM3R50N, not sure about that claim. I found the following on the nVidia site (this was posted earlier in Jan):
QUOTE:
Shield@NVIDIA

There are a lot of questions about how SHIELD Experience could be launched with Plex Media server not working correctly. The root of the issue with Plex Media Server on launch day of 9.0 is related to the changes in Android 11 for Storage. We worked closely with Plex during SHIELD Experience 9.0 development to make sure PMS was working and during all of our internal and external beta testing it was working. Plex wasn’t 100% ready for Android 11’s changes but we had it working. Unfortunately though on January 4th a new version of PMS was launched which changed the reported API level and that broke PMS on SHIELD Experience 9. All of our testing had been complete and the change went unnoticed until launch day.

We are working closely with Plex now to get a new PMS that has full Android 11 storage support and cleans up this experience. In the meantime, one can generally still get PMS working by using a combination of the HotFix image and the 1.24 version of PMS and enabling all of the storage privileges per the first item in the Known issues list.

You can grab a PMS apk from Plex here until it gets released into the store: Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared - #290 by sleevelessjoejohnson_gmail_com

In any case, rather than point fingers, I think we all agree that the main thing is for the issues hopefully to be resolved soon.

I am, luckily, not impacted (did NOT upgrade to Shield Experience 9.0 / Android 11, nor PMS 1.24 yet of that matter - a family member warned me). That being said, I would still like to get the latest software (given other fixes / functional improvements) once the issues are all sorted out.

Fingers crossed for an official fully fixed build of PMS, including storage issues, stability and HW transcoding, all of which work with the prior Shield Experience and older PMS.

Speaking of which, for those who did NOT upgrade to Shield Experience 9.0 (i.e. new Android 11), do PMS 1.24 and / or 1.25 work fine with the old Shield Experience? Mine is on 1.23.x.x

I’m running Version 1.25.3.5385 and didn’t upgrade the Shield after seeing this thread and I’ve had no problems whatsoever.

Hi all just emailed jensen@nvidia.com CEO Nvidia for a update on when a permanent fix will be avaliable. I’m sure he will be straight on it in the morning

Im not an expert…but how does Nvidia test a version of PMS using older api on Android 11 and then say it works fine. And once Plex updates its PMS using Android 11 api everyting breaks?

I have been following the thread daily, hoping for some updates.

Like many others out there here’s my setup and current issues:

My setup: TV Shield Pro 2019, with USB SSD 1gb connected to shield and set for adapted storage (internal-user), Media files are located: 2nd usb 5tb HDD connected to shield, and 2 more 5tb usb HDD connected to XR500 Nighthawk Router (mounted to shield as storage)
I used to have a Sandisk USB 256gb SSD drive connected to the shield, but after going through two of them already (they seem to fail after 6m-1y), after the first factory reset, I used a 1gb usb SSD instead. Weird thing is even though it is recommended by nvidia, any usb drive I insert, seems to always have a warning that I am using a “slow” storage drive.
PMS data is on USB SSD adopted storage.

— I was hearing that my Plex server wasn’t working for users outside of my home network. I tossed it up, to maybe the cause being an update needed, but I couldn’t reproduce the issue myself.

— I shortly after, starting having TV shows randomly buffer sometimes in the middle of a movie, but mostly it was the last 5-10 minutes of a TV show for some reason. (Roku TV in home network)

— I updated my Nvidia Shield TV Pro to Android 11, (which I will never again do, without prior Research!)

— Like many of others out there, this is where Sh** went South… Plex server never came back up after this update. Even though, I properly setup all permissions energy savings settings, all storage for PMS data already moved and migrated to USB adopted storage, prior to even loading any of my libraries into the New Plex Server.

— Performed 1st factory reset of shield TV Pro. (Things worked for a little bit, but some of my libraries weren’t being found (home videos & music), even though when I scanned them, I could actually see the movies and music getting scanned in the status when logged in via local web)

— Now I have realized that no videos are playing on any of my TV’s in my home network.

— Somehow, I am able to still play movies from the Shield device itself (When its not crashing or freezing of course!)

— At this point I found this forum, and followed along and requested update from Nvidia #1

— after this did not fix anything (except for the usb external being an option to save Plex media server data too…(which I don’t use)

— Installed PMS hotfix sideloaded, and still this did not fix anything.

— Keep in mind everything that I am doing, I am going into settings, making sure permissions are setup correctly and also making sure that the PMS server energy savings is not turned on.

— Installed update #2 from nvidia. Still did not fix anything. Still not able to play any movies on any of my devices, except for the shield itself.

— Installed update #3 from Nvidia. At this point I am accustomed to checking all permissions and energy savings option first thing. This is when I noticed my permissions were still the same as before (set to allowed always, for both Plex and PMS), but the energy savings setting is turning on for the PMS app now! By default!, I even notice when I restart the shield this happens everytime! The setting returns to on (which it definitely should be off!) each time the shield restarts. Also each time the shield restarts the the PMS going down and I actually have found a fix for this, I’ll notate below.

— When the PMS goes down (after most restarts), I have to turn off the energy savings setting, and then move the PMS internal data to the internal drive and then back to the USB SSD (internal), and then force close plex app and then open again, and boom, plex is back up again. Now keep in mind it is only working on my shield device. No movies are playable outside of the shield still. I am assuming this is due to the Hardware / Transcoding bug (which seemed to get worse after Android update)

— Odd thing I notice is all movies and TV when paying on shield device show a video bitrate of 0. This is when I click on file info on a movie. But it will still allow me to play it… not sure what is going on here with this, and couldn’t find anyone else with this issue…

— I decided to test everything deeper, by creating another Plex server the same way it was setup on the shield, but on my windows computer instead… I created the same libraries as before.

— Crazy thing is… EVERYTHING WORKS, Including Transcoding!! Which means this is clearly a Nvidia Shield and Plex PMS on Shield issue.

— Until a fix is in place (and verified!), I won’t be updating anything else on my Shield.

Hi all,

I also have this issue on my Nvidia shield, where the settings for Media server are blank.

My media server version is 1.25.3.5448 and android did upgrade to version 11.

Thanks a lot nickking!
So you manually upgraded to PMS 1.25.x.xxxx I guess (mine is not auto updating).

Quick question - Are you using an external HDD (I assume so, but checking to be 100% sure) and, if so, is it formatted as NTFS or?
Just trying to confirm we have the same setup…

Hofix #3 and PMS ending in 5410. The server can’t see the USB storage therefore can’t move the PMS to external storage. While I was under HitFix 2 and same server, I actually could see USB but it would turn off randomly and not restart …

v1.25 didn’t even try to HW transcode my h.265 content when attempting to remote play content. I downgraded to v1.24 but just now noticed that although it tries to HW transcode, it just endlessly buffers for most content. On v1.23, I had no issues transcoding, so that’s the version I’d recommend until some of these issues are sorted out.

I suggest you do not upgrade to 1.25 if you need transcoding, hw transcoding is broken in every 1.25 release so far.

After a few weeks of nightmare I downgraded both shield fw and plex version.

I’m running 1.24 plex on 8.23 fw and everything works like a charm, server has been up for days and everything that matters works perfectly.
