Hoping you’ll look for the different scenarios regarding server going unresponsive.
Different data location (internal, USB, SD card) and type of formating (adoptive, removable, exfat, ntsf, etc )
On my side it really seem like preventing any sleep to the shield prevents most of unresponsiveness.
I’m using data on removable SD card
All up ok this morning. Really seems like preventing any sleep of the shield helps
Hello everyone, so my PMS is working alright now for a few weeks, but I’ve noticed that my DLNA isn’t working anymore, it used to be working before all of these issues and switching the option on and off in the app.plex.tv preferences hasn’t done anything, any ideas?
Be careful here. 1.25.3.5385 was available BEFORE the update to Android 11. Every version after this one was published AFTER the update to Android 11.
So, if you are still on Android 9 (like me), you should be fine upgrading to 1.25.3.5385 (that’s what I’m on). The current issue with this version appears to be that hardware transcoding is broken. This is minimal impact to me as the vast majority of my use does not transcode.
I have not updated past this version (there is a newer version in the Beta channel), but don’t want to upgrade for the same reasons you are asking - don’t know the compatibility of these newer version with “old” Android 9.
I’m stuck in the same frustrating boat and have been for weeks. My USB-attached external HDD is accessible over the network with read and write access. Plex won’t see my library and there are no options listed under the Plex Media Server heading in the settings.
Thanks for the feedback!
Side note - Speaking of HW transcoding, I am by no means an expert in all the nuances of Plex transcoding, especially when it comes to 4K / 4K HDR video nor audio (e.g. DTS HD MA), but speaking of HW transcoding / playback issues:
I have done some experimenting / trial and error to see what to do when a given 4K / 4K HDR video / certain surround sound format playback prevents the video from playing back (at least on the Roku Ultra [latest edition]).
One of the following settings tweaks always resolves it:
-
I change the client settings to ‘Original’ for video playback quality, even if that is HIGHER than the selected setting on that Plex client.
This often solves it. -
Alternately, I change the ‘Direct Play’ to ‘Force’ (instead of Auto) for the problematic video file.
Note - I have HW transcoding turned on.
Anyway, I will post the above separately in a different thread, along with ALL my settings to see if any settings (or more importantly ‘combination of Plex settings’ is not optimal).
Back to the original topic, since I use HW transcoding, I will hold off on updating PMS beyond 1.23.x.xxxx
Just throwing this out there. Some of the terminology I use may not be 100% accurate, but I will do the best to explain my situation. I am currently running hot fix #3, and apk 5448. Under hot fix #2 and 5110, initially the PMS was sort of working. I could see the external drive, I just could not make the PMS complete the switch from internal to external. However, after linking all of my folders to the correct location (via the plex web app), all of my content was showing and the few items I tried playing worked…until it didn’t.
- I ran into the issue where there was no option on the PMS to turn on/off the server (someone previously posted a pick of what it looks like), so I was essentially dead in the water.
- Then I installed hot fix #3 and per the suggestion from a plex employee post installed the 5448 apk. After this I was able to get the PMS to successfully switch from internal to external, but using the web app to get my programs loaded took a while.
- I have had numerous instances where the web app states that the server is disconnected but when I go to the shield I can verify it is in fact running.
- Also I am having difficulty upgrading my libraries (TV Shows and Movies). TV shows updated (not all album art shows up though) and movies still has not been able to upgrade.
-
- A new problem that I have had over the past few days (which I have never had before) is that I cannot open the storage device from my computer (the location where I can manage my libraries). When I type the location in my search, the folder shows up like it always has, but then when I click to open the folder it does nothing. I wanted to mention this, because I have not seen a post commenting on this issue (though it may be in the thread).
So basically, right now I am sort of up and working to an extent. I may have to reboot the shield to get plex working as it sometimes does not have the server running and/or the screen locks up and is unresponsive (I imagine that is a shield problem). When I do get it restarted I am successful at seeing my content (though much of the album artwork is missing) and everything that I have tried watching, plays. However, it obviously still is not working completely the way it should and I have no ability to add (or remove for that matter) any content as I cannot get the storage device folder to open from my computer…I think this may be referred to as the smb, not sure.
Once Hot Fix #3 made it to me, I seem to be in business. Hopefully things keep going!
My plex seems to have just disappeared also ! wth?
I have a USB 3.0 (approved) pen drive setup as internal storage and that is where I store my Plex database and I have a USB 3.0 External HDD (WD 12TB) which is formatted as NTFS.
I’ve not had any issues since I had to setup my Plex from scratch several months ago due to a corrupt database. I’m not seeing any transcoding issues like some are reporting.
Hotfix 3 is working for me!
I had applied all the prior hotfixes and the Plex apk. I even recreated my libraries and it would get stuck, freeze, and basically never work. Missing server, etc. same as everyone. Spent many hours!
I can conclusively say that for me, the latest hotfix 3 has fixed the issues. I run an external USB WD passport 4tb that has all the server info on it.
I will add that I had to logout of Plex on the Shield, and then back in before it would work. Otherwise it looked like it did when it was broken. I think I cleared cache and data too. All I know is that it has worked since the weekend.
Cleared data implies that you had to reset all your Plex meta data … did you start everything over? Are you talking about the client app or the media server app?
Thanks nickking!
I am using Internal storage for the Plex data storage and an NTFS HDD for the media (video and audio files).
I think for now, I may play it safe since Plex is working well (with prior Shield Experience and PMS 1.23.x.x) and I do not feel like I am missing anything urgent in the new PMS or new Shield Experience (although I am eager to try the new versions out, ONCE the storage and HW transcoding issues are fixed, to see if the reported benefits work).
Now IF I had a second Shield TV Pro to play with (with nothing set up yet), then I would perhaps experiment on that one, assuming I could roll back to the old Shield Exp. and PMS).
Hi,
I am using Shield Pro 2019 with Plex and setup the external storage option in Plex so my libraries and databases are stored on my external USB drive.
Also installed latest Hotfix #3 with PMS v.125.3.5448
I have formatted my older 750GB exteral USB drive with FAT32 and copied my backup Libraries (whole /Plex Media Server/ folder) to the /Android/data/com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb/ using my MacBook Pro and connected the USB disk back to my Shield Pro 2019 and started PMS again.
This seems to work now for more then a day (>24hours).
Tried it before with NTFS and exFAT but that freezes my Shield after an hour or so.
Only thing not working for me now is that i cannot see any folders in the /Android/data/ location when i connect over the network with SMB from my LAN. I use this transfer over local network option with a backup script which runs every night to backup my Plex Media Folder with all the libraries and databases.
The Nvidia forums mentioned the NTFS/exFAT issue as an open issue and they are working on it.
But from what i understand the Network share issue (SMB) with accessing the /Android/data/com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb/ folder is not mentioned to be fixed.
I can only see specific Kodi SMB access being fixed:
"Restores ability for SMB server to navigate Kodi media files "
Wondering anyone else is having same issue?
thx @Jimmy_Hendrixx - so long story short - no fix for external drives formatted as NTFS or exFAT yet but finally an explanation by Nvidia what went so wrong.
"The root of the issue with Plex Media Server on launch day of 9.0 is related to the changes in Android 11 for Storage. We worked closely with Plex during SHIELD Experience 9.0 development to make sure PMS was working and during all of our internal and external beta testing it was working. Plex wasn’t 100% ready for Android 11’s changes but we had it working.
Unfortunately though on January 4th a new version of PMS was launched which changed the reported API level and that broke PMS on SHIELD Experience 9. All of our testing had been complete and the change went unnoticed until launch day.
We are working closely with Plex now to get a new PMS that has full Android 11 storage support and cleans up this experience. In the meantime, one can generally still get PMS working by using a combination of the HotFix image and the 1.24 version of PMS and enabling all of the storage privleges per the first item in the Known issues list."
This explanation has been out there for a while and the issues have grown. With hotfix 3, the plex server will eventually die, it’s just a matter of time. SMB will crawl, even if your shield is wired. Not sure how remote streams will work with the networking crawling, I haven’t tried.
Shield went from tops to turd.
This is sad. For the past week I can be using my Shield…doing anything and it will just freeze and none of the apps will work.
Plex is the worst it has ever been. I’m utterly disappointed at all of this.
I’m on the latest so called hotfix and latest recommend pms.apk
One very important lesson I have learned is DO NOT USE YOUR SHIELD AS A PLEX SERVER.
Which leaves the Shield as a $200 plastic paperweight for those who purchased it purely for the PMS capabilities & makes the Plex pass we all paid for totally redundant no?
What a con
Perhaps it’s time that Plex looked into refunding monies they’ve earned from Plex Pass subscribers over the last month & keeping the ‘service’ free until such a time they can get their act together & offer a product that works?
I find the lack of comments & updates from anyone at this sham of a company extremely disappointing.
Is it going to be fixed?
Can it even be fixed?
What are we paying you for?
What are you doing each day to fix it?
Do you even know what’s wrong with it?
Laughable.
